How are you all. I’m afraid that this TV Update for you all, will be a little different to normal: it will be more-or-less as long as usual, but the descriptions may not always be so detailed. Essentially, this purely because I have been very busy this week, and I didn’t want to let you all down, by delaying the update by three days, simply to include more detail. Anyway, I hope you will forgive me for this minor indiscretion, and that you enjoy the update’s recommendations.

Important Notice:
All of the following programmes are correct at time of writing. However, because much of the World Cup and Wimbledon coverage will be live this week on BBC and ITV channels, some items may be rescheduled (earlier or later than listed), replaced, or cancelled at short notice. As such, please double-check to see if any scheduling amendments have been made, prior to watching or viewing anything listed below, with your usual TV listings guide supplier. Programmes that may be susceptible to scheduling changed, are marked with a double-asterisk symbol, next to their name! Thanks!

Saturday 24th June
**NEW: Big Apple – 9:00-10:00pm
Another new, but short-lived US crime drama starts tonight on ITV4, who are really keeping British viewers hooked to their channel with a lot of decent shows! Just six episodes to watch, before CBS pulled the plug on it. Stars Ed O'Neill, Jeffrey Pierce, David Strathairn, Titus Welliver, Michael Madsen, Donnie Wahlberg, Sebastian Roche, and Samantha Buck, as the FBI fight against the criminals who are slowly taking-over New York, post 9/11. Repeated later tonight, at 2:05am. (ITV4)

**FILM: Bullet In The Head (18) – 10:00pm-12:40am
One of John Woo’s finest ever films: a sprawling epic, set amongst the Vietnam War, that follows three young men, as they grow-up, and turn to crime in order to raise money. It’s very violent, and there are some brutally uncompromising scenes, but it’s the Far East equivalent to “The Deer-Hunter”, and for that reason alone, you have to watch this. Showing uncut, in Widescreen, and hopefully with the original Mandarin audio, with English subtitles. Highly Recommended. (ITV4)

**Supernatural – 10:25pm-1:25am
For any of you who haven’t been watching this new US fantasy/thriller, a repeat run of the entire first season starts tonight! Episodes 1-3 air tonight, and then the series continues each Saturday night, for the duration of the summer holiday. (ITV2)

**FILM: Big (PG) – 4:20-6:00pm

FILM: The Untouchables (15) – 10:00pm-12:15am
Stunning period crime drama, loosely based on the original TV series, and the real life story of Al Capone, about US Treasury Agent Eliot Ness who aimed to put an end to Capone’s life of crime, with any legal means possible. Kevin Costner, Sean Connery and Robert De Niro, (all providing some of their most memorable performances ever), alongside a superb music score by composer Ennio Morricone, bring this amazing film to life! Truly awesome in every respect! One of the best films ever made, and an exemplary piece of real-life history brought to the silver-screen, that all true cinema fans will want to watch again and again. Contains occasional scenes of very strong violence (particularly early-on in the movie), and some strong language too. Showing uncut, and in Widescreen. Highly Recommended! (Sky 1)

The Best Ever Spitting Image Moments – 10:00-11:05pm
The hilarious political puppet satire, is given a one-night lease of life, as latex versions of Ant and Dec introduce the best and worst bits of the hit 1980’s comedy show. If you were too young at the time, to see the series, then here’s your chance to see a bit of TV history, that will bring back many fond memories for your parents! This was one of ITV’s best programmes, and it still stands out as some of the most wonderful British comedy they ever made. Will contain bad language. (ITV1)

Spitting Image: First And Last – 11:00pm-12:05am
If you enjoyed the above programme, then ITV4 are showing the first and last ever episodes made of the hilarious comedy show. Great fun, and almost all of the characters were really as wretched in real-life as they are portrayed in the show. Arthur Scargill, John Major and Maggie Thatcher were always my faves from the long-running series. (ITV4)

FILM: The Producers (PG) – 11:30pm-1:00am
Mel Brooks outstanding comedy, with Gene Wilder, about an off-Broadway theatre producer who comes to realise that producing the worst play in history, is likely to be more lucrative and successful, than writing a genuine work of art. So he sets out to produce the worst play he can, including a musical number entitled “Springtime For Hitler”! It’s outlandish, risqué, and – to a certain degree – in bad taste, but it’s very, very funny. Contains some swearing, and material that may be considered inappropriate for the younger members of your family. Showing uncut, and in Widescreen. (BBC2)


Monday 26th
** Supernatural – 11:00pm-Midnight
Tonight, should see the penultimate episode of Season 1 airing on terrestrial TV, with the series finale on Wednesday night. However, for some bizarre reason, ITV hasn’t taken note of the World Cup into account. Essentially, if they air live football tonight, then “Supernatural” will air tonight, and also on Wednesday. But, if the football over-runs, or isn’t shown on ITV1 at all, then tonight’s episode is dropped completely, but the Wednesday night episode will still go ahead, irrespective of tonight’s scheduling! This could then result in ITV screwing up the final episode on Wednesday, if they don’t take care with tonight’s episode! Be warned! (ITV1)

NEW: NYPD Blue – 11:05pm-12:05am
More4 is messing about with the scheduling again. Tonight’s episode airs at 11pm only. However, the remainder of this week’s episodes all get two showings each night, at approximately 11:00pm and 2:00am approximately. Let’s hope that Channel 4 don’t keep messing fans of the show about any more, because this kind of treatment is completely unjustified, after fans have been so patient! (More4)

Huff – 1:50-3:00am
Start of a repeat run of all 13 episodes that form Season 1, before all-new Season 2 starts in a couple of weeks time! When one of Dr Hoffstadt’s teenage patients kills himself during a counselling session, the Doctor is forced to deal with the legal, professional and ethical dilemmas he finds himself in. Along for the ride, is his mother, his wife, and his own teenage son, who is just discovering the joys of sex! An excellent HBO comedy drama, starring Hank Azaria, (who performs the voice of Moe in “The Simpsons”), Paget Brewster, Oliver Platt (“The West Wing”) and Blythe Danner. Viewers should be warned, the language is ultra-explicit: part-way between “The Sopranos” and “Deadwood”, so this is not for the easily offended. But if you can cope with the language, this is a beautifully crafted series. Episodes air each weeknight, late at night (times vary each night). Showing uncut and in Widescreen. (FX)


Tuesday 27th
FILM: Joan Of Arc (12) – 9:30am-1:15pm
Lengthy two-part TV mini-series, starring Leelee Sobieski as the French queen who was burnt at the stake, for allegedly delivering messages from God, during the war-torn 14th Century France. Not as impressive as the Luc Besson movie “Joan Of Arc: The Messenger”, but still an interesting drama nonetheless. Contains some mild scenes of violence, and occasional bad language. Showing uncut. (True Movies Channel)

FILM: Hilary And Jackie (15) – 2:55-5:00am
Shockingly bad-scheduling for this beautifully-crafted drama, about the troubled sisters, Jacqueline and Hilary du Pre, who were both musically gifted. Rachel Griffiths and Emily Watson star as the sisters, in this haunting film. Contains strong language and some scenes that may upset sensitive viewers. Showing uncut and in Widescreen. (Channel 4)


Wednesday 28th
FILM: LA Law: The Movie (12) – 3:40-5:30pm
After the long-running TV series of the same-name concluded, Steven Bochco created a 2002 reunion movie, bringing back some of the characters for one more case. When Michael Kuzak is forced to deal with a case against his former lover, rivalry and friendship starts to harm proceedings, and the goodwill he held at law-firm Mackenzie Brackman rapidly starts to dissolve, into threats, fighting and mistrust. Not the best film, by any means, but not too bad either. Contains some mild bad language. Showing uncut and in Widescreen. (Five)

Star Trek – 7:00-8:00pm
I’m not the hugest fan of this cult sci-fi series, but there were three episodes from the original 1960’s show, that were banned for various, during their original run in the UK, by the BBC. This is one of those episodes. Entitled “Miri”, this Season 1 story deals with a planet inhabited only by children. At first, nothing seems too obscure, except for the ages, but some of the children have a very different view about the way their planet is being run by their leader, and want to take matters into their own hands, by violent force. The episode was originally banned, because of the show depicting violence by, and against, children (and we’re talking 7-12 year olds here), including brief but still morally contentious scenes of torture and death. By today’s standards, it’s all a bit blasé, but it’s worth a look, just to see how far this show was willing to push the sensitive rules about content in TV shows, for the time! Also repeats tomorrow morning at 11am. (Sci-Fi Channel)

FILM: Rawhead Rex (18) – 12:50-2:45am
Rare showing of this Clive “Hellraiser” Barker written and directed movie, based on his own short-story. It’s not a great movie, by any definition, but as a pre-cursor to “Hellraiser”, it’s certainly enjoyably naff. Contains scenes of gory violence, and strong language. Showing uncut. (The Horror Channel)


Thursday 29th
Schedule Change: Third Watch
Those of you who are following “Third Watch” on FX, will notice that they originally intended to run Seasons 1, 2 and 3, three times each, back-to-back. However, this has now changed. Last night, saw the end of the second complete run of the first three Seasons, with some episodes cut and missed for their pre-9pm transmission. It is hoped that later on this year, FX will run one, single complete and totally uncut, late-night (or very early-morning) repeat of all three Seasons back-to-back, for those of you who have missed any episodes, or who want to see the show completely uncut, with all episodes airing, after the 9pm Watershed! Details will follow, as soon as I hear back from FX themselves! Don’t panic, though. You still have Seasons 4, 5 and 6 to look forward to, in the New Year, and it seems a dead-cert that you’ll see them on FX, well before Channel 4 get their fingers out! At least, at this rate, anyway!

