Anyone seen Sanctuary?

Amanda (Sam Carter) Tapping and a few others associated with Stargate SG1/Atlantis (Christopher Heyerdahl, Peter Deluise, David Hewlett and Martin Wood as Director) have done a Webisode Sci Fi series called Sanctuary. Episode 5 is out very soon. I think it is very good.

It is in 15-17 minute episodes on Utube. There is also HD 720p versions available.

I have also got the HD versions. It does make it more obvious that they used green screen for most of it especially when watching it on a projector. I used VLC to play the episode in order as a playlist and it made a enjoyable 70 minutes.

Episode 5 was supposed to be out today.

Re: Anyone seen Sanctuary?

A little pricey but without the $2mill an eps subsidy a network or cable/sat shows gets before being sold on the internet the price ain't too bad.
The green screen is a little too obvious but didn't distract too much when viewing on a large screen and the show has potential.

Re: Anyone seen Sanctuary?

Sanctuary to be made into tv series

Quote:
Sci Fi Channel has greenlighted "Sanctuary," the first television series to use live-action actors against virtual sets in the style of the features "300" and "Sin City."

Sci Fi has ordered a full 13-episode season of the new scripted drama series, which originated online as the first high-definition sci-fi Web series.

"Sanctuary" hails from the "Stargate SG-1" trio of star Amanda Tapping, writer-producer Damian Kindler and producer-director Martin Wood, who are executive producing the series with Sam Egan.

Tapping stars as the enigmatic Dr. Helen Magnus who is on a quest with her young protege, Will Zimmerman (Robin Dunne), to track down, aid and protect strange creatures that walk the earth.

Kindler created "Sanctuary," while Wood directed the webisodes starring Tapping.

Because of Sci Fi's ties with Tapping, Kindler and Wood through the "Stargate" franchise, the network's brass had discussed "Sanctuary" with them even before it launched as a Web series. Talks shifted into high gear when the trio came back with a DVD containing two one-hour blocks of webisodes.

"We were blown away by the level of quality they have been able to achieve on a Web budget," Sci Fi exec vp original programming Mark Stern said. "We loved the world they'd created, and we particularly loved their approach, since we had been looking for a way to apply the virtual-set CGI environment from films like '300' and 'Sin City' to a television series."

TV networks have been trying to use CGI-generated environments on TV series, most notably ABC's efforts with "Dinotopia." But "this is the first time the technology is mature enough and inexpensive enough to do it," Stern said.

"Sanctuary," which features 90% CGI sets, will be retooled for its transition to television, including the creation of a new two-hour premiere episode and expanding some characters. Still, a lot of the footage from the Web series will be used, with some enhancement of the visual effects and the CGI background to play better on the TV screen.

Sanctuary

Sanctuary The tv series - cast and creators talk.

Premieres on Sci Fi on October 3rd with a two-hour episode.

Quote:
Tapping plays Magnus with an English accent, and she takes about how this came about and what it reveals about the character. “It’s part of her history,” she says. “Helen Magnus dates back to Victorian era England, and it’s an important part of who she is. It informs a lot about her eccentricities and where she came from. She’s from that era. She’s was one of the first females who was allowed to audit the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons. She’s one of those people who just pushes the envelope and the boundaries of science and technology and thinking and has always done so.”

“So it was important to me as an actor that she stayed true to that part of her lineage, and one of her eccentricities is that she fiercely holds on to the Britishisms that she was born with. So she will only drink tea, and she speaks with the Queen’s English even though I’ve tried to broaden the accent a little bit because she’s lived around the world and is 157 years old.”

Re: Anyone seen Sanctuary?

Excellent. Strange channel to put it on though.

Looks like they are putting the webisodes straight on TV. I actually got the HD versions so ITV4 will be a downgrade compared to that.

not so sure ... no judgement on the show, but I can't really see it being a ratings puller on any of the primary channels, and its probably quite cheap as a slot filler on a secondary channel like ITV4

why not stick it on ITV2 same channel as Supernatural?

I guess they want people to watch ITV4, dont even know why they bother with 3 and 4.

I agree it should be on ITV 2. I don't think ITV 4 is even widescreen on Freeview.

I have just remembered to put in my record list and glad it is an hour long. It will be better than watching it in 10-12 minute chunks.

Re: Anyone seen Sanctuary?

Got this in the planner based on your recommendations chaps.

I like the fact that these shows are on channels like ITV4, makes it feel more exclusive. Like with Supernatural on ITV2 it makes you feel all warm inside having unearthed such a diamond whilst everyone at work struggles along with the cack (in the main) being served on the main terrestrial channels

Exclamation Re: Anyone seen Sanctuary?

Hi,

I'm glad it's on ITV4, (where the show will be shown in proper Widescreen), and not on ITV2, (where it would be covered in extra DOG's)!

Should be an interesting show. Let's hope that the USA show it over 13 consecutive weeks, and don't start having month-long breaks for every single sporting event under the sun (which is what is likely to happen to Heroes Season 3, on the BBC! ).

Re: Anyone seen Sanctuary?

Is ITV widescreen on Freeview? I don't watch it often but it has always been 4:3 for me.

I feel some people may be disappointed with it if they are still using green screen in most of the shots. Hopefully a bigger budget will make the cgi more realistic.

I got more enjoyment in watchomg the webisodes doing spot the stargate actor/film crew as SG1 had been canceled and it I was pleased to still see Amanda Tapping and the rest of them.

Re: Anyone seen Sanctuary?

Good first episode. It was interesting seeing the same scenes from the webisodes filmed from a different angle. The new scenes that are not in the webisodes were nice to see.

I was on the IMDB and noticed several from Battlestar Galatica as well as the expected Stargate SG1/Atlantis people.

Re: Anyone seen Sanctuary?

The accent takes a little getting used too, but is a Essex girl originally

It was well executed, could off come over much worse, the main guy comes over as a Daniel Jackson mould. Seems a cross of different series. Hellboy not quite, but if they are bagging monsters each week should be a ride, just needs to pick up the pace. 7/10

Did you watch any of the webisodes? Her accent gets explained but they haven't shown any of the scenes yet. The first webisode starts of differently with one of these scene before we see the police car stop.

No mate i did not. So they dont show her in a Essex nightclub in Romford then, before she gets transported to the Sanctuary She is suppose to be 157yrs old? - is that relevant to the buildup off the plot.

Thumbs down Re: Anyone seen Sanctuary?

HI,

Well I just watched my recording of the first episode, and I thought it was truly awful!

I'm sorry, but the show was one of the worst episodes of a TV show I've ever seen! The acting was woeful, the script rubbish, and the directing very low-rate!

Amanda Tapping was wooden, and yet when in Stargate, she was excellent. Her accent was all over the place, and unbelievable compared to her American "Stargate" accent. And the long, black-haired wig she wore, was hilarious!

As for the special effects, I've seen better stuff done on kids shows, from 10 years ago! This was a pitiful show, and if this show has been given the go-ahead for a Second Season, which I believe it has, then I'm utterly shocked, and have little faith in TV executives any more.

Kandyse McClure was wasted in this, in comparison with her "Battlestar Galactica" character, and the editing by ITV4 for the commercial breaks about right, given the quality of this show.

Sorry, but this was a major disappointment. A measly 3/10 from me, and a shoddy show that will need to really up the ante, if it wants me to remain a fan.

Kind of missing the point. It is not supposed to meet normal TV standards. It is just longer versions of the webisodes which has proven to be popular. The whole thing is done in front of a green screen on a minimum budget.

I agree on the ITV break times.

As I said, the accent thing hasn't been explained yet.
