F1 on the BBC

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/moto...ne/7306123.stm
Sorry didn't know where to post but here goes.... Looks like the BBC have won the rights to show F1 from 2009 on the BBC hopefully in HD

Re: F1 on the BBC

I doubt it will be HD as they have stringent hours i.e between 3pm and 1am and unfortunately I can't think of one race that occurs with these hours.

Re: F1 on the BBC

Hooray!
Lets hope its in HD!

No more adverts which mean we get to see the whole race!

Sod's law says something interesting always happens when ITV are showing adverts. Even though we are still at the mercy of the race director, we should miss crucial points less often with the BBC!

Plenty of time to work out the details for live HD in 2009.

It would require the nod from the trustees.

Fan tastic

I bet it will be in HD, makes that extra £10 a month worth while.

Theres no way we will see F1 on ITV in HD this season now, they will be spitting the dummy out because they have lost one of their best contracts.

Good old Bernie

Re: F1 on the BBC

Umm - On the whole this is ok news which could be great news if coverage was to be shown in HD. I'm a huge F1 fan and I have to say that ITV's coverage grew on me. They've supported 99% of live coverage ( race and qualy) and shifted primetime soaps when required ( Brazil etc ) to cater for the F1 schedule. I also liked to tech aspect / behind the scenes look that they promoted
BBC, please take MB and J Allen with you......

Sorry, are you Clinically insane? Take James Allen ??!!! Dear lord, his commentary is ill-informed, often in need of correction by Brundle and worst of all he is massively unbiased. I actually think he alone is the worst aspect of ITV's coverage, and plenty of F1 fans would agree with me. BBC will hopefully be like their football coverage and a little less biased (e.g. Champions league they brown nose Man Utd and Liverpool, even my g/f who is a united season ticket holder thinks their coverage stinks! Sky win hands down on that front). I had a real whinge at a couple of ITV guys I met last year for going completely OTT about Lewis, I don't want to see his bloody dad every fortnight when there are 21 other drivers who barely get a look in. Fact of the matter is Lewis is good yes, but he's strolled into a team with the fastest motor on the grid, something the likes of Heidfeld, Webber, Rosberg etc would give their right arm for. If anything last seasons best driver was a toss up between Rosberg and Button ! ITV are ratings chasing, and that means playing on the Brits all the time. Moto GP coverage on the BBC is far far superior to ITV's F1 coverage.

HD F1 would be great, however the big thing for me is not having advert breaks in the race. Thank god for that !

I think the main reason for a shift to BBC would be ITV lack off progress on the HD front

Re: F1 on the BBC

The BBC paid more, sorry but Bernie and his partners have little interest beyond the cash value. It's also being reported by ITV themselves that they didn't pursue F1 so they could budget for the final CL package which they just won.

ITV decided not to finish the five year contract stating 'commercial reasons'. Bernie went to the BBC and asked them to take over the coverage.

BBC are paying £40m per year.

The answer from the man himself. ITV spent its money elsewhere.

Re: F1 on the BBC

Formula One is to return to BBC TV after 13 years following ITV's decision to pull out of its deal to air the championship at the end of this season.

A new five-year exclusive deal understood to be worth around £200m across TV, radio, broadband and mobile has been signed between the BBC and Formula One Administration Ltd.

It will run from 2009 to 2013, inclusive, replacing ITV's existing deal, which was due to run until 2010.

The BBC director of sports rights, Dominic Coles, said: "The biggest motorsporting event in the world is returning home after 12 years.

"We were delighted when Bernie Ecclestone approached us about the return of F1 to the BBC.

"F1 is a crown jewel of sports broadcasting, so to bring the rights back to their traditional home from 2009 is tremendously exciting."

An ITV spokesman said: "ITV plc today confirmed that it has decided to exit Formula One at the end of this season.

"This was a straightforward commercial decision for ITV and we're pleased in that Formula One will continue to broadcast free-to-air."

So who terminated ITV's contract? ITV or Bernie? If Bernie did, I assume ITV are going to want some big compensation for breach of contract?

