Hi. Bit of a stupid one, but it's been bugging me for quite a while...

Does anybody know how the shot was made in Contact (Jodie Foster) where young Ellie runs up the stairs into the bathroom, ges something out of the cabinet and then runs away as a reflection in the mirror?

I've not explained that well, but you know the shot I mean. It completely passed me by at first, but since then I've been trying to get my head around it and I can't. There was a vague explanation on the R2 DVD, but that didn't really explain it that well.

The mirror doesnt exist, it's computer generated.

Yes, got that bit sorted, but no matter how many times I watch it I still can't get my head around it. Not sure why.

Maybe I should go away and check again in the hope that I'll be able to explain better.

Is the film any good, I've never seen it and it is only £6.99 in HMV sale. I didn't buy it because no one I know has seen it. Any advice?

It's superb mate.

I didn't think I'd like it, but it turned out to be nothing like I expected. I was totally gripped from start to finish and wanted it to go on and on.

At £6.99 it's a bargain. I opted for the R2 myself, was £6.66 in an MVC sale. The R1 has a little more extras from what I remember, but the R2 has enough in itself to make the purchase worthwhile (especially as it's cheaper). Transfer is excellent as well.

Yes Contact is a brilliant movie!! Its not just another SF film, it questions your faith.... whooaa sorry thats deep dude. No truthfully it is a very very good movie.

Its not just a great movie, it is a pretty good dvd too. Lots of features and extras. Shame it is only in one of those horrible WB cardboard cases

It is a bit of a surprise this one and with a twist on 'being alone in a crowd'. I recall plenty of hype about it due to the quality not of the story but the transfer. It was considered amazing. These were also the days when naive reviewers were going on about just how much could fit on a disc and it was highly likely that punters would score with not only the film but OST's also - one word, capitalism/Hollywood.

It is a bit silly with Foster not thinking about the record time as a gimme, considering her status in the film as well above plancton - though I suppose you could argue she was to deep in. Great film. Great times. Great mates. Mate. Let's rock.

I think this is a really good film its one of the first films i ever bought on dvd.
Trouble is theres a certain essential chapter towards the end of the film that always skips and ive never been able to take the disc back cause i bought it in Cyprus

Great film one of my all time favourites, the mirror scene is excellent. Also check out the scene where the Camera shot fly's through young Ellie's bedroom window oh, the window is closed.

I concur I liked the film, and is quite thought provoking. I would like to add more but I do not want to ruin the film for you. Just one thing I take it you know it isn’t an action film.
It was wrote by Carl Sagan (amongst other things, of Cosmos fame).

Thats one of the reasons I did not instantly buy it as it looked very character based, and thought maybe it would be another crap impulse buy. I'm off to the shops now so I'll let you all know what i thought later/tomorrow.

Loads of extras, Crikey it will put to shame some quality disks released recently. It really is a very good film!

Always thought that there might be a contact 2 waiting around the corner. It really was one of those " but what happened next?" films ( movies ? ).

Great film, but I was never too sure of Fosters character, she didnt come through as the intelligent scientist, although she was very convincing throughout all the hi tension moments.

Cant beat it for that price.

Very good film, yes. I didn't think I'd like it either, but a friend put it on VCR as they got ready and I couldn't leave it. Ended up going out late.

One of the first DVDs I bought too.

The through the window shot is great also. Very subtle effects, which I tend to prefer.

One of my favourites too. It's a long film (144min I think) and there's 3 commentaries!

Anyone else think the menus are a bit confusing? The special effects feature is buried deep in there somewhere.

I've heard the audio book as read my Ms Foster. There's some significant differences in the story.

The most siginicant difference between the book and the film as far as plot is concerned IMHO is the end sequence.

One of the things the "aliens" couldn't solve was that pi was a transedental number (ie never ends) and they believed it should repeat. Ellie gets back after her encounter and begins hunting for the repeat in pi. And finds it. Easily. The "advanced" aliens have benn hunting for this for millenia.

I suspect this was far too high brow for the typical audience so put the blank video sequences in and the teaching kids mullarky.


Still one of my favourite films tho.

The character of Ellie is based on one of the existing SETI scientists, Jill Tartner, there is actually a blind SETI member too, although I can't remember his name

I thought that a bigger difference was the number of people who went in the capsule. I seem to remember something about the aliens doing some major galactic engineering as well. I suppose with such a big budget film you have to be careful not to alienate too many of the audience (pun not intended).

What about the sound on this disc, it's great!
The sequence where Ellie walks along the catwalk to the capsule shows off 5.1 amazingly with panning sound left to right, front to back & diagonally & LFE in large amounts!
Great film all round!
