watching DIVX files of TV shows

please note I am in know way recomending the downloading of illegal DivX files, just asking how to best watch them.

At the moment I have tried streaming to the 360 (this fails often though as half the time it won't recognise my laptop), burning to a DVD and watching through DVD player and plugging my laptop into my lcd via VGA but often the results are not desirable.

How have you found is the best way to watch DivX files.

Re: watching DIVX files of TV shows

I've always gone for the burn to rewriteable DVD+R/W, slap it in the dvd player, watch it.

Repeat process the following week reusing disc.

Re: watching DIVX files of TV shows

if your dvd player will play the files, then burn to a dvdrw and voila

if not, then the xbox1 is good, and can play higher resolution files that dvd players can't

or, watch on the computer and use VLC media player, which plays prettymuch anything and lets you crop black bars etc

or convert to dvd with avi2dvd or similar programs and guides from www.videohelp.com

vlc is completely free. look in the tools section of the videohelp.com website for a download. it's not that big a file. it's the video equivilent of winamp (the best mp3/audio player) vlc is what i use on my pc to play video material. i have a pc connected to my 50" plasma and use vlc to output. it'll even play HD ts files

the modded xbox1 is a good option, but i found the PQ isn't the best on some of the higher quality files, but it plays them and allows 5.1 sound, without mucking about. you can get a xbox1 from cex.co.uk for £35

Re: watching DIVX files of TV shows

Is there not a downloadble programme that can be used on a Media Centre PC to enable DivX/Xvid streaming to the 360?

Re: watching DIVX files of TV shows

I stream to my 360 using TVersity after a little while to set up correctly it works great for DIVX/XVID.

If you have an Xbox (orig.), I would have to agree with those who have said XBox Media Center, I would be using this but my brother-in-law has nabbed the Xbox

If you want to connect it to your TV, then there is no better and easier option imo. I have two modded Xbox's in the house just for this use!

Another vote for modded Xbox with XBMC installed. It's superb for playing back just about any codec on your regular AV kit and especially good when hooked up with a component cable to a flatscreen. Does a great job with music and photos too, as well as handling some kinds of internet radio and even giving you a weather report.

The only drawback is that it won't handle sources encoded at full hi-def resolutions (720p or 1080i) very well. Mind you it works perfectly with 960x540p divx files which are often touted as hi-def rips (they're typically 750 megs as opposed to the 350 meg SD encodes).

Re: watching DIVX files of TV shows

try a Dlink media lounge

I use one of these it works perfectly streaming Dixv files to the tv, saves a lot of time and hassle, no more burning to disc, just download and watch...!

The wireless part isn't all it's cracked up to be for streaming video (music is fine)...so i've wired it to the router which does the job.

There's also a HD version out as well.
