Anyone watch any anime series?

Hi all,

Ok just wondered if there's any fan of anime on these forums? Ive just finished watching a few episodes of a series called "kenichi" and an episode of "devil may cry" and thought they were both excellent. Im really after some advice on any hardcore fans as to whats considered the best, personal favourites etc. I like a few manga films and am considering getting some of these anime series. I have checked a few sites out but a lot of the forums seem to be overrun by stupid yank brats who aint helpful at all.

So any advice from the relatively normal folk on here would be great!

Re: Anyone watch any anime series?

Ghost In the Shell: Stand Alone Complex Gigs 1 & 2
Cowboy Bebop - both movie and series
Noir
Last Exile
Gunslinger Girl
Gunsmith Cats
Haibane Renmei
Anything by Studio Ghibli
Chobits
Hellsing

That should keep you going. Oh, and make sure you watch them subbed rather than dubbed for a true Anime experience.

Regards

Re: Anyone watch any anime series?

All excellent recommendations. I would like to add :-

Berserk (oldschool but a goodie)
Death Note (brilliant mental storyline)
Darker than Black (new series still ongoing)
Monster (long series 74 episodes but again good storyline)
Ninja Scroll (movie and tv series)
Blood the Last Vampire (movie)

Re: Anyone watch any anime series?

Thanks for all the recommendations so far guys!

I have so far watched 5 episodes of "History's Strongest Disciple Kenichi" and im quite impressed thus far. If this is just a taster as to what to expect then i can see myself "acquiring" a helluva lot more!

Re: Anyone watch any anime series?

I would add:

Paranoia Agent
Requiem From The Darkness
and I'm quite enjoying Tokko too.

Ghost in the Shell S.A.C series 1 & 2 remain my favorites but I absolutely loved the strangeness of Paranoia Agent by Satoshi Kon and his films are well worth checking out too - Perfect Blue, Millenium Actress and Tokyo Godfathers and I'm very much looking forward to his new film Paprika when it comes out - the trailers look amazing.

If you are in the UK and want to pick up some cheap complete series Heat Guy J (6 discs) is available from play.com for £7.99 and if you have a local The Works you can grab Salaryman Kintaro (5 discs) for £4.99. I'm enjoying Heat Guy J but haven't started Salaryman yet but for a fiver you can't go wrong.

Easiest way is follow the link to the Wikipedia page...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bleach_%28manga%29

After Naruto I would say Bleach & Death Note are easily the next most popular series doing the rounds & are deffintiley worth your time.

Eureka 7 is pretty good too, well what I've got of it so far.

Unfortunately there isn't to much anime on UK tv.

Re: Anyone watch any anime series?

I can't track down Bleach anywhere in the UK as an Anime. It may exist as a manga comic but not as a DVD yet, though there is talk of it 'coming soon'.

Course I could be wrong on that.

Thats becuase it's not been picked up for the UK yet.

It's available on region 1 DVD from Viz Entertainment...try the usual supsects like Playusa or Movietyme (About £15 a DVD I think)

Watched the first DVD of Burst Angel last night & that seems to be VERY good as well...deffinitely got my attention as a series now.

Re: Anyone watch any anime series?

I liked 'Burst Angel' and it's got a great full-on opening title sequence, but unfortunately it seems to lose its way a bit towards the end, though the actual finale is back on form.

It's a shame there isn't more anime on TV, I think the market in the UK is big enough to sustain an anime channel.

And especially as they have the technology to broadcast both a subbed and dubbed version simultaneousy so folks can view it how they want. They tend to show them dubbed and I can't stand it. I'd rather not watch it at all.

I know & there's more than enough Anime out there to ensure it never gets repeated & to cater for all ages & tastes.

I'd especially love to see some of the older Force Five stuff again like Grendizer & Gaiking, thats the stuff that got me into anime in the first place.

Off topic, I used to have an Anime/Manga/Model shop many years ago, may be too many years ago as I only had a core set of customers, not enough to keep the shop open!!

But I think the market is big enough now, but never again!

Re: Anyone watch any anime series?

Old thread but I don't fancy starting a new thread to harvest tumbleweed

Have finally started watching the Ghost in the Shell S.A.C. DVDs I purchased an age ago. Really liking it. Reminds me of Alias (for which I need to buy the concluding fifth season for ). I like the little shorts after each episode with the robots as well

Quite enjoying the main Laughing Man story arc intersected with standalone episodes. Especially as the philosophy is not quite as heavy as in the films!

I really enjoyed the ghost in the shell series as well although half the time I forgot to watch those little short stories at the end of each episode. Can't see why it reminds you of Alias though? And you may as well save your money the 5th season of alias sucked.

I quite liked and anime series shown on Channel 4 many moons ago called fist of the North Star but who knows how good it is now, my tastes may have changed?
