hi i have it on bluray but have not finished it yet so cant tell about coral but i can tell you it looks very good indeed even tho its only shown in 1080i .

Yes, "shallow seas" contains corals and other marine life. "Deep seas" also shows marine life. The is also a bit in from pole to pole... Apart from that there is a sweet water episode and a blind fish in the caves episode.

The uk ones are 1080i the usa versions are 1080p. I have a planet earth boxset uk on hddvd left over now my player has gone back.

A better question would be why is the US version 1080p?

The program was made at 1080i (as indeed is all of the BBCs HD programming), so why make it progressive on the disc?

Then again, I've also heard that it only says 1080i on the box because one of the discs is interlaced and the rest are progressive, though until I've heard this confirmed, I'm more inclined to believe that there's a progressive transfer for the US market because of the supposedly must have aspect of 1080p.

As someone pointed out in another thread, 1080i60 contains more information than 1080p24.

I set the res on my ep30 to 1080p and the judder on my lx508 was awful!!

changing it to 1080i solved these problems, so I can't believe that any of it is in 1080p.

Yes that is what I would have guessed as well originally. But BBC HD broadcasts 1080i50 and when the HD DVD was published the Toshiba players could not handle that format yet. Besides to my knowledge not current title is using that format yet. So if it is 1080i then it is 1080i60 which is not the same as the BBC broadcast format. In either case it may still contain film-based content, which is likely the case since apparently most of the material was shot progressive at 25fps.

The US version is probably 1080p24 since it is easy to convert to that format by slowing down 1080p25 to 1080p24.

Therefore I am inclined to think it is likely that both versions are the same except for the the fifth 1080i disk of the UK version.

If you tried 1080p60 then (3:2) judder is to be expected only if it is a 1080p24 recording. If it were a true 1080i60 recording then that should look smooth without judder!

I play it at 1080i as well. Have you played e.g. disc 1 together with Purecinema Advance and Drive mode 3? When I then switch purecinema to off (video mode) or purecinema standard (60Hz 3:2 pulldown), I notice some 3:2 judder. With Purecinema Advance it is buttery smooth. Do you have the same? What happens if you then switch your EP30 to 1080p24? It should remain smooth.

I agree there is some inevitable judder present in some scenes as part of the recording itself which I suspect is due to strobing due to unobserved maximum panning speeds.

Im sure I heard somewhere that when testing BBC HD they tried both 1080i and 1080p but 1080i was the standard they decided to go with. This maybe dues to techical reasons i.e. bandwidth but I dont really know.

1080i looked best oin my 508, but not enough of it was 'wow factor', the underwater stuff was good, but too much of it looked sd to me.

I don't agree with Ozzzy in this respect. I think the HD material on the HD versions is really spectacularly beautiful and incomparable to DVD. A couple of bits were originally filmed in SD, but Planet Earth is almost entirely HD material.

In short, I only get a smooth picture if I set it to 1080i/pure cinema advance/drive mode 3!
I tried all the variations I could think of with regards to 1080p and 1080p/24, and they all produce terrible judder!
Maybe I'll give it another go with the other discs, but it just takes too god damn long resetting the res and loading the disc again............

Having had hddvd, i now realise that you really need 1080p to get the best out of it. I never watched all of it, but what i did watch wasn't all that good to be fair. What was good was stunning, just not enough of it IMO.

ALL versions of Planet Earth, on both HD DVD and Blu Ray, are 1080P. IT DOES NOT MATTER WHERE YOU BOUGHT IT OR WHAT IT SAYS ON THE BOX, THE MAIN PROGRAMMES ARE ALL IN 1080P, WITHOUT EXCEPTION.

The video files are exactly the same size on both versions (US/UK); just try both versions in your player, you will not see a difference.

The UK version mentions 1080i on the box because the 'extra' programmes are in 1080i, but this is at 30fps so the motion looks much better than the main programmes anyway. The 1080i on the box is merely the BBC trying to cover themselves against accusations of false advertising.

Whats worse than people on forums talking nonsense is that if you look at Amazon or Play..com there are people posting 'reviews' which are saying it is 1080i and that they are disgusted with the BBC etc and telling people to buy the US version. There people should ask themselves WHY the BBC would release a lower quality product in the UK - this would cost MORE money, and they would gain nothing in return. The answer is THEY HAVEN'T. It's all 1080p. Use yer loaf!

So please lets stop this nonsense, any lack of image quality in Planet Earth is due to the original recording technology used (24p film / early HD cameras) and not the release format.

If you want the best demo 'nature' disc then just get BBC's Galapagos, it's not as interesting but you'll have no complaints about PQ. (and YES it's 1080p, AND 30fps.

The judder is caused by 3:2 pulldown, it has nothing to do with the 24p mode, thats just to ensure it plays only 24fps, and it is a complete gimmick/marketing ploy. Unless your TV refreshes at a multiple of 24hz (and I can't think of any available in the UK that do, apart from projectors), you will ALWAYS get judder. The Beeb really should have filmed it at 30fps...

you're talking up a good one like its gospel ... but I believe these guys are talking about judder on a Pioneer 508xd... a plasma TV that isn't a projector, is widely available on the UK and does refresh at a multiple of 24hz... along with the rest of the current Pioneer range and quite a few UK LCDs.

I do agree with you that misinformation and people talking nonsense of forums is annoying though.

Ahh..well seems you are right about that Pioneer, I tend to keep my TV browsing to sub-£1200 models...and I haven't looked at anything made by Pioneer since the turn of the century. Maybe I should. 72Hz mode sounds tasty...
