Thunderbirds (the movie) Are Go!

Apparently it has finally been greenlighted...

Working Title are making it with a rumoured budget of £50m

Johnathon Frakes (Star Trek) is to direct it - shooting is expected to begin in March at Pinewood.

Framestore, the FX company behind 'Die Another Day' & 'Walking With Dinosaurs' will create the film's visuals.

Producer Tim Bevan commented on why it took such a long time to get this project going: "We started work five years ago on this but we could never quite get the script right, and in retrospect, thank God we didn't. The special effects and their cost in particular have moved on so much since then - you can see it between the first and second Harry Potter films. Getting the Thunderbirds craft right is as important as getting the casting right. Thunderbirds 1, 2, 3 and 4 are the heroes of the piece in many ways. We have been faithful in the new designs to Gerry Anderson's original concepts in the way that the new Volkswagen Beetle or the new Mini are to their old ones"

Cool

Wasn’t there talk of either reviving Captain Scarlet as a live TV program or making a film of it?

Oh, ****!
I've been waiting for this movie for about 20 years and the signs I'm getting from Fanderson and from the Ain't it Cool News web site fill me with real dread. No big rescues, an upper-crust British baddie (big bloody surprise!). I'm a major (41 year old) fan of most (not all) things Anderson and he has been wanting to do this for a long time. However, he doesn't seem to be lnvolved in this project at all; he must have sold the rights. A twelve year old Alan? How the hell will he pilot TB3? Is this Thunderbirds or Joe 90?
I also heard that Frakes et al had been forced to do a major script rewrite due to the adverse reactions from their audience research. Trust the Yanks to have the last word; Jeez, they just can't admit that there is talent elsewhere in the world. They have to base everything in L.A. and make the hero a Yank and the villain a Brit. God they're insecure. Just ****es me off. Rant rant rant.

I couldn’t agree with you more one of my pet hates too.

Liked Fireball XL5 myself, and preferred it to Thunderbirds although I do enjoy them as well.

To coin a phrase, "It will be a great disaster".

Hope the movie bombs, and all concerned are left with egg on their faces.

Absolute heresy to even attempt a live action picture without the overall control of Mr Anderson and a British production team and director.

Were will it all end? Will Smith playing Brains. May be he could rap his lines............

I bet the casting will be awful. We've already got Will Smith as Brains, what about J-Lo as Lady Penelope, Leonardo DiCraprio as the butler, and Sylvester Stallone as the head of the Scott family.

I would be really disappointed if Kurt Russel were chosen, he is not a great actor imho

Agreed. As Jeff Tracy is the principal figure I think the role needs someone with a little more clout.

Latest Info:

Jeff Tracy: Bill Paxton* (I think Kurt Russell might have been better)

Scott Tracy: Philip Winchester
Virgil Tracy: Dominic Colenso
John Tracy: Lex Shrapnel
Gordon Tracy: Ben Torgenson

* so is Jeff Tracy going to seem as though he's constantly on the verge of a nervous breakdown?

So do I.

He is good at the brainy, bumbling. A bit like Giles in Buffy

I agree, It looks nothing like a 21st century Rolls Royce, more like a stretched version of a 7 series BMW. Sounds about right, seeing as BMW owns Rolls Royce (I think)

Doesn't a character credit mean she invented the original characters???

It doesn't mean she is writing the story or the script.