Navy NCIS – 8:00-9:00pm
Missed any of the episodes on Five? Didn’t bother to catch the show on FX, because it didn’t seem that great? Just want to see what everyone else has been talking about? FX are giving you the chance to see this excellent US drama series, right from the very beginning of Season 1. Airing each weekday night, at the same time, (in place of “Third Watch” – see note above), let us introduce you to Jethro Gibbs, Tony DiNozzo, Abby Sciutto, Dr “Ducky” Mallard, and Caitlin Todd: agents who all investigate matters that involve Navy officers, in their own, unique way. Some episodes will be edited for content! Five, however, appear to be showing – so far, at least – episodes uncut. This may change, however, when they get towards some of the stronger Season 1 and 2 episodes later on! (FX)


NEW: House MD – 9:00-10:00pm
It’s the Season 2 finale, and despite Five partially ruining it for viewers with the preview at the end of last week’s penultimate episode, this is another corker, from a show that has become probably the finest TV import in recent times for terrestrial fans! When House is shot and wounded, by a disgruntled husband of an ex-patient of his, the team are forced to deal with matters on their own. Meanwhile, House is put on numerous pain-killers and medicines, only to find the combination of drugs causes him to have severe hallucinations, which turns him into an even angrier, and more miserable than normal! Fans will be chuffed to know that Five has bought the rights to Season 3, and will begin airing it in February 2007! Season 2 is expected to be also shown on the Hallmark Channel, later this year (albeit not in Widescreen), and hopefully both Season 1 and 2 repeated on Five, before February next year! (Five)

Ultraviolet – 9:00-10:00pm
Short-lived UK horror series from Channel 4, (of all people), about vampires living in and around London, who are out to take over the world, whilst looking for a more permanent supply of food – us! Starring “this Life” actor Jack Davenport, and a host of other British drama stars, this became a cult show. Sadly, only six episodes were ever made, and a rather poor DVD release came out, many years ago, which has long been deleted (though copies can still be bought). One of the better British attempts at making mature, literate science-fiction/horror. (Sci-Fi Channel)

NEW: Out Of Practice – 9:30-10:00pm
All-new US comedy, with some great reviews, and a brilliant cast. Henry Winkler, Stockard Channing, and Christopher Gorham star in this comedy series about recently divorced doctors. Their three children, are also in the same profession. With the family in permanent conflict with each other, no one seems to be capable of working out how this will affect their future relationships, let alone their own patients. More to the point, none of them seem to care. But someone, somewhere, is going to have to make the first move. From the writers of “Frasier” and directed by Kelsey Grammer himself, this should be an interestingly intelligent and acerbic show. Hopefully, if it’s even half as good as “Frasier” was, then this could be required viewing for all comedy fans. This is episode 1 of 20, that forms Season 1. (LivingTV)

Dragnet – 11:00pm-12:05am
Start of another repeat run of Season 1 of this modern update of the classic 1950’s detective series, which is actually remarkably good for a remake. Ed O’Neill (from “Big Apple” and “Married: With Children”) stars as Detective Joe Friday, who with his new, younger, partner Detective Frank Smith (Ethan Embry), profile the apparent suicide of a porn actress, but with her body sprayed in silver paint. Things take a turn for the worse, though, when her immediate boss is also discovered dead. Is there a link between the two victims, and their killer, or is this pure coincidence? Dark and gritty drama, from the producers of hit crime series “Law And Order”. Hopefully, ITV will repeat all of Season 1 in their entirety this time around, and then move onto Season 2! (Season 1 has just 12 episodes, and then a further 10 for Season 2.) Excellent theme tune as well, based on the Mikos Rosza original! (ITV1)

FILM: The Beast In The Cellar (18) – 1:35-4:00am
Another dodgy Video Nasty classic, gets a welcome TV airing! This British chiller from 1970, was directed by Tony Tenser, and stars actress Beryl Reid. Two sisters grow up, with a brother who appears to be socially disadvantaged. At first, things seem relatively normal, but one day, the brother is locked in the cellar, because of his increasingly strange and disturbing actions. Manacled to the walls for several years, the boy’s body and mind fester, planning a day of revenge against his society at large. That day has now come, and he wants out. His first target, is his two sisters, who are now nearing the end of their lives – in more ways than one! Thankfully, Sci-Fi look to be showing the original, longer and more violent UK version, running to about 105 minutes. (The US print was cut down to less than 90 minutes!) Hopefully, it will include all the footage the BBFC originally censored. Not the best horror movie, but worth a look, if you like something out-of-the-ordinary. Contains strong violence, scenes of gore and bloodshed, and occasional strong language. Showing uncut. (Sci-Fi Channel)

24 – 3:05-4:45am
For those of you who have missed the last two episodes (shown on the 11th and 18th June respectively), Sky 1 is giving you another chance to see them back-to-back, outside of the usual weekly repeats. If you haven’t seen any of Season 5 yet, then don’t read the following spoiler. SPOILER STARTS HERE Those of you who have been following things, then you may remember, that Jack was still being followed by ruthless President Logan, who was determined to erase Bauer from the face of the planet. Having obtained the tape recording he desperately needed to save the world again, Jack was forced to trade it to Christopher Henderson, in order to save old-flame Audrey from bleeding to death, after Henderson had shot her. As Henderson goes on the run, a new character comes into play, and Jack and Logan are forced to take even more desperate measures. Meanwhile, over at C.T.U. Headquarters, things start to take a dramatic turn for the worse, when a long-term friendship is tested to the limit, and Buchanen and Chloe are backed into a corner that forces them to take measures that could effectively end both of their careers permanently! END SPOILER! We’re rapidly running into final few episodes, and this is becoming even more addictive than ever, despite some of the far-fetched events that have recently occurred. Still one of the most enjoyable shows on TV, these two episodes cover 3:00-4:00am, and 4:00-5:00am, ready for you to continue with Sunday night’s episode (2nd July) as usual. Both of these episodes should also be repeated on Friday 30th on Sky 2, between 11:00pm and 1:00am. (Sky 1)


Friday 30th
** FILM: Casino Royale (PG) – 3:30-6:00pm
Ahead of the new remake, here’s a chance to see the original version, of the Bond movie, starring David Niven, Peter Sellers and Ursula Andress. Secret Agent 007 is called out of retirement to halt the threat of a deadly terrorist agency, known only as SMERSH! Technically, along with “Never Say, Never Again”, this is not considered an official Bond movie. As such, you should probably treat it as a film that bears similar themes to the official franchise, just with less panache. Watch it, with low expectations, and it should be reasonably enjoyable, if oh-so-cornball! Contains some mild action violence, some sexual innuendo, and mild bad language. Showing uncut and in Widescreen. (ITV1)

Banned Horror Night – 9:00pm-2:45am
Fancy a night of horror, which the BBFC still don’t want you to see uncut? Enjoy a night of slice-and-dice, exploitation horror, with back-to-back showings of the uncut, uncensored versions of the “Slumber Party Massacre” trilogy! Wallow in nearly six hours, of sleaze, pervery, and gory violence, as numerous female co-ed’s are ritually slaughtered, by a psychopathic serial-killer, who likes his killings to be fresh and pretty! Trash film-making at its best (or worst), depending on your viewpoint of these seminal 1980’s slasher classics. Contains nudity, sexual material, strong language and lashings of gory violence, as well as other material some viewers may find offensive or distasteful. All three films showing uncut. (The Horror Channel)

Tales Of The Unexpected – 12:05-1:10am
Although this series started repeating a couple of weeks back, it’s not being shown in any specific order, by series, them or anything else. As such, it won’t overly affect your enjoyment of this cult drama anthology series, written and narrated by Roald Dahl, watching the series out-of-sequence. Unfortunately, no details were available as to which episode(s) were going to be shown. Worth watching, if you enjoy short stories, of the mysterious, the unexplained, the macabre, or the deliciously twisted! Contains some adult material, that may be unsuitable for some younger audience members, hence the late-night slot. (Episodes would probably receive anything between a PG to an 18 certificate nowadays!) (ITV3)

** FILM: Twins Of Evil (15) – 12:30-1:55am (or 12:20-1:45am, if football not shown. Not all BBC1 regions are airing this film!)
Classic Hammer Horror vampire film, most notorious because of the two women who play the lead “Twins”: actresses Madeleine and Mary Collinson were – at the time – also two Playboy Playmate centrefold models! Peter Cushing stars as the women’s great uncle, who all live in the shadow of the evil and foreboding Karnstein Castle. Rumour has it, that the Castle houses vampires, and one day, a human will fall prey to a vampiric spell, and turn her into an evil blood-sucker! As the girls go off to explore the Castle, unbeknownst to their uncle, one of them is bitten, but which one?! Gory, sexy and quite well made, if not the best of its kind, it’s still an enjoyable film, and certainly more intelligent than it sounds. Although a “15” certificate, it’s a very strong “15”, only recently downgraded from the original 18 certificate, earlier this year! As such, viewer discretion is advised. Contains (brief) male and (frequent) female frontal nudity, a fair amount of sexual material, and a good dollop of scenes of gore and violence. Showing uncut and in Widescreen. (BBC1)

FILM: Game Over! Kasparov Versus The Machine (PG) – 1:10-2:40am
Late-night repeat of this excellent documentary exploring how Russian Chess Grandmaster, Garry Kasparov, was beaten by the world’s best chess computer, Deep Blue. Over a set of five games, the man who was deemed unbeatable took on a specially-developed computer, created by a team of IBM’s best US computer scientists and technicians. But, after the first game, problems arose, when it appeared to Kasparov that the machine wasn’t actually determining which moves it should play, but another, unnamed, human chess-player. Despite promises from the IBM team, to show Kasparov what decisions their creation was making in the first two games, they suddenly went all cloak-and-dagger on him, leading to wild speculations around the world, and teetered the chess world on the verge of another Cold War. A fascinating expose, of the man, the machine, and the game of chess itself, that plays out like one of the best thrillers ever made! If you thought chess was a boring game for nerds, this may just change your mind! Contains one use of very strong language (which appears to have bypassed the BBFC’s usual close-attention), but otherwise no other contentious material. Showing uncut and in Widescreen. Part-subtitled. (BBC4)

Yes, FuilmFour does go free-to-air in July, but not until the 20th July 2006!

Welcome, TV Fans!

I’m back once more, with another TV Update for you all. That’s two updates, in the space of about ten days – aren’t I a generous soul?! For a change, we’ll start off with the latest news of things that you should all be looking forward to starting over the next 4-6 weeks, and then the latest update, covering 1st to the 7th of July respectively. Just one word of warning: this update could well be the longest one I’ve ever compiled. It runs to around 12 sides of A4 paper. I hope it’s worthwhile. Enjoy!


TV News
Artsworld
After several complaints and concerns, it seems that Artsworld are finally going to investigate the problems they’ve been encountering, when broadcasting classic pre-1940’s black-and-white movies, in a cropped 16:9 widescreen format, which radically changes what the viewer sees, from what the directors of these films, wanted us to see. Previously, any 4:3 material, was shown in a square-box format, with black borders appearing on all sides of your TV, irrespective of whether you own a regular 4:3 or newer 16:9 TV, and irrespective of how your Sky box and TV were set-up! Then, for a brief period, 4:3 films were shown in their original 4:3 format, but appeared terribly grainy. A week or two ago, these same 4:3 films were then cropped at the top and bottom of their image, to produce a new widescreen-compatible image, which resulted in people’s heads and legs being chopped-off, resulting in a terrible film image! Affected films included “M”, “La Regle Du Jeu”, “Battleship Potemkin”, “Stalker”, “L’Age d’Or”, and “Un Chien Andalou”. Hopefully, I will get a complete investigation response from Artsworld, about what’s being going on, and what they intend to do to rectify this situation. Until then, all further transmissions of these films will be cropped from their original 4:3 format, into a 16:9 compatible format instead! No other programmes or films are affected, as far as I can tell.

