I can honestly say that any time I have caught a few minutes of this, it hasn't even made the extreme corners of my mouth curl up in the slightest. Now I like to think I have a varied sense of humour from the obscure, black, filthy, slapstick, sarcastic, ironic, observational etc etc etc. but I found this the unfunniest tripe ever.

I thought the same thing when I saw a few minutes once without knowing what was going on. For some reason I watched a whole episode a few weeks later and I 'got it'. Now it's one of my favourite shows - there aren't that many 'jokes' you can quote, he just gets himself in the most embarrassing, cringeworthy situations which, bizarrely, I can relate to...

I LOVE Larry David and all his crazy foibles - he's so gloriously politically incorrect and anything goes on this programme, there are absolutely NO taboos. And lots of Hollywood stars make guest appearances on the show, as themselves, but play themselves as complete bumholes! No nicey-nicey puff-piece guest appearances here!

Each episode has two or three plot threads running through them with the finale of each week seeing all the plots come together in one horribly embarrassing and painful moment for Larry - usually very ironic consequences to his words and actions. There are also long-running plots and storylines which reward the long-term viewer.

I highly recommend it!

one of the best sitcoms ever imho
- btw its not so much that he's gloriously politically incorrect, its about him railing against all sorts of American quirks with his own quite liberal common sense attitude which always gets him into an embarassing mess, yet you're always on his side!

This has to be one of the best, if not the best, comedy show from the last few years. Yes its foul mouthed, yes some of the setups are predictable, but it is very funny.

If you liked this you should like (the now canceled) Arrested Development, similar in style but more story based.

Love it. Am gradually buying up the each season on DVD and am about to start season 4.

As has been mentioned, there aren't any stand out jokes as such, it's all about Larrys social ineptness and embarrassment. Quite similar to The Office in some respects.

The language and the subject matter can sometimes get a bit fruity, but personally I have no problem with that...

Indeed Gervais is a huge fan of LD's comedy style, hence Extras was even more like CYE than the Office was ... because Andy Millman and the fictional Larry David are okay likeable people and not particularly pathetic, unlike Brent

I asked the same question to my friend during a boring world cup game the other day and he couldn't be stopped with his lavish praise. We both like Seinfeld and he was amazed that I didn't watch CYE so a big thumbs up from him. (hi Richie, if you're reading this thread)

I was lent season 1 by a friend a few months ago. Since then, I own them all on DVD. It's great show, definetly not everyone will like it (just as with The Office). I'm also enjoying Arrested Development at the moment too.

Great show, my favourite current comedy. Its not laden with jokes, which can put casual viewers off, but the stories and situations Larry gets into are brilliantly created.

Curb is a comedy show for comedy fans. Your casual viewer may not get it, but it's a show almost universally loved by comedy performers, writers and aficionados.

By design, it doesn't appeal to everyone. Larry David - a true comic genius - doesn't want to create a show that families can sit down and watch, or one that will garner the support of the masses. He would - and Gervais has said the same thing - much rather create a show that some people love, than one that everyone likes.

Curb is the most cleverly written sitcom I've seen. Despite the improvised dialogue, David has admitted it takes longer to write an episode of Curb than it did to write the dialogue-based Seinfeld. The architecture of each episode is exquisite. There are very few times that an episode can be second-guessed; you're aware that things will not run smoothly for David, but it's rare that you can foresee the true extent of what is about to unfold, and the manner in which does.

Rarely is there a wasted line in the whole show. Every line is either functional - in terms of exposition, plot development or character development - or funny. There are times when I watched the show in awe of its construction and execution. If ever I wanted to show someone what to aim for in writing a sitcom, I would show them an episode of this show.

If you love real comedy, you'll love Curb.

There are also a lot of times when the situation is 'too forced' in order to make things backfire on Larry later on. This can get repetitive as it is used in most the episodes.

There are times when you can predict the outcome and which characters will come back to haunt Larry.

All I can say is Beverly Hills (or where ever it's set) is a VERY small place as Larry seems to run in to these 'hauntees' within days if not hours of initially meeting them!

Still, I do find it funny in most parts, just don't watch several episodes back to back, as that's when the 'flaws' show!

Curb is my favourite comedy ever, and you might like it, but it's 5 times funnier when you're on Larry David's wavelength and see exactly his thought processes, his reactions to people on the left side of his position on the IQ bell graph. lol
