Sky onscreen writing

in this day & age alot of us have widescreen tv's and im annoyed with having the football scores & the sky logos in the middle of my screen

why when we pick widescreen in setup can the logo not move over to the far left of the screen where its not so obtrusive

also whilst watching sky this week all the way through it it had writing about what was on later

i dont want that i want an empty screen

they seem to be able to get rid of it all for adverts

SKY .... stop annoying me

Re: Sky onscreen writing

The majority of idents are hard encoded in to the broadcast so they remain in the 4:3 safe area regardless of if you choose 16:9 or 4:3 output.
SSHD has one ident in the 16:9 safe area while the score remains in the 4:3 safe area, I would like to know the reason for that since the only thing I can think of is second location 4:3 option.

It is good to see SKY1HD using the 16:9 placement for it's ident although even better if they removed it totally

The fact is, until a vast majority (over 70%) of UK TV viewing is undertaken on 16:9 TV's, then Sky (and every other TV channel) will keep any potentially pertinent information/advertising/promotional guff in the 4:3 safe-area! Teh simple fact is, if people can't see the advertising/information, then Sky (and other channels) believe that people are missing out on something important, and advertisers will simply not pay to advertise something interactively (e.g. via that awful Press The Red Dot feature), if they believe that people can just zoom/resize the picture so that it no longer gets in the way of their viewing.

All-in-all, it comes down to money!

Re: Sky onscreen writing

idents are one thing, more annoying is advertising a programme on next or next week! with permanent text on the screen, ie Sky two - with Race to Dakkar over the shows, dont care about Race to bloody Dakkar, but i do care about the repeat of SG1 or The Lost Rooms.

Re: Sky onscreen writing

I recorded Ugly Betty on it's E4 screening the other week and they had an inprogramme graphic prmoting "Skins" all the way through well not during the commercials obviously after all the viewers are not as important.

The text was bad enough but it was much brighter then the E4 logo and really stood out, a couple of times in the first 5 minutes I nearly deleted the recording and setup the later CH4 broadcast.

Thankfully SKY1 doesn't do it often although I had to sit through a recent SKY2 "big ron" insert thanks to one of the few times there were 3 programmes on at the same time I wanted to watch

Re: Sky onscreen writing

Sky 2 and Sky 3 have been very bad with this.
I wanted to watch something on sky 2 the other night but the Logo in the right hand side put me off it.

Re: Sky onscreen writing

Another reason to download US broadcasts.

yes, they have Ident's too, but they are usually much more transparent, smaller and in a far less obtrusive position, ie. in the bottom left or right hand corner away from faces.

I remember reading a BBC document some years ago about the placement of DOG's and it stated (not verbatim here) that the most desirable position of logo's was the upper left hand corner as the human eye reads naturally from left to right and top to bottom and therefore the logo would be most prominent.

If the DOG must stay as part of the corporate branding, move it to the bottom, lose the extra "brand new/almost new/9th repeat this week" along with pointless "Coming up next/next week/next year" and tone down the opacity.

Yes I find the bottom right to be far easier to ignore when I watch US sourced content although the CW logo is ridiculous and US scifi and USA channel go graphic crazy (both nbc/universal channels).

Perhaps as the TV advertising market continues to weaken they may look to the presentation of the programme to draw people back into broadcast telly.

Here's that document.

Re: Sky onscreen writing

I got a reply from Sky................

Quote:
Thank you for contacting us regarding the on screen adverts for Race to Dakar on Sky Two.

In a world of increasing programme choice and multi channels, Sky believe that the added on screen promotional service benefits viewers by letting them know, amongst other thins what is coming up later in the schedule.

A number of designs were developed in order to meet our promotional briefs using less intrusive designs as we obviously want to try and ensure this does not have a negative impact on our viewer's enjoyment.

Obviously, it has been not been successful where your individual viewing is concerned and we were sorry to hear that.

Viewer feedback is important to us as it allows us to monitor how our decisions impact on subscribers. Your comments will be fed back to all departments involved in this development.

We appreciate you taking the time to contact us.

Kind regards

Morag Carson

Re: Sky onscreen writing

They annoy me to all logos should be got rid of on our tv screens. Why cant broadcasters make it so they appear for 30 secs or so then dissapear each time you turn the tv over ?

I've seen that a few times on Sky Three, and sent them a couple of emails complaining about it. I'm disgusted to hear that E4's now doing it too.

I always try to PVR a Channel 4 showing in preference to an E4 showing, if only to avoid the logo. (Ditto for BBC1/2 instead of BBC3/4.) But note that the Sunday afternoon showing of Ugly Betty on C4 has a T4 logo!
