F1 In HD

Is anybody aware whether ITV will be broadcasting this years F1 coverage in HD?
With the launch of ITV HD around the same time as Freesat it would be a marvelous vehicle(forgive the pun) for the new service.

Mods feel free to move this query if I have put it in the wrong thread.
Dave.

Re: F1 In HD

Almost all the current F1 feeds are HD. Bernie's 1080 trucks are at almost every race. Whether ITV will buy the HD feed is anybody's guess. I really hope they do, the SD ITV picture is pants on Sky and Freeview.

Cheers,
Stephen

Re: F1 In HD

i watched a sample of last years race in Japan in HD

wow!! looked amazing!

but as mentioned before - given that itv's SD picture is soo bad the chances of HD... nah..

would have been great if the Sky F1 channel was still around - that would have been HD for sure!!

Even if ITV do not buy the HD feed it would still look pretty good on their Hd channel launching in the spring, it would be upscaled though.

So do you reckon ITV will simulcast their SD channel? As you say an upscaled version of F1 should look good, sun, exotic locations, imagine monaco in HD, and the night race would be a definate help in HD.

Hope so

I watch ER on Ch4HD and that is upscaled SD and looks pretty good to my eyes.

I remember the HD demo in Comet a couple of years ago showing benetton in the pits in HD, it looked amazing

I emailed ITV today via their F1 website regarding the prospect of F1 being covered in HD, their response was,
" we have no knowledge of any HD broadcasting yet, so cannot help any further, ITV duty office."
bodes well....!

I believe all races were shown widescreen, whether any were 'stretched' to fit not too sure, all graphics were 4:3 safe though.

Re: F1 In HD

Yes all races where 16.9 last year.

The last interview I saw with Bernie talking about HD was He was very egar for the world to see F1 in HD.
If it is being broadcast in HD allready then it would be stupied for ITV not to put it on their new HD channel

As far as I am aware, Bernievision go to almost very race with their 1080 trucks and film in HD, although there are some where the local companies film instead. The British Grand Prix last year was definitely filmed in HD, as you could go and see it at the cinema for about £15 or so. Bernie's feed will then get passed to ITV, who downscale and mangle it for transmission in as low a bit rate as they feel they can get away with.

Cheers,
Stephen

Yes but the "soon to be" joy of Freesat is that after the purchase cost you would not need to pay Mr Murdoch to watch HD via the BBC, ITV possibly ch4 and 5 at launch as well.
Come on ITV give us a hint of what is to come, at least with the BBC we have a pretty good idea of how the HD channel will grow.

Are they ever likely to integrate it into Freeview? I know it'll need a new box, but easier than buying a satellite dish and getting it all set up and everything...

Interesting stuff (I've just googled it) with a bit of luck it'll get Sky to drop the charge from HD. If I go HD I'll want the footy to be in HD too really which means SkyHD. If it wasn't for that I'd be all ready to ditch Sky.

Re: F1 In HD

I eagerly await the time when F1 is shown in HD. Having watched the Nascar Daytona 500 on Sky Sports in HD, the clarity of the picture was staggering, particularly the in-car footage and only helps to cause me to get frustrated that at present, F1 is not shown in HD.

I agree that ITV should hurry up with their HD plans, but the quality of the picture in some of their football coverage in SD is downright appalling at times; if they cant get it sorted in SD, then I dont hold out much hope for their HD coverage.

Slightly off topic, but sort of relevant....those of you that remember and had Sky back in, I think 2002 - when they introduced PPV F1 Digital using the main F1 feed - showed even back then, how much potential F1 coverage had and still has, especially interactively. At the time, I preferred watching it on Sky with Ben Edwards on commentary !!

Obviously, having to pay per race was not attractive and the yearly season ticket was also quite expensive, so this wasn't really viable. But I also remember that ITV showed some of the F1 Digital coverage during the US grand prix of that year across all digital platforms (e.g. team radios, lap times, additional cameras). This sort of format in HD would be, in my opinion, sublime.

If only Bernie gave Channel 4 the F1 rights to show on channel 140...or gave it back to the BBC without the interruptions of the ads.

F1 in HD would be glorious but how about SKY producing the A1 final round in HD from Brands (April), they have the access to the OB units and experience in circuit coverage.

Lets be honest, we want everything in HD

I got a couple of F1 Promo's in HD and it does look good. Excuse the artifacts, it will only do a capture during playback for some reason.

Were these taken from the promo reel comet had playing a couple of years ago?

As someone else said further back in this thread that did look stunning, having not got access to sky HD I wondered how the two compare as the comet demo was running off a PC at the time.

Apparently, SpeedTV will be broadcasting this season's races in HD in America. Wonder if it's a HD feed or just upscaled like the one that was in cinemas.