Film Four
Official confirmation has been shown, that FilmFour will finally go free-to-air from the 20th July 2006, on Sky, Cable, Freeview and Freesat! Initially, the schedules will start at 3pm, and end at 3am, each day of the week. At the moment, there aren’t many details of what is going to be shown, but hopefully there will be a reasonably entertaining mix of old classics, new gems, and the best of old and new foreign-language movies. Unfortunately, despite the claim that they’ll be showing the films “the way they were meant to be seen”, every film will have advert breaks, and more than likely, any 2.35:1 film, will be cropped to a 1.85:1 format instead. There are also concerns about censorship of certain films. As FilmFour will be a free-to-air channel, it will have to conform to all OFCOM rules and regulations. For the most part, this won’t affect many films, because regulations state that as long as a film has a BBFC certificate, it can be legally aired on UK television. This also applies to 18-rated movies too. However, don’t go expecting “I Spit On Your Grave” or “Irreversible” just yet! There is one accommodation, that FilmFour is also going to have to subscribe too. There are certain films that will have 18 certificates, and that the BBFC have approved for being safe for viewing at home, uncut and uncensored. Sadly, some films have been decreed as still being unsuitable for home viewing on free-to-air channels, and have had previous OFCOM restrictions applied. Such affected titles probably include:
- “The Idiots” (to remove sight of an erection, and to tone down an orgy sequence);
- “Taxi Zum Klo” (will be cut, to remove scenes of gay sex)
- “Bad Lieutenant” (to remove scenes of Harvey Keitel pleasuring himself, whilst two women are forced to watch him, and to soften the depiction of the rape of the nun)
- “Ai No Corrida: In The Realm Of The Senses” (as per the BBFC-approved video version, to remove the sight of adult-child genital contact)
and several others.
It’s not the end of the world, but it does mean that FilmFour’s “Extreme” and “World” films, may not be as wide-ranging as when they were a subscription-only channel. We shall see. One positive note, is that there are strong rumours that FilmFour will show PIN-encrypted 12 and 15-certificate movies earlier than the usual scheduling would allow (probably after 4pm for 12’s, and after 6pm for 15’s).

“The Hades Factor” comes to Sky 1 from 16th July. Stephen Dorff stars as a US soldier who discovers a deadly and highly contagious virus is being used in Afghanistan. Based on the Robert Ludlum novel of the same name, and shot in Berlin, California, Toronto and Canada, this could prove to be the sleeper-show of the year! The show also stars Anjelica Huston, Mira Sorvino and Sophia Myles.

Season 3 of the popular casino-drama “Las Vegas”, starts on 7th July. See the TV Update below, for further details.

“Deadwood” Season 3 also kick starts on Sky 1 next week. Again, more details below.

“Robbery Homicide Division” is another example of a short-lived US crime drama, that was cut-off by CBS, after just a few episodes. Although it lasted for 13 episodes in total, the show was forced onto another US channel, after the first 10 had aired, quickly killing-off its fan base and any chance of any more adventures. The show stars Tom Sizemore (“Heat”, “Strange Days”) and Klea Scott (“Millennium”, “Brooklyn South”) and was produced by the hit movie director Michael Mann, back in 2002! Similar to “Miami Vice” and “Crime Story”, in its use of gritty location-shoots, well-known popular music, and some of the best action scenes ever depicted on the small-screen, the show follows a team of detectives in a rough-and-ready police division, who are willing to break any and all of the rules, in order to bring down criminals, big and small, in order to make their world a little more pleasant. This is certainly an interesting addition to ITV4’s schedules!

Talking of Klea Scott, “Millennium”, the dark and disturbing horror/thriller show, that was spun-off from 1990’s hit series “The X-Files”, also makes its way to ITV. Despite the original Saturday night scheduling being dropped to random, middle-of-the-night graveyard timeslots, the show was actually very intelligent and different from anything seen in the UK before. Lance Henrickson stars as ex-FBI detective Frank Black who is a member of the Millennium Group, and investigates strange occurrences that take place all over the USA, from ritualistic murders, serial killings with religious fanatic overtones, and other apocryphal events. It was a dark, broody and very gothic series, that deserved a much better reception than it received in the UK. Thankfully, here’s the first chance for everyone to see all 3 seasons, uncut, uncensored, and in Widescreen (for Seasons 2 and 3 at least), on a non-subscription channel! Mark Saturday 29th July in your diaries, for the genuinely disturbing, but brilliant Pilot episode!

“Prison Break” has been the hit terrestrial TV import show of the year. Ending just a few weeks back on Five, UK Gold has now bought the satellite rights to the show, and start a complete Season 1 rerun from 9pm on Saturday 15th July, as part of a “Prison Break Weekend”! If you haven’t seen the show, you simply must watch it, because it really is absolutely cracking entertainment!

Season 2 of “Huff” starts on FX, on the 17th July. From the same channel that gave us “The Sopranos”, “Deadwood”, and “Dead Like Me”, this is the hit comedy drama about a psychiatrist trying desperately to hang on to his life, his sanity and his practice, whilst his family and mother seem to do everything in their power to break him. At times jaw-droppingly shocking, before doing a complete about-turn into the most bitingly hilarious of comedy, this is a well-crafted show, that deserves more viewers.

Fans of the Paramount Comedy Channel, have a new show to look forward too, this month. “Courting Alex” stars Jenna Elfman, (formerly of “Dharma And Greg”), as an uptight lawyer who devotes herself so much of her life to her job, that she’s forgotten to bother with her personal life. To make matters worse, her father is also her boss, (Dabney Coleman), and when Alex discovers the love of her life in the form of a bar-owner, Alex and her father are suddenly at war with each other. The show has been described as a more acidic version of “Ally McBeal”, but without the former series’ syrup-factor. Hopefully, it will be a hit, and gain plenty of critical and public attention.

If you were one of the many thousands who caught last-year’s “The Contender” with Sylvester Stallone, you’ll be pleased to hear that Season 2 has finally made it to the UK. Initially the series will start on ITV2 on 24th July, and then a week later, be repeated as a premiere on ITV1. Sixteen new aspiring fighters are put through their paces, for the chance to win $1 million dollars and to take part in a boxing match at Cesar’s Palace in Las Vegas.

As we head towards the end of July, the channel that gave us “Sleeper Cell”, now brings us another US hit drama, in the form of “E-Ring”. Benjamin Bratt (from “Law And Order” stars alongside Dennis Hopper, Kelly Rutherford, Joe Morton and Andrew McCarthy, in this tale of a former Special Forces officer, promoted from the battlefield and right into the heart of the Pentagon, where his boss (Hopper) and he are forced to make life-changing decisions that could affect nations around the world. Part “The West Wing”, and part “Navy NCIS”, this full-length first season, comes with numerous critical compliments and well-wishers.

Not content with any of the shows listed above? Well maybe these might be more to your liking. More4 has bought the rights to air the now-cancelled (but still worthwhile) political drama “Commander-In-Chief” (which is nearly at the end of its short run, on ABC1). Channel 4 has bought “Kidnapped”, which stars Timothy Hutton as the father of a kidnapped teenage son, who is forced to discover why he’s been snatched off the street for what appears to have been mistaken identity of another criminal youngster. “Studio 60 On The Sunset Strip” comes from “The West Wing” creator Aaron Sorkin, and is set amongst the behind-the-scenes escapades of a TV sitcom show’s cast and crew, with Matthew Perry (“Friends”) and Bradley Whitford (“The West Wing”), whilst “Brothers And Sisters” stars Calista Flockhart and Rachel Griffiths as bereaved siblings, trying to sort out their lives, after parental death. Lastly, we have comedy/drama “Betty The Ugly”! A show that stars Ashley Jensen (from “Extras”) and new US actress America Ferrera (not a made-up name!), as two women working on an upmarket US fashion magazine. Each of these are likely to start on More4, E4 and Channel 4, later on in the summer, or towards Autumn.

For the BBC, they’ve acquired “3 lbs” (or “Three Pounds”), starring Stanley Tucci as a neurosurgeon with deteriorating mental and physical health problems, who tries to solve various medical and criminal cases, plus “Falcon Beach” – another “The OC”, “One Tree Hill”, “Beverly Hills 90210” teen-drama, set amongst the sunny climbs of a Canadian coastal resort!


New Channel News
Yes, if you don’t think you already have enough channels to choose from, two more are coming your way, over the next few months, that are sure to set UK viewers eyes alight! Five will start the new channels, with “FiveUS” and “Five2”. The former, will allow Five to bring old and new US imports to the UK, on a specialised channel for the discerning viewer. It will also allow them to repeat (like E4 and More4), their main channel US imports, on a weekly basis, giving viewers another opportunity to catch-up with their favourites like “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation” and “Law And Order”. “Five2” will be a channel aimed at families, and will include a mixture of family dramas, news, lesser-covered sports, music, and discussion shows. No details have been set in stone, for either channels appearance, but both are likely to start airing on Sky Digital, in the Autumn!


Channel Changes
“The Horror Channel” has now changed its name to “Zone Horror”, and has a horrendously large new DOG, which looks truly nasty! The channel still airs on Sky EPG number 321.

“Movies 24” has now started broadcasting on Sky EPG number 329. Again, it has a hideously large white DOG, and until July 1st, is not actually airing 24 hours a day, as its name implies. However, amongst a lot of trashy, direct-to-video, US TV movies, ala “True Movies” and “True Movies 2”, there are some occasional gems. So it may be worth keeping your eyes peeled, on their schedules, just in case. As usual, if there are any specific titles that I think would be of interest, I’ll mention them, in my usual TV Updates.

“True Movies” and “True Movies 2” are still in the same channel positions on the Sky EPG, but have now been renamed to “TM” and “TM2” respectively, with a new, smaller, less noticeable DOG!

Inside The Actor’s Studio – 10:00-11:00am
An episode from the 10th Season, originally shown in 2004, with actress Diane Lane. The premise of each show is to take one cast or crew member, from the entire world of cinema, and to critically discuss their life, their work and what makes them who they are. This is not a chat show, but a real, intelligent in-depth analysis of a person’s chosen career in the movie industry. The series has been running for over 12 years now, and previous interviewees have included the likes of Tom Cruise, the cast of “Will And Grace”, Morgan Freeman, Jamie Foxx, Cameron Diaz, Salma Hayek, Kiefer Sutherland, Jennifer Connelly, James Gandolfini (and the cast of “The Sopranos”), William H. Macy, Clint Eastwood, Renee Zellwegger, Bette Midler, Martin Scorsese, Juliette Binoche, Steven Spielberg, George Lucas, Gwyneth Paltrow, Robert De Niro, John Hurt, Barbra Streisand, the cast of “The Simpsons”, and many, many, many more! Quite literally, you have the crème-de-la-crème of cinema and TV here! It’s an exceptional series that deserves far more exposure than it gets, but it’s Highly Recommended, if you want to find out more about some of your favourite stars. Episodes usually air most days, at 10am, 1pm and 7pm, but not every episode is repeated the same day… just to keep you paying attention! (The Performance Channel)

FILM: Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure (PG) – 5:30-7:05pm
Tim Burton’s wonderfully obscure fantasy film, is a gem of the weird and baroque material he creates. Here, Pee Wee (played by US comedian Paul Reubens), discovers that someone has stolen his beloved bicycle, and sets out to find out who has taken it, and more to the point, why! It sounds pathetic, but with Burton’s dark humour and nightmarish visions at work here, the film is far more suited to adults, than children. Ditto, for some of the risqué and adult humour, that runs through the script. (A few years back, Reubens was caught indulging himself in a US porno-theatre, forcing him to “kill-off” his Pee Wee character, because it was associated with children’s TV and films! You could say, he’s not unlike Krusty The Clown in “The Simpsons”!) Worth viewing, if you like off-kilter films, that take you down some very strange alleyways! Contains some mild violence, and has been edited for language. Also contains themes and images that are not suitable for younger viewers! Showing in Widescreen. (Five)

It’s part one of the two-part Series 2 finale, and one major character is exiting the show for good! Hopefully, after the rather mediocre quality of recent episodes, the final two episodes have been given a much-needed push in the script department! (BBC1)

