Original Star Trek Magazine/complete DVD collection

I have purchased the first issue for £2.99 (with DVD containing episodes 1-3)

I am considering subscribing to receive the entire collection but I have no idea how often the magazine/DVD comes out.
Fortnightly/ monthly??

Re: Original Star Trek Magazine/complete DVD collection

I would hang fire on these. All the Trek episodes from the original series are being remastered with new effects and HD resolution.

You will no doubt end up buying these, especially if the rumour is true about including the original versions on the HD discs.

More info at startrek.com

I downloaded one episode - it looked stunning. The new fly by's/orbits have a 60's feel to them still, it's one of the best CGI jobs I have ever seen - certainly does not detract from each episode.

What do you mean by "new effects"?
Do you mean that special effects in the programmes will be touched up in the same manner that Star Wars was ruined?

Re: Original Star Trek Magazine/complete DVD collection

They have altered some backdrops, and the fly by's of the Enterprise - like when you see it in orbit.

It's still the same old Enterprise model, with the spinning orange fronts on the nacells.

It still looks like it belongs in the 60's - a stertling job.

Seriously - I thought "God no, please don't ruin one of my favourite TV shows", but to CBS digital's credit (CBS are undertaking the remastering job on behalf of Paramount) they have done a fabulous job.

Trek never looked better, and rumour is that the HD and SD DVD releases will include the untouched episode also.

Like I say, lots of info at Startrek.com, lots of screenshots. I wouldn't buy the current versions on DVD just yet.

Re: Original Star Trek Magazine/complete DVD collection

STOP!!

These mags are a rip off as far as I am concerned. While the first one at 2.99 might be OK, there were 79 original trek episodes which would mean 26 issues of this and the rest are £7.99 each fortnightly.

This would work out at over £200 for the complete series, which is well over the odds. The complete Boxsets can be bought for about £120 new, even lower 2nd hand, and they of course will have they extras.

Give up now, and see if you can find the set cheap, or like Kieron says wait for the new releases (although I think these are HD/SD combis and could be more expensive)

Re: Original Star Trek Magazine/complete DVD collection

OK, I'll take your word for it.
Personally, I dont like the idea of messing with it.

I intensly dislike the junk they put in to my favourite Star Wars movies.

Apparently the new DVDs of the original Star Wars movies has the original un-touched versions, but a cunning decision was made by the producers not to have the untouched versions in anamorphic widescreen. They did the same thing with ET. Another classic ruined. Whenever I pick up a copy in HMV or other store, it is the ruined version.
You can only buy the original version of ET in a box set with the ruined one that I dont want.

Please....... All I want is my favourite sci-fi TV series as it was when I saw it as a boy.

I will take you advice and maybe hold fire till we get more information.

I can always order back issues of this magazine subscription later.

Re: Original Star Trek Magazine/complete DVD collection

I know the remastered space shots look pin sharp compared to the old footage, but the amazing thing is, is that the rest of the film has been cleaned to such a degree that "everything" is pin sharp - hence some of the crew shots above...

It looks stunning when you see it.

What if the person doesn't have HD or intend to get HD? At least with the DVD's. They can be bought now and enjoyed straight away rather than wait X number of years for the HD versions.

Personally, apart from the better background. The CGI spoils it for me and there was nothing wrong with it an has been watched like it for over 40 years. It doesn't make it look like a 1960's show anymore. I will never get the re-mastered DVD's. I will also probably never get HD capability as I have no need or want for it. MY current setup and SD DVD's will do for me for many years.

The orginal DVD versions can be bought for £28.97 for seasons 1 and 2 and £41.99 for season 3 at Amazon.co.uk. That is less than £100. The magazine version will be over twice that (and take up a lot more shelf space).

That's all fine and dandy, but there are better ways of owning the DVD's as they are now than buying the magazine to do it.

Hell you can get them all on VHS at car-boot sales for pennies.

If you're happy with your equipment level then why not.

Personally I wouldn't waste £100 now when a far superior version is on the horizon (with the originals intact too).

Cool Re: Original Star Trek Magazine/complete DVD collection

Kieron I hate to tell you after all that hard work, but I think you just broke Rule 9 of the forum Use images from 3rd parties' websites without their permission. Linking to an image on someone else's website without their permission is considered to be bandwidth theft. This is not a copyright issue but a bandwidth issue. We have had big problems with people linking to our images without permission and we don't allow members to do the same to other people.

If you have please can you remove the picture links and add links to the pages so people can go and have a look.

Oh Much as I like some of the new pics I still prefer the old inside of the Doomsday Machine to the new one.

These pictures are great! I have seen other new pictures of the Doomsday machine, and it was a silver metal ship, so I don't know where that came from. But this new Doomsday machine is perfect, as are all of the other screens.

Re: Original Star Trek Magazine/complete DVD collection

Thanks all for all your comments.

Point noted about the expense of the magazines. I hadn't actually got round to doing the maths yet, but 28x£7.99

Do the series 1,2&3 box-sets at Amazon that were mentioned in this thread form a nice "Star Trek" logo when placed together on the shelf?

Nice Pictures Kieron. Thats proved my point. I'd rather have the originals.

Re: Original Star Trek Magazine/complete DVD collection

HI,

Another two reasons not to buy this particular DVD collections, include:

1 - Issue 1/Disc 1 (at £2-99) doesn't include the Pilot Episode "The Cage" (which is unforgivable, seeing as this is suppossed to be the "Complete Collection", and...

2 - ... The magazine itself is pants. You could buy any one of the multitude of Star Trek refence books from Titan UK publishing, and they'll be of far more interest and value to true Star Trek fans, than any number of the magazines themselves.

Pooch

P.S. Anyone collecting the "James Bond" model car magazine/part-work however?

All the magazines are rubbish with these types of collection. Also, I bet they keep going over the same information again and again. I bet most if not all the info can be found in the Star Trek Fact Files.

The worst magazine I have seen was the Manga Force one. Even the X Files one wasn't very good.

"The Cage" will be delivered to you free if you subscribe.

However, £7.99 per issue is very expensive and I have decided not to buy any further issues.

I go in W.H.Smiths shop every week and look round at the mags stand to see if there’s any new publications, never saw issue one of the Bond cars as is the case with most of these publications issue one seems either to go quick or is never put there in the first place.

I admit, that the magazine for the "Manga Force Collection" was dire, but if you've never seen or owned any of ths actual anime movies/series that it's selling, then the discs aren't that bad.

Almost all of them are in 16:9 widescreen, or the original 4:3 version, and all of them offer both an English-dubbed version in DD5.1 or a Japanese DD5.1 audio track, with English subtitles.

In my eyes, that's not too bad. If I didn't already own some of the titles, then they'd be worth getting, if - that is - you could find a newsagent that actually sold each issue (rather than, as most do, cease selling it after issue 6, and they then require you to order every issue from them, or subscribe via the magazine company itself)!

However, the Bond car collection, isn't too bad, with the models being pretty darn good, if I do say so myself. Although the magazine itself isn't that good (unsurprisingly).

Re: Original Star Trek Magazine/complete DVD collection

I wouldn't bother with this one. I had to play the DVD at volume 50 on my TV and good quality player and it was still tinny (I usually listen to TV at 20-25, DVDs rarely more than 30). The sound on the first episode was also out of synch by about half a second. Nicely packaged, but shoddy quality DVDs - not worth 2.99 for the first issue, never mind 7.99 per issue for the rest. My recommendation? Avoid. Buy Star Trek TOS on DVD elsewhere and buy a good reference book instead of the magazines if you're a serious fan.
