Buffy - Original vs. New Edition packaging

Hi,

I've got seasons 1-5 of Buffy The Vampire Slayer in the original "collectors ediiton" packaging - ie the ones that came in the cardboard sleeves bolted together into a bound book type thingy.

I was thinking of completing the set with the new edition release, eg. http://www.dvd.co.uk/product.asp?id=2356101012

Does anyone know if the new sets will look totally out of place sat next to the original ones on the shelf or will they more or less blend in ?

Thanks in advance,

John

Re: Buffy - Original vs. New Edition packaging

They do look different, the book editions were really smart and the new cheaper sets don't look as good. But I doubt you'll get the book versions now, and if you do find them, they'll be expensive.

Note: Don't go for region 1 versions, they're fullscreen editions, the UK are 16:9

Well, some people prefer the 4:3 versions, as the programmes were composed for 4:3. The 16:9 versions can look a bit odd at times. Still, when I bought the complete series set I opted for region 2, for a number of reasons. However, anyone with a 4:3 TV would definitely be better off with the 4:3 version (assuming they can play region 1 DVDs); the 16:9 version on a 4:3 TV would be the worst of all worlds.

The 16:9 versions are the best. Only a couple of times can a camera man been seen for a fraction of a second in the whole series. The 4:3 versions look cramped to me after seeing the 16:9 versions.

I never liked the bible packaging as it scratched the discs regardless of what they tried to do to stop it. The two types of packaging would look very odd. How about selling teh bible packaging (could make quite a bit of money as they are OOP) and buy the cheaper M lock pacakaging which could be less than £15 per season.

Re: Buffy - Original vs. New Edition packaging

Thanks all for the ideas.

Thinking of what I'd get for my current sets if I were to sell them (to replace with all matching m-lock) made me realise I'd completely forgot about using ebay (or whatever) to finish off my collection with the matching sets. It seems 2nd hand sets of the old style go for just a bit less than new sets so I might as well keep an eye out and see what comes up.

Cheers,

John

Re: Buffy - Original vs. New Edition packaging

Flog them all and get a series 1-7 box. Takes less room and looks great!

Re: Buffy - Original vs. New Edition packaging

Personally, I'm not so keen on the complete box set packaging (which is what I've got). Yes, it takes up less space. But getting the indvidual season folders out of the box is more fiddly than just sliding them off a shelf. And, if you want to lend a season to someone, it's not very well protected, because it's only a thinnish cardboard folder, and the discs aren't fully enclosed. It's not that big a deal, but personally I'd prefer the separate season sets.

It's not the cameramen that are the problem. In fact, I've never noticed them myself. It's more of an aesthetic thing. In a few shots, people look artificially bunched up in the middle of the screen. More often it's not so obvious, but they haven't made good use of the extra space available in the 16:9 frame. Still, it's best not to worry about it. If you don't look for it, you probably won't notice.

Overall, I'm glad I've got the 16:9 version. I just wanted to point out that it has its downside too.

I have watched the complete Buffy loads of times and never thought that once. I like seeing the extra bits at the sides even if the people are not in it.

I have to agree that I've never been fond of the book packaging. I think the packaging looks very nice aesthetically but practically I'm always concerned about scratching my discs . if I had a choice when I was buying mine I would have gone for the cheaper M Lock packaging, not least because of the money savings but the ability to keep my discs in good condition is worth more, to me anyway. What I tend to do to save my discs is once removed from the book cases, I put the disc in a regular DVD case until I have finished watching all the episodes and extras. Then carefully try to put it back and get the next one.

With regards to the 16:9 , I definitely prefer to watch the episodes that way. It makes the show look more cinematic .

I scrapped the bible packaging (actually in loft somewhere). I got six disc cases from SVP and used these covers.

I've got the complete set but those covers look much better. I read that in America they get an extra disc and more special features, anyone know what they are?
