Tommy Saxondale is a coarse, unprepossessing, corpulent ex-roadie; a thwarted, disappointed man with "anger management" issues who's had to turn his back on the high life to run a pest control business. It's a testament to writer/creator Steve Coogan's abilities that you stick with Saxondale - both the man and the comedy - to the end of this opening episode, because the character is so completely repellent. He's unsmiling, with a drably monotonous voice and dreadful personality. Tommy Saxondale is, in short, horrible and everything about his life is downbeat. Apart, that is, from his compliant girlfriend Magz (the wonderful Ruth Jones from Little Britain and Nighty Night) and his new assistant, a scruffy and naive young stoner. Though none of this is exactly directly appealing, if you can get past Tommy's loathsomeness, it's worth sticking around for some good lines and a terrific turn from Morwenna Banks as a ribald and indiscreet receptionist.