Re: F1 on the BBC

It was ITV who wanted to end a year early, and to use some of the money saved to guarantee some live Champions League football and other prime time sport. You can understand their point of view since many of the races are not at prime time and that Bernie was after a full range of coverage leading up to the big race day.
Great to see the BBC have F1 back , and they still have money saved from their previous FA contract(now gone to ITV and Setanta) to try and get the Rugby World Cup and or even some Test Cricket. Also Frank Warren is said to be keen to get live boxing back on the Beeb, as ITV"s interest is said to be waning on that front.

We've only got to hope the ever growing anti-sport brigade don't start moaning, or the BBC will end up putting the prime time races on 'red button' with diabolical PQ, like they did with the World Athletics Championships a couple of weeks ago.

Re: F1 on the BBC

So Bernie went to the BBC cap in hand and that's the best deal they could get given Ch4 and Five could not compete and SKY/Setanta were not even in the picture.

Well if I was the only game in town I am sure £40mill a year is a bit extreme after all when the MP's came on the radio bitching about the cost I dismissed them as the usual anti-car and anti-bbc elements but now they seem to have a very good point.
I suppose the only justification is that the FOM could enforce the ITV contract if so desired (regardless of the results) which gave them a fall back position but perhaps buying out ITV to the end of the contract and the renegotiate with far more favourable terms would have been more sense?

Re: F1 on the BBC

i do think hd may be a little time yet im a track marshal at silverstone i have noticed when being stationed at the camera point even though itv cover the race the cameras are bbc cameras and the pictures are sold to itv the cameras have been used for years at silverstone and cheaper for itv to use bbc cams. and the cost to replace every camera around the circuit is very high i presume and every circuit around the world will need to be replaced i could be wrong on this im no expert in hd cams... it will be out of the bbc hands in other countrys as they use there own equipment as in the footy on itv when games are played abroad they are never in hd apart from italy now that have hd as u would have noticed when liverpool played inter at milan... sky has sent hd cams abroad but i cant see bbc doing it to every circuit

Something changed las year becasue it was only last year that the transmision finally went 16:9.

This could have been becasue they changed to HD cameras, which are of course only 16:9.

Re: F1 on the BBC

Looking forward to no ad breaks.

Just hope they show the re-runs earlier than ITV are doing this year. 3pm is way too late for those of us that like to try to avoid the results and don't have the stamina or willpower to stay up to watch them live.

Not even watched the first two races of this season seeing as the full re-run is so late in the afternoon, by which time I've stumbled across the result, which seriously dents my enthusiasm.

Only ITV guy I'll miss is Martin Brundle if they don't bring any of them over to the beeb. I like the insight he provides from having been a F1 driver, and he seems to know his stuff and not make glaring mistakes commentating.

Lets hope this is rumor!

Hamster to front BBC F1 coverage?

I can imagine the Top Gear people doing maybe a feature for the race buildup (like news from the week/practice, technical updates and the onboard lap video) but I dont think they should front the entire coverage. Hammond is definitely the most suitable out of the them to play a bigger role though if they decide to go for presenters. Clarkson wouldn't take it seriously and would mock everything whereas James May is more of a classic car person than an F1 person. Hammond's had his big crash and also drove an F1 car in that feature last year.

Sorry, no. F1 started before the BBC knew their HD channel would have a future... or some other lame excuse.

That's what a recorder (VHS, DVDr or DVR) is for

Wake up when I want and watch the race before watching or listening to any news reports or having the one guy who knows you are a fan and feels it's his duty to tell you the result

Re: F1 on the BBC

Hi all

I remember reading about F1 managements decision to go 16:9, Bernie was being interviewed and specifically stressed that HD is not as "in demand" enough for the investment in technology.

Thats not great when you think of the money that F1 makes, just like ITV the BBC will ride off the same F1 broadcasting service and if they dont provide a HD stream then BBC HD or indeed any channel cant show HD.

.........and also what a show it would be in High Def with its glitzy, sunny, colourful locations and blazing 5.1 audio.
