Question Who is your favourite director?

I know it is difficult to narrow down to just one, but if you had to, who would be your favourite film director of all time?

I'm going to have to pick Steven Spielberg. To be honest he's not my favourite director. I have many favourite directors, but if you're making me pick only one, I pick him because he's made so many great movies and films, as opposed to just one or two, that I couldn't live without.

If it were multiple directors, I'd probably include Spielberg, but not so high on my priority list, and include also Tim Burton, Steven Soderbergh, John McTiernan, Alex Proyas, Bryan Singer, Woody Allen, Ang Lee, Quentin Tarantino, Sam Raimi, James Cameron (with a big exception to 'Titanic'), David Fincher, the Coens... and of course, Alfred Hitchcock.

Directors I'd like to kill with my bare hands (just joking of course ): George Lucas, Joel Schumacher, Stan Kubrick (too late I know), Paul Verhoeven...

Well I would have to say Kubrick.

Although none of his films feature in my top 20, Eyes Wide Shut, Full Metal Jacket, The Shining, Barry Lyndon, A Clockwork Orange, Dr Strangelove and Paths of Glory would all be in my top 100.

Like Pointon, I have gone for consistancy. On that score Martin Scorsese and Joel Coen come close, although they dont have films in my top 20 either.

The only time I will watch or buy a film without knowing anything other than who directed is when it's Joel and Ethan Coen or Ridley Scott.
I like the subject matter they choose and how they handle it.

3. Christopher Nolan

(shortly followed by Coen Bros., Steven Spielberg,
Quentin Tarantino, .... - in no particular order)

Yes, only two films but I love them both (both films, not both brothers ). That means I love 100% of their output. Don't forget, they also happen to have done my favourite movie of all time too

It's not quantity, it's quality

Whats the matter with Paul Verhoeven. He gave us Robocop, Total Recall and Starship Troopers you either like his OTT style or your don't, I like, it at least he's consistent.

Don't really have a main favorite who's films I would see with out question except maybe for lynch and another possible Fincher.

Saw a Robert Redford directed film today which was incredible beautifully filmed some scenes had a vision I did not think he would have as a director.
