I eagerly await the time when F1 is shown in HD. Having watched the Nascar Daytona 500 on Sky Sports in HD, the clarity of the picture was staggering, particularly the in-car footage and only helps to cause me to get frustrated that at present, F1 is not shown in HD.
I agree that ITV should hurry up with their HD plans, but the quality of the picture in some of their football coverage in SD is downright appalling at times; if they cant get it sorted in SD, then I dont hold out much hope for their HD coverage.
Slightly off topic, but sort of relevant....those of you that remember and had Sky back in, I think 2002 - when they introduced PPV F1 Digital using the main F1 feed - showed even back then, how much potential F1 coverage had and still has, especially interactively. At the time, I preferred watching it on Sky with Ben Edwards on commentary !!
Obviously, having to pay per race was not attractive and the yearly season ticket was also quite expensive, so this wasn't really viable. But I also remember that ITV showed some of the F1 Digital coverage during the US grand prix of that year across all digital platforms (e.g. team radios, lap times, additional cameras). This sort of format in HD would be, in my opinion, sublime.
If only Bernie gave Channel 4 the F1 rights to show on channel 140...or gave it back to the BBC without the interruptions of the ads.