NEW: Tales From The Crypt – 8:30-9:00pm
Okay, well, it’s nto really new, but it’s a complete run-through of this long-running horror anthology series, hosted by the evil animatronic puppet “The Cryptkeeper”. Just like “The Twilight Zone”, each story is a horror-themed opus, and has a host of guest stars, new and old. For obvious reasons, some of the episodes may contain adult themes, some bad language, and some material that may not be suitable for young audiences. Episodes air every day, at the same time, with no repeats. (Zone Horror – aka The Horror Channel)

** FILM: City On Fire (18) – 10:00pm-12:10am
An excellent action thriller from Hong Kong, about a gang of robbers, who think they may have been infiltrated by a police officer. If the plot sounds familiar, it’s because this was the film that Quentin Tarantino used to base “Reservoir Dogs” on (which is airing on Sunday night. See Sunday for details)! See the original, and then you be the judge as to which was the better version. Showing uncut, uncensored, and in Widescreen. In the original Mandarin audio, with English Subtitles. Contains strong violence, graphic bloodshed, and plenty of strong language. The movie is also repeated later on tonight at 1:40am. (ITV4)

NEW: Slings And Arrows – 10:00-10:45pm
Technically, this is a repeat showing, but it was buried so far in the original schedules, that I’d be surprised if anyone knew of its existence. Anyhow, this is a new-ish Canadian drama courtesy of the TMN Network in Canada (similar to HBO in the USA). This provocative drama stars Paul Gross, who most of you will know as Royal Canadian Mounted Policeman Benton Frasier from the TV show “Due South”! Gross plays Geoffrey Tenant, as he tries desperately to deal with the personal Hell, that are his work colleagues, in all their mad-cap craziness! Seven years after suffering an emotional breakdown during a theatrical performance, Tennant struggles to make ends meet managing the dilapidated “Theatre Sans Argent”. Alongside him, he’s got a boss trying to run “alternative” theatrical shows, to minimal audiences, and numerous other devotees and hangers-on, who are making his life a misery. The show won some awards in its home country, and ran for two six-episode seasons. Here, the show is being aired in one, complete 12-episode block. Contains some strong language, and occasional adult scenes. Each episode is repeated late on Sunday night, at 1:15am, with new episodes airing each Saturday night. (Artsworld)

NEW: Sci-Fi Quiz - 1:10-4:00am
I hope that this is not going to become a permanent fixture, but for what it’s worth, the UK Sci-Fi Channel are starting their own, late-night quiz programme, partly as a time-filler and also as a way to raise funds for buying new programming material! I guess it’s not too bad a way to do things, even if it does remove around 21 hours of programming time, each week. (Sci-Fi Channel)

NEW: Watching Ellie – 9:30-10:00am
All-new US comedy series, starring Julia-Louise Dreyfuss (from “Seinfeld”). No preview details available, I’m afraid, except that this is the Pilot Episode from Season 1. (LivingTV)

FILM: Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within (PG) – 6:05-8:00pm
Despite a critical and public mauling, this completely-CGI animated film based on the long-running computerised role-playing game of the same name, is a lot better than you might expect. It has its flaws, for sure, but if you can forgive the script’s overtly complex and convoluted central idea, it’s not a bad little film. Ming-Na, Alec Baldwin, Ving Rhames, Steve Buscemi and Donald Sutherland provide the voices for this enjoyable sci-fi thriller, as a team of humans are forced to find a way to return Earth back to the planet it once was, as ethereal phantoms try to ravage it and them! Contains some fantasy violence, and some mild bad language. Showing in Widescreen. (Five)

NEW: Out Of Practice – 7:30-8:00pm
Although I mentioned this last week, I thought it worth a second chance. Repeat of the Season 1 Pilot Episode, of the new US comedy/drama starring Henry Winkler and Stockard Channing as a divorced couple trying to make a life for one another, whilst tolerating their medical work together. NEW: 24 – 9:00-11:00pm
Tonight, it’s the final two episodes, airing back-to-back, and is Bauer going to be able to stop President Logan from starting a war between the USA and the Russians, or has the damage become irreparable?! Settle down, for the exciting two-hour finale! Repeated on Sky 2 on Monday night, from 11:30pm, and/or late on Monday night/early Tuesday morning, on Sky 1, between 2:20-4:00am! (Sky 1)

The Secret Policeman’s Ball – 9:00-10:00pm
First of three comedy revue shows, from the early 1980’s, with Rowan Atkinson and a whole host of British comedians, as they perform skits, songs and sketches before a live audience, with the aim of raising money for Amnesty International. Ground-breaking satire at the time, although a bit dated now. Yet, the material is still as funny as always. Contains adult material and strong language. “The Secret Policeman’s Other Ball” and “The Secret Policeman’s Third Ball” can be seen over the next two Sunday nights. (Artsworld)

FILM: Midnight Run (18) – 10:00pm-12:35am
Postponed from a few weeks back, this is the absolutely riotous action comedy, with Robert De Niro as a bounty-hunter out to catch one, final criminal, before leaving the game for good. When he sets off in search of “The Jackal” (actor Charles Grodin), little does he know that the man is wanted not only by his boss, but also another, equally-devious bounty-hunter (John Ashton), a Mafia crime boss (Dennis Farina), but also by the head of the FBI (Yaphet Kotto)! It’s relentlessly foul-nouthed, but it’s also one of the finest, and funniest action films made from the 1980’s! If you’ve never seen it, then this is an absolute must-see. Contains very strong language throughout, some occasionally strong violence, and some brief sexual material. Showing uncut and uncensored, and in Widescreen. Highly Recommended. Also repeated later on tonight, at 3:05am. (ITV4)

FILM: Reservoir Dogs (18) – 10:00-11:55pm
Tarantino’s first cinematic outing, and it’s a brilliantly audacious crime movie. A gang of bank robbers commit a heist, that goes spectacularly wrong, when they discover that they have been infiltrated by an undercover cop. Back at their hideout, the gang are forced to question who each of them claims to be. It’s unrelentingly violent, extremely foul-mouthed, and even borderline misogynistic, but it’s also very clever too, with style to die for! If you can handle the language and violence, this is worth a watch. And, despite what you may think, the “ear-slicing” scene is never actually shown in detail! Showing uncut and uncensored, in Widescreen. (Sky 2)

Panorama – 10:15-11:05pm
This particular episode of the long-running BBC documentary and politics show, is entitled “The Money Trap: How The Banks Lure You Into Debt”, and investigates how almost every major high-street bank uses various techniques, to lure its customers – young and old – into debt, in various ways, including collusion amongst rival banks! From extending your overdraft, obtaining a second mortgage, through to small-print fees and charges designed to challenge even the most literate of customers, Sally Magnusson goes undercover to investigate, and uncovers what many of us will be shocked by. Highly Recommended viewing for everyone! (BBC1)


Monday 3rd
NEW: Buck Rogers In The 25th Century – 10:00-11:00am
Well, it’s not really new, but it’s been a long time since it was last seen in the UK, so it’s worth mentioning here. This is the classic 1970’s TV series starring Gil Gerard as the US astronaut who is catapulted from his own time, whilst in suspended animation, 500 years into the future. There, he finds himself with various people and creatures, and has to try to find a way to survive and assimilate into his new “life”. It’s corny, it’s silly, and the plots are pretty cheesy also, but there’s something enjoyably naff about the whole show, that just about makes it worth a viewing. Today sees the first half of the Pilot Movie episode “Awakening”. Each episode airs at 10am weekdays, with a same-day repeat, at 7pm. (Bravo)

NEW: (Our Life In…) Everwood – 2:00-3:00pm
After the daytime success last year of Season 1 of this popular US drama, ITV have quickly scheduled the complete run of Season 2, in the same weekday time-slot. Episodes will air every weekday, for the next five weeks. (ITV1)

The Darling Buds Of May – 4:00-5:00pm
Weekday repeat run of the entire series of this much-loved (if slightly cheesy) period drama, set on a rural farm. David Jason stars as Pa Larkin, with his daughter played by (at the time) newcomer Catherine Zeta Jones! Episodes air every weekday, in the same time-slot. (ITV1)

FILM: The Kids Are Alright (15) – 9:00-11:10pm
The seminal 1979 documentary chronicling the life of the band “The Who”, including interviews, concert footage and guest stars. Contains strong language. Showing uncut and uncensored, and in Widescreen. Followed by the “Live In Boston” concert. (ITV4)

FILM: Twister (PG) – 9:30-11:35pm
This is an excellent adventure about a husband and wife team, on the verge of divorce, who are willing to put their lives in danger, as they try to record the power of tornados in the USA. The special effects are fantastic, and the film is very good too. But what makes this specific screening worth watching/recording, is the fact it is the full, original and uncut US cinema version, and not the cut UK version we saw in cinemas and on DVD – hence the late-night scheduling! There’s only a tiny bit of extra material, comprising about a minute or two of footage, but still… Contains some bad language, some mild violence, and brief themes of a mature nature. Showing uncut and in Widescreen. Repeated on Thursday night at 10:00pm, on Sky 2. (Sky 1)

NEW: The Pervert’s Guide To Cinema – 10:00-11:05pm
This is not what you think, at all! Polish philosopher and psychoanalyst Slavoj Zizek, presents a three-part investigation into the hidden language of films, film-makers and film-making, from the Marx Brothers and Hitchcock to modern-day auteurs like Spielberg, Coppola and Terence Malick. Episodes 2 and 3 can be seen tomorrow and Wednesday night, at the same times. Repeated at 1:30am each night, as well. May contain adult scenes, and some bad language. (More4)

I have no idea what “sult” means, but it is likely to be some kind of music performance and/or chat show. This particular episode has Kirsty MacColl and Sinead O’Connor in it. Should be interesting. (Performance Channel)

The squad are back, as we continue through Season 11, and thankfully, each episode is being shown twice per night – at approximately 11pm and then at 2:30am. And it’s still as fantastic a show as ever! (More4)

Dead Like Me – 4:00-5:10am
Late-night repeat for this cult, short-lived US supernatural drama about a teenage girl (Ellen Muth), who is killed in an accident, and becomes a sort of Grim-Reaper, with a distinctly darkly take on the issue of death! From the Showtime stable, (the original home to “Stargate SG-1”, “Poltergeist: The Legacy”, and “The Outer Limits”), this show was pulled after two Seasons, despite vocal protesting from fans around the world. All 29 episodes will be airing, together, over the next few weeks, on a nightly basis. The time slot will also change, and sometimes two episodes may air. As such, keep an eye on your EPG guide, for full details. Contains occasional strong language, and some material that is unsuitable for younger teenagers. Showing uncut and in Widescreen. Episodes also repeated the following night, around Midnight, on Sky 2 as well – just in case you miss any of them. Tonight sees the first half of the two-hour Pilot episode. (Sky 1)


Tuesday 4th
CSI: Crime Scene Investigation – 9:00-10:00pm
We’re coming up to the end of Season 6, and it’s another two-part special. A CSI team-member is shot by an armed man, who is accused of murdering his boss, a co-worker and his own wife. When the murderer is pursued through one of the Las Vegas casinos, he barricades himself in a room, but not before taking a hostage for bargaining his way out of his situation. Hopefully, this will match or excel last year’s Season 5 Tarantino finale. Part 2 can be seen next Tuesday evening, at the same time. And thank goodness, Nick has got rid of the crummy moutache and dodgy new haircut, he had earlier on in Season 6! Didn’t it look awful?! (Five)


