Is anybody else watching 'Rome' ?

Is it just me who thinks that maybe the Romans maybe didn't spent all day and night swearing constantly and talking about arse-******* whores???

I've never heard the word F repeated so many times in quick succession (by a white man) on TV.

BBC2... what happened?

Sounds all good too me, you get to watch porn (effectively) and not have anyone blast you for it, because it's BBC2 and "educational", "entertainment" and "drama".

Re: Is anybody else watching 'Rome' ?

If there'd actually been some action then fair enough..... but all I got was the bloke out of trainspotting shouting about violently ****** someones wife, then a load of other random nothingness, interspersed with a f every few seconds, by seemingly every male character...?

I was just getting ready for Samuel.L.Jackson to turn up, and then it all just ended..... 'come back next week' etc....

Really shockingly bad TV....

Are you suggesting that the Romans were more genteel and prudish than present-day Italians?

It was the frequency of the usually much rarer C word that may have surprised even the sailors in the audience...

The violence seems to be flowing more freely than in the first series, but at the expense of a plot, still great telly though!

It's garbage because the characters swear a lot ?

You obviously know very little indeed about the historical period. What we're shown is a watered-down version for television - having said that, it's still head-and-shoulders above anything else being shown at the moment.

Re: Is anybody else watching 'Rome' ?

Perhaps they should have made the whole thing in Latin, with the swear words ****ed out in the English subtitles. But maybe scholars haven't found enough Latin swear words for that.

You'd probably be suprised just how much I do know about the historical period in question.

If you actually think that's how the Romans spoke, then I guess that makes you the target audience.

And no, I don't have a clue what 'deadwood' even is.

Take Rome, move it to the wild west, double the violence, triple the swearing (including the C word), throw in a healthy dose of racism and misogyny, stir, allow to simmer for 3 series and you have Deadwood.

A series by the same company and using the same format (real and invented characters all mixing during a specific period). Interesting, frequently difficult to watch and finally canceled due to high production cost.

I would recommend it, but I get the feeling you won't like it.

Re: Is anybody else watching 'Rome' ?

Don't misunderstand, I've nothing against strong language, where it fits..... but Rome last night just seemed to be trying too hard to use their quota of F's and C's?

Cowboys spoke English mainly....
I can well imagine them using the kind of language used today, but in Rome..... it just seemed 'forced' and pointless/unnecessary?

In The Dude's world, Romans were very dainty "pass-the-salt, father dear" people . Don't think that would make for a good drama, personally, but each to his own.

Re: Is anybody else watching 'Rome' ?

Actually, some of the English they speak is rather old-fashioned (don't you know). I think the patricians speak in old-fashioned polite English, while the plebs speak in expletives (though still in an RP accent in most cases). Mark Anthony swearing like a trooper is presumably supposed to indicate that he's been promoted from the ranks, and is out of place among the patrician elite.

Next time I watch, I'll pay more attention to how different people speak. It could be interesting.

Good points - Octavian, though, is seeped in patrician tradition and was able to let forth with a few expeletives, when his money and power were under threat. His fight scene with Antony showed what these people are capable of when challenged.

Re: Is anybody else watching 'Rome' ?

Finally got around to watching the first ep (should have gotten the HD versions off the net months ago I know) and enjoyed it although it seemed particularly tame compared to the first season.
A little nudity, plenty of off camera fighting and that was it (in the tradition of the emperor)

Hi,

The BBC has announced that Rome will now air every Sunday and Wednesday nights at 9pm, with a weekly repeat of both episodes on Thursday nights at about 11:20pm-1:15am.

Make sure to set your Sky Plus boxes, VCR's and DVD Recorders accordingly!

Also, note that the Thursday night repeats generally don't crush the credits, though there is a brief voiceover!

Re: Is anybody else watching 'Rome' ?

I love it, yes I thought Deadwood was bad with violence and language , but something very interesting about Rome that keeps you glued. Sometimes seems OTT, the english accents are just weird. Liked when Mark Antony and Gaius Octavian, had a good old fight.

Exclamation Re: Is anybody else watching 'Rome' ?

Hi,

Has anyone else noted that Season 2 of "Rome" appears to be much more comedic in tone, than Season 1? There's been some fantastic comedy in it, albeit very dark in tone, and some of the women have had superb one-liners too!

Lastly, if you saw last-night's screening, did anyone else note that the "Previously on Rome" and "Coming Next on Rome" sequences at the beginning and end of the actual episode, were poor-quality NTSC transfers, which had clearly been taken from US TV, whereas the actual episode was a clear NTSC-Pal transfer?! Does anyone know why the BBC did this, as the picture quality was appalling on these two parts, and didn't sit at all well against the high picture quality of the actual episode itself.

Re: Is anybody else watching 'Rome' ?

I suppose we should be glad that they're actually showing the recap (the plot is starting to get very compex) - if it was used in the last series I've forgotten it. The BBC have hung onto this series for a long time considering that they're alleged to have funded it and now they're rushing through the episodes mid-Summer. Well at least there are no adverts, that would wreck the flow !

Re: Is anybody else watching 'Rome' ?

Watching it right now for the first time ever...

What the deuce?! Seriously where is the plot? Just a lot of shouting between the men, sex between the men and woman and then general insignificance between the women

This is very poor. Why the hype? I don't care for historical accuracy - if I wanted a documentary I'd do just that - and I don't care one jot whether Rome is accurate or not. All I want is a story. Very poor. First and last time I am watching it

I'm assuming you mean last nights episode? Haven't watched it yet, so can't comment specifically about that, but it really is the sort of thing you need to have seen from the start, it's not something you can just dip into half-way through the second season.