Wednesday 5th
FILM: Beverly Hills Cop (15) – 9:05pm, 10:05pm, or 11:05pm
Three chances to see one of the finest action comedies made, and to see a young Eddie Murphy in one of his funniest moments. I don’t think I need to discuss the plot, and I’m sure I needn’t mention the excellent music score either, by Harold Faltermeyer. Just sit back, enjoy, and let this cracking film perform its magic, right from the first sequence. Contains strong language, violence and some other mature material, that may be unsuitable for younger teenagers. Showing uncut. (Start times for Paramount 2, Paramount 1, or Paramount 1 +1 respectively)


Thursday 6th
Avengers Evening – 7:10-9:00pm
Just two shows make-up this brief evening, devoted to the much loved 1960’s and 70s action drama. An episode airs at 7:10pm, followed by a documentary at 8:30pm. No other details available. The episode is repeated tomorrow night at Midnight, whilst the documentary is repeated at 11:30pm tonight. (BBC4)

NEW: Deadwood – 10:00-11:00pm
Season 3 kicks off, for this controversial, adult and uncompromisingly raw HBO western drama, starring Ian McShane, Brad Dourif, Molly Parker and Robin Weigart. For some reason, only the first six episodes have currently been scheduled. This is probably because – at the time of writing this – the show is On Hiatus in the USA. This could mean that “Deadwood” fans in the UK, may end up having to watch the third season in two blocks, each of six episodes. As always, this show is full of obscene language, and is absolutely for adults only! Showing uncut and in Widescreen. (Sky 1)

A repeat of a documentary shown earlier this year, but one that is worth watching, and even more poignant due to tomorrow being the first anniversary since the terrible events took place. In the summer of 2005, over a period of nine days, London and the UK went through the highest of highs, with the shock win over Paris, to host the 2012 Olympics, and the Live8 concert. Just 24 hours later, however, and the capital turned into a living hell, after Islamic terrorists detonated several bombs, crippling the city centre, and tearing the heart out of the joyous day before. This show looks at those events. Contains footage and material that may be disturbing, as well as some strong language and distressing scenes. (BBC2)

The short-lived sci-fi fantasy drama series, is being given a much-needed complete Season 1 repeat, starting tonight, with the first two episodes (of 15), airing back-to-back. When a gigantic marine creature is discovered, one woman sets out to find what the lifeform is. Her task is hampered, though, as both the local law-enforcement and the FBI are trying to block any attempts at discussing the strange visitor, and confiscating evidence. Is this a cover-up, or is something more sinister about to be unleashed on this town? A fun and intelligent twist on the standard kind of alien-invastion shows, crossing “seaQuest DSV” with “Alien” and a dash of “ET” to the proceedings. There’s still no clue as to whether or not a Season 2 will ever be given the go-ahead, and reports from the US, last stated that the US branch of the Sci-Fi Channel may have been willing to plump part of the funding to conclude the series properly. But, to date, nothing official or concrete has been decided. So, for the time being, enjoy this show, whilst you can. (ITV2)

NEW: Rescue Me – 9:00-10:00pm
Well, for Freeview fans, this is new. For everyone else, it’s a repeat, but a damn good one. US acerbic stand-up comedian Denis Leary created this US import drama, about an embittered fireman who – post September 11th – is trying to make his way in his life, after loosing several members of his crew, in the New York terrorist attacks. Along the way, he is forced to endure a messy divorce, a father who isn’t all there, friends who are only interested in sex, and his own rebellious demons with alcohol! It’s politically incorrect, and there’s some very suspect sexism in it, but if you can handle that, (or at least disregard it as “typical neanderthal men”), then it’s very funny, and cleverly written, with a great theme tune too. Contains strong language, adult themes, adult material, and scenes that some may find inappropriate. Showing uncut and in Widescreen. (Sky 3)

NEW: Las Vegas – 9:00-10:00pm
The third Season of the enjoyable crime action show, returns, with a new character taking over the casino! The only problem, is that the original staff are fighting over whether to leave, or to stick things through with the new boss, and the decision-making starts getting very personal indeed. (Sky 1)

NEW: The Shield – 11:00pm-Midnight
Season 5 gets off to a rollickingly good start, with the return of Detective Mackey and Co to our screens, in the first of 11 episodes. There’s also a couple of new faces in town, who are likely to start livening things-up for everyone! As racial tension grows between the gangs, the citizens and the police of Los Angeles, after last Season’s problematic heavy tactics by Captain Rawlings, (Glenn Close), the Strike Team try desperately to quell the tit-for-tat killing sprees that spring-up everywhere, and Vic is forced to run things on his own, with no leader to question him, his team, or the squad’s actions! Meanwhile, Aceveda, Rawlings and the rest of the staff at The Barn, are also dealing with personal problems, when Internal Affairs starts to dig into everyone’s backgrounds, much to the chagrin of Vic, Claudette, Danny, Dutch and Shane! Contains violence and some strong language. Showing uncut and in Widescreen. (Five)

Fancy something easy to enjoy, but still slightly off-beat? Need a good laugh? Well, Bravo may have the answer for you, in their new, two-hour post-pub selection of evening viewing. Every Friday night, throughout the summer, Bravo are introducing a new animated line-up to their Friday’s, for adults who want something with a bit more gravitas. The line-up, is as follows:

Just a quick addendum, to yesterday’s giant TV Update for you. From Saturday 8th July, BBC2 starts what appears to be a new, complete rerun of both the original “Star Trek” series, and “Star Trek: The Next Generation”!

Those of you who have recently followed the Sci-Fi Channel showings of the original “Star Trek”, you will have noted a lot of annoyingly large, animated DOG’s, promoting other shows (and in some case, “Star Trek” itself!). Also, they did not air the original Pilot Episode, “The Cage”). However, BBC2 is doing just that!

“Star Trek: The Original Series - The Cage” starts at 2:55-4:00pm, followed straight-after by “Star Trek: The Next Generation”, Season 1, Episode 1 – “Encounter At Farpoint” (Parts 1 and 2 together), between 4:00-5:30pm. Episodes for both shows should then continue, at roughly the same time, every Saturday afternoon, for the next couple of years (approximately)! The best thing of all, though, is that BBC2 showings will be uncut, uncensored, uninterrupted, and totally DOG-free!

Yes, that last "House" episode was brilliant. I wasn't sure whether I was hallucinating there were so many twists in the storyline, and gore too! It's bad news that we have to wait until February 2007 for Series 3. I've been watching the old repeats on Sci-Fi channel so I will just have to keep watching the others until then.

Glad to hear that you have contacted Artsworld regarding their film aspects. Hopefully they'll repeat these again now, correctly shown.

I am so thrilled that "Millenium" is being shown. Really enjoyed that series although I missed several of them. This will make up for "House" and "Medium" disappearing from our screens.

Film Four is now officially going free-to-air from 3pm on 23rd July 2006! You'll notice that C4, E4 and More4 are airing a lot of rubbish cryptic ads, which last for less than 10 seconds each, with a weird scene that doesn't make any sense at all, followed by "23-07-06" on a red background. It's their idea of a clever "promo" advert! Sadly, it's a crap one. Thank goodness, you all have me, eh?!

I just wanted to make a brief mention of the following news: for those of you who don't already know, it is with deep regret that I have to inform you all, that long-time AV Forum member "DaveP" passed away, on June 22nd, after a heart-attack. The condolences thread is here, for all tributes and memories of the great man. And, although it may seem trivial in the grand scheme of things, I'd like to dedicate my next TV Update to DaveP and all of his family and friends. The update will be online on Saturday.

Please take a moment out of your day to visit the aforementioned thread. It's heartening to see so many people respond to something so sad, in such a short time.

Okay – a bit of a confession, from me: I’m afraid this update’s going to be a tad below my usual standard. Simply put, I’ve just not had the time to go through this week’s TV listings, in the usual detail, and as such, the resultant update’s going to look a little – let’s just say – a little less than great. I can only apologise to you all, but hope that you can forgive me this once.

Also, for those of you who don’t already know, this update is being dedicated to the memory of AV Forum’s member “DaveP”, who sadly passed away on the 22nd July 2006, from a heart attack. He leaves behind his wife, Cheryl, and his children too. Our hearts and prayers go out to his family and relatives, during this sad time. DaveP – I hope you’ll enjoy the AV kit that’s waiting for you, up in Heaven! You’ll be much missed by us all.

Similar in nature, but not as clever as its cinematic sister, it’s enjoyable, if a tad silly. Contains strong language, violence and other adult scenes. The series continues each Saturday night, at the same time. (Men And Motors)

FILMS: Lethal Weapon Trilogy (18) – 9:00pm-3:25am
Fancy seeing the brilliant action comedy trilogy, back-to-back, uncut and uncensored, and in the correct Widescreen ratios? Want to see some of the material the BBFC still doesn’t want you to see, even now in 2006? TCM gives you the chance to see the films in one night. Danny Glover and Mel Gibson play the detective duo, who get into more and more scrapes, as they desperately try to save LA from sadistic crime-lords, a South African dictator and a man out for revenge. Hilarious and with some superb action scenes. Highly Recommended. Showing uncut and uncensored. Contains strong and prolonged violent scenes, very strong language throughout and some occasionally harrowing scenes. (TCM – Turner Classic Movies)

FILM: Night Of The Living Dead (18) – 10:00-11:40pm
Not the George A Romero original, but an enjoyably twisted modern-day update, made in 1990, starring Tony Todd and Patricia Tallman. When the dead start returning to life, it’s down to a few locals to try and save Pittsburgh from being taken over by zombies. It’s gory, it’s violent, and with a vicious streak in humour, this is actually far better than it should have been. Contains some strong language, and gore-a-go-go! Showing uncut. (Sci-Fi Channel)

FILM: Glastonbury (15) – 10:30pm-12:45am
This recently completed, 2006 documentary movie by Brit-director Julien Temple, looking at 35 years of this world famous music festival, gets a World Premiere, courtesy of the BBC. Contains very explicit language throughout, despite the low certificate. Showing uncut and uncensored, in Widescreen. (BBC2)

The Curse Of Superman – 10:00-11:05pm
Typical Channel 4 documentary, investigating the seedy side of the making of a hit-movie, and exposing alleged “afflictions” that happened to cast and crew members of the 1978 hit comic-based movie. Take with a pinch of salt! Expect some strong language. (Channel 4)

FILM: Sex – The Annabel Chong Story (18) – 11:05pm-12:50am
If you ever thought that pornography was acceptable, and that the women involved in the industry take part by choice, without any coercion, this shockingly frank film will simply destroy that myth forever! US/Chinese porn actress Annabel Chong gained notoriety in 1995, after having sex with 251 men in just ten hours, in order to become famous. With interviews from Chong herself, male porn star/producer Ron Jeremy, and many of the men involved in the “record-setting” event, reveal that porn is never going to rid itself of its sordid history, despite recent clean-ups and law changes. This is a strictly adults-only documentary, that contains graphic sexual material that is likely to offend many people, as well as unrestrained and explicit language. The version showing has had to be briefly cut, because it contains material that is deemed too offensive for British television. As such, it’s not recommended for the easily offended, but if you can handle the material, it’s one hell of an insight into an industry most of us have only heard about. Showing in Widescreen. (Channel 4)

Schedule Change: The OC – 2:25-4:25pm
Due to Channel 4’s own incompetence, (where they stupidly managed to air the same episode twice, in two weeks), there’s a double-episode special to conclude the series, with the final two episodes being aired together. Cut to remove scenes of violence and drug usage! (Channel 4)

FILM: The Hulk (12) – 2:25-5:00pm
Ang Lee’s mediocre remake of the scientist who turns himself into a giant green monster, whenever he becomes angry. Lots of CGI effects, but not much story, and almost no characters to care about or become interested in. This showing is cut to remove some of the stronger violent scenes, and to tone down the minor bad language. The film is repeated at 9:00pm tonight, uncut and uncensored. (ITV2)

Look Up In The Sky: The Amazing Story Of Superman – 2:30-4:25pm
All-new, two-hour documentary about “Superman”, from his initial comic-book background, via the George Reeve movie shorts, the movies, “Superboy”, “Lois And Clarke”, and “Smallville”. Narrated by award-winning actor Kevin Spacey! (Five)

NEW: Charmed – 4:25-5:25pm
The final series, Season 8, finally makes it to UK terrestrial TV, but on a different channel, and with edits for violent and scary content. Oh, and there’s DOG’s a plenty, and a crappy time-slot too! Enjoy it whilst you can, unless you are happy to wait for the DVD release towards the end of this year! (Channel 4)

NEW: Ghost Whisperer – 8:00-9:00pm
All-new US supernatural drama, with Jennifer Love Hewitt as Melinda Gordon – a woman who has the ability to see and communicate with dead people. This is the Pilto Episode. Reasonable reviews from the USA, both critically and from viewers. Episode 2 is on Tuesday at 9pm, and the show continues every Tuesday thereafter. (E4)

NEW: Kylie: The Interview – 9:00-10:00pm
World-exclusive interview from Sky, with the Australian pop singer and actress, who was recently diagnosed with Breast Cancer. The interview covers the event, from the original diagnosis, right through to a few weeks back, when she was given a clean bill of health. Should hopefully be a worthwhile hour of TV. (Sky 1)

Chris Rock: Never Scared – 10:00-11:35pm
Concert-film of black US comedian Chris Rock, as he scrutinises his life, his childhood, his place as a role-model for modern American youth, and his love-hate relationship with the rich and famous. Contains explicit adult language throughout, and racial material that some may find offensive. See Thursday night’s listings, for more Chris Rock material. (Paramount Comedy Channel)

Alias – 10:00pm-Midnight
The final two episodes, from the final ever series, as Sydney, Jack and Vaughn race to stop Sloan from putting his deadly plan into action, and before Rimbaldi’s own ideas are put into terrifying and lethal operation. Both episodes repeated at 1am tonight. (Bravo)

FILM: Asterix The Gaul (U) – 10:30-11:35am
First of two animated movies, based on the Rene Goscinny and Alberto Uderzo comic-books. Astreix, Getafix and the other Gauls, discover they can beat the Roman’s with the help of some very Magic Potion. As always, though, things don’t go quite the way they had planned. French language, dubbed into English. One f of the many film sequels, “The Twelve Tasks Of Asterix”, can be seen tomorrow morning, at 10:30am. Both films are great for children and adults alike. Highly Recommended, if you fancy something a little different. (BBC2)

NEW: Huff – 10:00-11:10pm
Season 2 of the excellent, dark and deeply acidic comedy drama, about Dr Craig Huffstedt and his family, as he tries to make his way through life, whilst dealing with his patients and families psychological neuroses. It’s pitch-black adult comedy, but it’s very, very funny: a mixture of “The Sopranos” and “Frasier”! Contains strong language and adult material. (FX)

FILM: Strange Days (18) – 10:30pm-1:10am
Acclaimed and controversial US sci-fi thriller, from James Cameron and Kathryn Bigelow, in the tale of a modern-day futuristic Earth, that has abused technology, to create entertainment that allows people to relive other people’s own experiences, through specialist digital recordings. Set at the end of 1999, Ralph Fiennes and Angela Bassett are the two leads, (in a giant list of who’s who of Hollywood stars), who are forced into an uncomfortable corner, when one of the recordings proves to be a little too-close for comfort. A shocking and haunting portrayal of the misuse of technology, for our own sick entertainment, and how such abuse can only lead us down a very dark alleyway! This is the full, uncut US theatrical version, that includes material cut by the BBFC for cinema and home viewing, here in the UK. The film contains very strong language, strong violence, one scene of strong sexualised violence (which is actually a pivotal sequence in the film), gore, distressing images, and scenes that some viewers may find disturbing! A truly powerhouse film, that showcases why sci-fi films can still be some of the most entertaining and thought-provoking material to be shown in cinemas! Showing uncut and in Widescreen. Repeated on Tuesday night, on Sky 2, at 10:30pm. (Sky 1).

NEW: Animal Rescue – 10:35-11:05pm
Late-night strand of the popular animal documentary show. Hear how the RSPCA team tackle and cope, with many of the more harrowing stories of animal injuries and abuse, that are unsuitable for the early-evening shows. Contains disturbing and graphic material, that many will find deeply distressing. The five-part series continues each Monday night. Timeslot may vary for some BBC regions. Horatio Caine and Co, are back once more, in the start of the brand new episodes that make up Season 4. It’s glossy and shallow crime drama, in comparison to “CSI” and “CSI: NY”, but it’s still a fun diversion. This series will also include the “Miami” / “New York” crossover special, that form Episode 7’s two-hour special heldover from “CSI: NY’s” recent run on Saturday nights! (Five)

FILM: Goldfinger (PG) – 9:00-11:10pm
The first of a short run of classic Bond movies, on ITV4, in the lead up to the amazing end-of-month release of the brand-new, digitally remastered, restored and completely uncut DVD releases, of all the films to-date, in the UK! (ITV4)

NEW: Grumpy Old Holidays – 10:00-10:30pm
Spin-off series, looking at the good and bad sides of the standard British “holiday”, with comments from the men and women of the previous “Grumpy Old…” series. Contains some strong language. (BBC2)

** Film Four Channels Cease Broadcasting Today! **
Viewers and subscribers to “FilmFour” should note that today is the final day of broadcasting for all of the “FilmFour” channels. All transmission cease tomorrow morning, at 6am. I’d recommend that subscribers confirm with their digital TV suppliers, that they will not be charged any more from tonight, for these channels. “Film4”, (yes, it’s been pointlessly rebranded! ), will rescommence broadcasting from 3pm on Sunday 23rd July, on all digital platforms, completely free-of-charge! More details will follow, in the next few days, from me!

FILM: Airplane! (PG) – 7:15-9:00pm
I doubt I need to introduce this seminal and outrageously funny comedy movie. So let me just say this: if you’ve seen it already, it’s worth watching again. And, if you’ve never seen it before, watch this movie without fail! An absolute gem! One of a very few films, that improves upon repeated viewings. Contains some risqué material, and mild bad language. Showing uncut and in Widescreen. (Five)

NEW: Are We Being Served – 7:30-8:00pm
Brand-new consumer show, from the “Watchdog” team, investigating just how bad Customer Service has become in the UK. From high street shops, to online stores, via so-called telephone helplines and customer service lines from the many big companies based in the UK (BT, NTL, Sky, etc!), the team go on the lookout for those who genuinely help, and those who seem to want to be rid of you! Should prove to be enjoyable! This is the first of five, weekly episodes. Tonight, the team look at the world of the retail industry in Britain, from your corner shop, to the big-name manufacturers who command their presence from gigantic warehouses in retail parks all over the country. No specific details yet, but news has come through, that PC World and Tesco both feature in tonight’s show, for being naughty! (BBC1)

If your school days were the happiest days of your life, then this six-part comedy documentary show, may irritate you. For everyone else, school was a war-zone, in many different ways. Fights with your teachers, your friends, your family, your parents. Yes, school definitely did NOT prepare you for life as a grown-up. So watch, reminisce and laugh out loud, as celebrities talk about their school-lives: “Chinny Reckon”, silent-but-deadly farting, school assemblies, the morning milk break, and many other moments are brought back into the spotlight. FILM: Mad Max (18) – 11:45pm-1:25am
The superb futuristic action movie, from 1979, gets a much welcome repeat. Mel Gibson plays Max Rockatansky, an Australian police-officer who is forced to endure endless lawlessness on the roads, after society collapses and urban decay sets in. With gangs, criminals and low-lifes roaming the highways, the local police have a desperate struggle on their hands, to keep the roads safe for regular people. But when a tragic accident occurs, Max decides that enough is enough, and decides to take the law into his own hands, and to set an example to every road-user that they’ll never forget… and never return from! A genre-defining movie, that works on many levels, be it as a sci-fi film, a thriller, and as a cautionary tale of how the future may end-up. For a film made over 25 years ago, the lawlessness depicted certainly resembles how society is now, albeit not in quite such a desperate situation. A classic film, and another Highly Recommended selection from me. Contains strong language, some strong violence, and a couple of scenes that will make you squirm. Showing uncut and in Widescreen. I was unaware that "ReGenesis" had been renewed. I was under the impression it had been cancelled, hence my use of the term "short-lived". Thanks for the info, though. Also, I know what you mean about "Ellery Queen" and "Big Apple". I suspect that BBC2 are using "EQ" purely as a time-filler, ala "Monk" and several other US shows that they air on Saturday and Sunday afternoons. Hopefully, both series will start to get back into a regular schedule.

Some TV News for you all:

1) HBO and BBC's historical drama "Rome" will get a second season, but has now been cancelled in full. This means another 8-12 episodes will be made, but that will be all. The main reason, is down to costs - Season 2 is costing $125 million US dollars - 25% more than Season 1! Yikes!

2) "Huff" the excellent, if controversial drama series, currently airing on FX, has also been given the boot in the US, and Season 2 will now be the last we will see.

3) Five's new spin-off satellite TV channel "Five US" will launch later this year, probably in September or October! The bonus good news, is that not only will Five be able to show older US dramas from their own catalogue of material (e.g. Law And Order, CSI, The Shield, et al), but they will also air new episodes of these shows a month or two prior to them being given their terrestrial premiere on Five. On top of this, Five have also garnered the rights to air all three of the current "CSI" shows, plus all previous episodes, on the new channel!

4) "The Closer" (originally aired on C4, but moved to More4), has been given a Third Season! Although the show failed to ignite viewers in the UK, its popularity has remained favourable in the USA.

5) "NYPD Blue" fans will be extremely disappointed, nigh apoplectic, to hear, that More4 are delaying the start of Season 12 of the hit US police show! Currently part-way through Season 11, at the end of the run, there will be a temporary hiatus (but of unknown length) for the show, and the 11pm and 2am timeslots will be filled with repeats of Season 1 of "The Closer" instead. More details on this, as I get them.

Good Afternoon, Everyone!

How are you all?! I hope everyone’s been able to cope with the extremely hot weather we’ve experienced over the past week or so, and that no one’s had to endure the nasty combination of sunburn and Calamine Lotion!

Well, this TV Update is the final one for the month of July, and also the final one for the time being. The next major, proper TV Update will be appearing on the AV Forums website, late in August or early in September 2006, and will include details of what to look forward too as we head into the Autumn, and the new TV schedules start to make an appearance. You may (or may not) be glad to know, that I won’t be disappearing on you all for the entire duration of the summer. I will continue to post information on new shows as well as any pertinent TV news that may be worth sharing.

But for now, I’m going to take a long and much-needed break from these fortnightly updates, and just relax for a bit. I’m currently working on something important, that may come to fruition in September, which is important to my education/career, so I kind of need to devote some time to that. Plus, my PC’s keyboard could do with taking a rest from typing all this stuff up, each fortnight.

More to the point, I need to take time-off from the updates. Heck, if I’m really lucky, I may even try and catch-up on some of the stuff I’ve recommended, and recorded to you folks, for myself! For now, though, take care, and I’ll see you all back here, in a few weeks time.


Saturday 22nd
Star Trek: The Next Generation – 1:50-2:35pm
Season 1 episode, that caused a lot of controversy, for its distinct lack of political correctness, even in 1987. “Code Of Honor” deals with Lieutenant Commander Tasha Yar (Denise Crosby) as she is forced into a life-or-death scenario, when she has to take part in a dangerous duel. Worth watching, even if you aren’t a Star Trek fan, purely for the controversial nature of the episode. (BBC2)

FILM: Clockwise (PG) – 2:10-4:00pm
Dated but delightfully sly comedy with John Cleese as headmaster Brian Stimpson. Stimpson’s life is ruled by punctuality, and that of others. But when a miscommunication causes him to miss a train heading to the University Of Norwich for an important meeting, his life turns into a complete mess, not withstanding accepting a ride from a female pupil, a lie with his wife, and a bunch of slightly dotty old women, who also take their toll on his exceptionally bad day. Cleese practically repeats his Basil Fawlty role here, but it’s just distinct enough to win viewers over, and not require too many negative comparisons. Alison Steadman, Penelope Wilton and a whole host of British bit-part actors co-star, in this funny afternoon film, that’s worth acquainting yourself with. Contains occasional minor bad language, and some mild scenes of drug usage. Showing uncut and in Widescreen. Highly Recommended. (ITV1)

NEW: Prehistoric Park – 6:50-7:50pm
Never let it be said, that ITV isn’t a producer of original and innovative British television! So here’s their new, primetime, CGI-infested documentary series about the life of dinosaurs, narrated by David Jason! Only watch, if you have too. Otherwise, rent or buy the BBC’s superior version from about 10 years ago, “Walking With Dinosaurs”. A shameless cash-in and rip-off! Avoid! (ITV1)

NCIS Double-bill – 7:05-9:05pm
Please note the earlier than usual starting time! Episodes 17 and 18 of Season 1 are airing back-to-back tonight, continuing on from last-week’s storyline, as the hunt for the Russian hostage-taker intensifies. (Five)

NEW: The L Word – 10:00-11:00pm
All-new Season 3 episodes of this intelligent, funny and occasionally acidic US drama about a group of gay women. Despite the subject, it’s not as sleazy or crass as people seem to think it is, and if you enjoy intelligent but frank adult drama, then this is worth watching. Contains some scenes of a provocative and occasionally sexually-explicit nature. I wish Five or the BBC would buy the terrestrial rights to this show! (LivingTV)

50 Films To See Before You Die – 10:05pm-1:20am
Prior to the relaunch of “Film4” tomorrow evening, Channel 4 offers-up another countdown-style TV show, listing 50 must-see films. This sounds quite good, but when the contributors to this show are of the likes of Karen Krizanovich (agony aunt for sex problems), Jason Solomon (tabloid newspaper hack), and Channel 4 executive Tessa Ross and C4 director Menhaj Huda, you have to wonder if this isn’t simply three-and-a-quarter-hours of primetime advertising?! Contains strong language, violent and sexual material, hence the post-10pm timeslot. (Channel 4)

FILM: Tromeo And Juliet (18) – 12:50-2:50am
Late-night showing of this cult classic re-interpretation of the famous Shakespeare movie, courtesy of US independent schlock-horror film company, Troma Movies! Ever wondered what the Bard’s romantic opus might look like, if it was modernised, and lots of sex and violence was added?! Well, here’s the result, and it’s pretty damn funny, if you don’t mind seeing some very, very bad acting, and corny jokes left, right and centre. Contains strong language, violence, sex and other adult material. Showing uncut. (Zone Horror – the new name for The Horror Channel!)


Sunday 23rd
NEW: Smallville – 3:20-4:20pm
For terrestrial fans, here’s the long delayed start of Season 4, from 2004. Expect plenty of cuts to render the show suitable for the young ‘un’s, and DOG’s ahoy! (Channel 4)

NEW: Miami Vice – 6:00-7:00pm
If you never caught the original BBC transmissions from the mid-1980’s, or the old Granada Men And Motors repeats, here’s a chance to catch this enjoyable action drama starring Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas as detectives Sonny Crockett and Ricardo Tubbs. Tonight is the first half of the Pilot Episode Movie “Brother’s Keeper”, as Crockett and Tubbs go in search of a drugs baron, who manages to constantly evade their capture. Hopefully, the series will be shown uncut, despite the early-evening time-slot, and the fact that the BBFC still certificated several Season 1 episodes as “18”, and thus suitable for adults only! Alternatively, let’s hope that ITV air the more adult episodes, later at night instead, where they can be shown uncut. An interesting and provocative addition to Sunday evening TV scheduling, especially as its up against the BBC’s “Songs Of Praise”! (ITV4)

How I Met Your Mother – 7:35-8:00pm
Return of the US comedy, that’s much better than anticipated, after its rest whilst the World Cup was on. (BBC2)

NEW: The Hades Factor – 9:00-10:00pm
First of a four-part US mini-series, based on the Robert Ludlum bestselling novel. Stephen Dorff and Mira Sorvino star, as a medical investigation team investigate the spread of a vicious new mystery virus, that has started to kill-off parts of the US population, in a rather unpleasant way. Anjelica Huston and Sophia Myles co-star. Episodes can be seen each Sunday, until the end of next month. Contains some occasional scenes that viewers may find uncomforting. Showing uncut and in Widescreen, and in Hi-Def! (Sky 1)

NEW: Film4 Relaunch Night – 9:00pm onwards
Tonight sees the start of the relaunch of Film4. From tonight, all film fans can see the channel’s ouput, free-of-charge, irrespective of whether you have Sky, cable or Freeview. (Your digibox may need to be retuned, to locate the Film4 channels, if you have Freeview!) For the first evening’s output, we get “Lost In Translation” (15), followed by “Sexy Beast” (18) and then “Infernal Affairs” (15). I’ve already posted the first few days schedules, a few posts above this one. Not the best of schedules by any means, but hopefully this will improve. Film4 will transmit each day from 3pm, to 3am. Films will hopefully be shown in their correct Widescreen ratios, and uncut. But, this won’t always be the case… After all, this is Channel 4 we’re talking about: a channel whose middle name should be “incompetence”, in my opinion, because of their poor track record. Oh, and films will have ad-breaks in them, and will probably be DOG’d as well. Let’s just hope that care has been taken, to present the films in their best possible prints, otherwise there’ll be a lot of angry movie fans contacting Channel 4 tomorrow morning! On a side-note, according to OFCOM’s own guidelines, there are not supposed to be adverts any more frequently than every 40-45 minutes! Let’s see how long it takes for this rule to be broken! (Film4)

FILM: Brazil (15) – 10:00pm-12:15am
This is the 132-minute, original US version, with the darker but more impressive ending, that US audiences didn’t get on its initial release! Jonathan Pryce, Kim Greist, Robert DeNiro and a whole load of all-star cast members bring to life Terry Giliams innovative sci-fi fantasy movie, about one man’s attempt to break free from the incompetent state of bureaucracy that surrounds him, but finds himself falling foul of the very same system he loathes so much. At turns provocative, hilarious, very dark, but always insightful. Contains some bad language, and occasional scenes that might be distasteful. Showing uncut and in Widescreen. (BBC4)

FILM: Amelie (15) – 10:40pm-12:55am
Award-winning French romantic comedy about a young lady whose only aim in life is to make others happy, but seeks only one thing for herself - love. Personally speaking, I didn’t think that highly of this film, but the evocative music score by Yann Tiernan is spellbinding. Definitely a film that you’ll either love or loathe. Showing uncut and in Widescreen. In French, with English subtitles. (More4)

Returns from its temporary hiatus, to Monday nights. Late night repeat, tonight at around 2:30am. (ITV4)

NEW: Courting Alex – 9:00-10:05pm
First two episodes of a new, but short-lived US comedy starring Jenna Elfman, as Alex, a lawyer trying to find love, and survive her job. Very similar to “Ally McBeal”, but with more emphasis on comedy, than drama. Sadly, after just 6 episodes airing in the USA, and with 13 episodes made in total, it looks like the show has been cancelled. (Paramount Comedy Channel)

FILM: Trains, Planes And Automobiles (15) – 10:00-11:55pm
Very funny and poignant comedy about one man’s desperate attempt to make it back home to his family and loved-ones, for the Thanksgiving holiday. When an advertising executive (Steve Martin) finds his journey home being hindered, he meets an annoying but misunderstood shower curtain ring salesman (John Candy). The two are forced together, in a set of highly unlikely, but deeply hysterical scenarios, that tests the limits of human endurance. One of the finest films from director John Hughes, better known for teen-comedies like “16 Candles”, “Weird Science” and “The Breakfast Club”. Very profane at times, but a really great movie that everyone should see at least once in their life. Contains some strong language. Showing uncut and in Widescreen. (Sky 1)

FILM: Swamp Thing (15) – 10:00-11:50pm
1985 horror fantasy, based on the acclaimed DC Comics creation, and directed by Wes Craven. When a scientist creates a serum that turns him into a half human/half plant hybrid, he finds his existence turns into a nightmare, as society shuns him. An interesting, if flawed, camp classic, starring Louis Jordan, Ray Wise and Adrienne Barbeau. Contains some minor violence and gore, and some bad language. (Sci-Fi Channel)

SCHEDULE CHANGE: NYPD Blue
Yes, it’s true, I’m afraid. More4 are making viewers wait, to see the last ever Season on UK TV. As such, there are no episodes of “NYPD Blue” currently scheduled. As soon as I now when the series returns, I’ll make an announcement on the AV Forums.

The Closer – 11:10pm-12:15am
Replacing “NYPD Blue”, is another chance to catch all of Season 1 of this interesting US crime drama, starring Kyra Sedgwick. The Pilot Episode, showing tonight, isn’t great, but if you stick with the series, by around Episode 4, it really starts to hit its stride! Showing Monday-through-Thursday for the next 3 weeks, at approximately the same time each night. Repeated at around 2:00am. (More4)

French Beauty – 11:20pm-12:30am
Documentary about why cinemagoers around the world, have become so entranced by French actresses, in the past 50-60 years. Interviews with Jeanne Moreau, Anouk Amie, Brigitte Bardot, Catherine Deneuvre, Sophie Marceau and many, many more, discuss how the public see them, and how they see themselves, as well as why they feel they should (or shouldn’t) be put on the proverbial pedestal. Contains occasional scenes of nudity and some strong language. (BBC2)

I’ll Do Anything To Get On TV! – 11:45pm-1:45am
Understandable late-night time-slot for this extremely controversial documentary looking at how far the British (and American) public are willing to go, in order to have their 15 minutes of fame. Just how far is acceptable, to get your face on national television, and is there any stage where the limits of what you do become unacceptable? Interviews from ex-Big Brother housemates, psychologists, TV professionals and people who have done some very weird things indeed, as well as clips from shows past and present, including “The Word”, and many others. Expect very strong language throughout, and scenes of an explicit adult nature, that are highly likely to cause offence. Be warned – this is not for the easily offended! (Channel 4 – who else!)

NEW: Seesaw – 12:00-1:00am
Late-night showing of a new series. No details I’m afraid, about the cast or the show’s theme, and it certainly seems an odd time-slot, but it seems to be some kind of crime drama or mini-series. Sorry, but I’ve got no other info. Repeated the same night at 3am. Continues next Monday night. (Hallmark)

Repeat run of Season 1 (I think), of the US comedy drama. Episodes repeated each day at 6:00pm. (Hallmark)

NEW: Shiny Shiny Bright New Hole In My Heart – 9:00-10:15pm
One-off drama set around modern-day Manchester, about a compulsive shopper, the people she comes into contact with in her job, and how her addiction starts to screw-up her life. Ignore the dubious title, but enjoy a well-crafted drama looking at something most of us would never dare to admit too. Daniela Nardini, Steven Mackintosh and Sally Hawkins star. Contains some bad language. (BBC2)

Mysterious Island – 9:00pm-12:40am
Complete US mini-series based on the famous novel by Jules Verne, with Patrick Stewart and Kyle Maclachlan. Not the greatest version of the story, with some very wooden dialogue, but it’s fun if you’ve got nothing better to do this evening, and want something to divert your attention from the washing-up. Gabrielle Anwar, Omar Gooding and Vinnie Jones co-star. (Sky 1)

Insect Movie Night – 9:00pm-4:40am
If insects, bugs and all-things creepy crawly make you squirm, then you may wish to avoid Zone Horror tonight. At 9:00pm, the ropey B-movie attack classic “The Bees” (15) airs. At 10:55pm, “Ticks” (18), starts to turn things a little bit sinister and more gory, as people suddenly begin to develop violent allergic reactions to a new species of lice! At 12:50am, “Leeches” (18) slithers onto the screens, in a grim and bloody manner, followed last of all at 2:45am by “Slugs”, loosely based on the Dean R Koontz horror novel of the same name. Each film is being shown uncut, and other than “The Bees”, each contains scenes of strong gore, violence and strong language. (Zone Horror)

Buffy The Vampire Slayer – 4:00-5:10am
One of the finest hours of TV drama ever written, gets a late-night and uncut repeat. Season 6’s “Once More, With Feeling” has the Scooby Gang cursed, forcing them to express their thoughts, fears and feelings, but only through music. It’s exceptionally well done, and even if you’ve never seen the show before, it’s still a great episode that can be enjoyed on its own. Showing uncut, and in the original Widescreen format. One note of warning, however: the episode does contain material and themes that are unsuitable for children and younger teenagers. If you’ve got very young children who like getting up early and watching Sky 1, you may want to be careful about them accidentally viewing this, as there are lyrics and scenes that are wholly inappropriate and unsuitable for them! (Sky 1)

Thunderbirds – 10:00-10:50am
The 1960’s Gerry Anderson puppet adventure series, returns once more to BBC2, for another complete run of all their adventures. For adults, wallow in nostalgia of your long-gone childhood, and enjoy the naff dialogue, silly plot-lines, set alongside some of the most enjoyable puppet animation and special effects that still stand the test of time. For children, sit back and watch one of the greatest kids shows of all time, and revel in what your parents watched when they were your age, that didn’t need lots of silly Drum N Bass music, no CGI-effects, or crass toy tie-ins, to keep you entertained. This was childrens’ TV as it should be: intelligent, entertaining, but above all, damn good fun! Episodes will air various days of the week, (Mondays though Fridays only), at roughly the same time, but please check your usual listings guide for specific details. (BBC2)

NEW: Mythbusters – 7:30-8:00pm
We’ve all heard various stories and tales: things like a can of cola will be able to completely rot an entire human tooth, in just 24 hours; or that eating carrots will make your eyesight better. But which are genuine, and which are old tales dreamed-up by parents, to force children to listen to us? This show attempts to solve these tales, and discover which are genuine, and which are complete balderdash. This is episode one of 16, in which the two presenters examine whether a coin dropped from a tall building really could kill someone as it nears the ground, and if running or walking through a rainstorm will keep you driest. (BBC2)

FILM: They Live (18) – 10:00-11:50pm
Great sci-fi horror comedy, courtesy of John Carpenter! When aliens seemingly integrate themselves into our society, and also look like us, one man soon discovers that a set of sunglasses gives them a whole new, and very nasty, look! A clever and inventive satire about alienation, society and advertising, with one of the longest, funniest but most futile fight sequences ever included. Some great dialogue too. Very funny, and great fun if you like your sci-fi movies with darkly satirical overtones. Roddy Piper stars. Contains some scenes of gore, and strong language. Highly Recommended. (Sci-Fi Channel)

FILM: The Toxic Avenger (18) – 12:50-2:45am
The uncut, uncensored US theatrical cut of this wonderfully outrageous horror comedy. When a nerdy swimming pool attendant, called Melvin, is bullied and harassed by a gang of thugs, he ends up in a vat of toxic nuclear waste! Melvin transforms from a weakling into New Jersey superhero The Toxic Avenger, who aims to help out the little people in Tromaville. The film is silly beyond belief, but there’re some great scenes – providing you have a sick mind like me! Famously known, because so much had to be cut before it was classified as an “18” by the BBFC in the mid-1980’s. Now you can see the full version, including the 12 or 13 minutes that were deemed too extreme and too offensive for UK filmgoers. I should warn you, that this uncut version does contain scenes and material that is likely to offend. If you are of a nervous disposition, or object to violent or sexual material, you may want to avoid this movie! Some of the violence is very gratuitous and tasteless beyond belief! And there’s quite a heavy strain of sexist material that runs throughout the film, too! Absolutely not for the kids! (Zone Horror)


Friday 28th
My Breasts And I – 9:00-10:00pm
Okay, okay – stop the sniggering at the back, please! Thank you! Honest, raw and moving documentary about the way women and men view the “breast”, and how they can be the cause of sublime happiness, and incredible self-loathing, by both genders. Jenny Frost, member of girl band Atomic Kitten, examines her own opinions on her physicality, whilst challenging some of the ways in which men, women, and society as a whole, uses and abuses the breast, to meet its own end, in the media. Has society evolved, or devolved, in the way women’s breasts are portrayed, and how does this affect a woman’s own self-esteem and view of her body? Are all men really “breast men”, at heart? Is bigger actually better? And if a woman chooses to have implants, who is she really trying to please: herself, her partner, or society’s view of her body? Required viewing for women and men, that just might challenge the way you think about this important part of the female body! Contains some nudity and material of a mature nature. (BBC3)

NEW: E-Ring – 10:00-11:00pm
All-new US political drama, starring Benjamin Bratt, Dennis Hopper, Aunjanue Ellis, Kelly Rutherford, Joe Morton and Andrew McCarthy. The time – 2005. The place – the United States Of America. The area – inside the Pentagon. Post 9/11, the war on terror has increased. Information comes in every day, that has to be checked, rechecked and verified for its accuracy, or lack thereof. A single fact could affect just one life, or ten million. The staff at the Pentagon are the people who have to work out what is the truth and what is bogus. This 20-episode drama series follows these men and women, and chronicles the conflicts they are forced to deal with, between the government they serve, the public they have to answer too, and each other. (FX)

FILM: Bringing Down The House (12) – 10:35pm-12:20am
Tasteless, and suspect comedy with Steve Martin and Queen Latifah, as a couple who find one another in an internet chat room. However, when they meet-up, he’s a divorce lawyer, and she’s a recently released female prison inmate! A bad film, in terms of plot, direction and acting. But the worst thing, is the nasty overtone of racism and sexism that runs throughout the film, which borders on the offensive at times! Every joke, irrespective of its tactlessness, is mined for “laughs”, in a film that really leaves a bad taste and a guilty feeling in the pit of your stomach as you watch it. Definitely an acquired taste! Contains bad language, brief scenes of drug usage, and scenes of a nature that some may find offensive or inappropriate, despite the low BBFC certificate. Showing uncut and in Widescreen. (BBC1 – Times vary in Scotland, Northern Ireland, and Wales! Please check your local listings guide for details.)

The Shield – 11:00pm-Midnight
Episode 4 of the latest series, and it’s even better than usual. In one of the toughest, most visceral, and gut-wrenchingly uncompromising episodes in the show’s entire history, Mackey is out on a limb as Kavanaugh steps up his attempts to put him and the Strike Team behind bars once and for all – in any way he can, legal or illegal. Meanwhile Claudette and Dutch have to investigate the brutal and deeply disturbing murder of a pregnant woman, who has had her unborn fetus forcibly removed, before being disposed of and left for dead! It’s a truly nasty viewing experience, but despite the nature of the episode, it’s jaw-dropping viewing. I haven’t seen a show improve this much between Seasons, in a long, long time! An absolutely fantastic, if very grisly and disturbing episode. Contains extremely distressing scenes, violent and sexually harrowing material. (Five)

FILM: Boys Don’t Cry (15) – 11:35pm-1:25am
This is more like it: a sensitive, thought-provoking and genuinely moving drama, that will bring tears to even the most hard-hearted of viewers. Hilary Swank plays Brandon Teena, a teenager who moves to a small town in Nebraska, and falls in love with a factory working girl, (Chloe Sevigny), after becoming involved with a gang of tough delinquents. But the relationship is threatened, and Brandon’s own life is put at risk, when his secret is revealed: Brandon Teena was originally born as Teena Brandon – a woman who has lived her last few years as a man. Based on a true-story, and Swank won a much-deserved Oscar for her performance as Brandon, the ending will knock you for six! It’s an absolutely harrowing experience, but one that true fans of cinema really should force themselves to watch, despite the uncomfortable subject matter. Up there with “Schindler’s List”, “The Insider”, “United 93” and other such moving true-life dramas. Contains strong language, adult themes, and material that may disturb and upset audiences. Showing uncut and uncensored, and in Widescreen. Everyone over 15 should watch this film! (BBC2)

I missed your July 18th update, a lot of interest there. I like the sound of the Downunder Channel as I have seen some extremely good films from there in the past. Also pleased to see that National Geographic channel will be shown in 16:9 format. Let's hope that World Cinema Channel will live up to its name.

There is such a lot of "watchables" in your latest update, I shall be glued to tv I know. I have put "Tromeo and Juliet" on the Sky planner for tonight, had to eliminate a lot of lesser programmes so I hope it's good.

Again, many, many thanks, I hope you have a wonderful summer break away from us all, but please don't disappear for good!

Your comments are spot on. My husband watched all of about three minutes and wanted it off, he hated it. I watched later and thought it the most weird film I had ever seen. Juliet's brother was something else!

I can't say I loved it but nevertheless it had a sort of fascination, so much of it was completely outrageous I kept wondering what was coming next. I did plenty of cringing too. Quite a viewing experience!!!
