Resident Evil

Having just watched this film, I'm sorry to say what a disappointment it is.

A slow start, a unispiring cast, sanitised violence that refuses to dwell on the matter in hand.

The zombies do very little and have none of the impact of Romero's.

The mutants are sadly lacking, and the whole sorry mess is filmed under constant light blue lighting, which reminded me of those blocks of bleach you find in pub urinals.

Another classic example of the MTV scholl of film making. Flashy, unsubstantial, lightning edited, softcore, dross.

Sorry, big thumbs down (apart from soundtrack that was quite atmospheric).

What this film needed, was a better director and far, far more graphic violence.

Yes, George A Romero was to have been the original director.I'm sure it would have been far gorier with him in control.

Well what do you expect from the guy who directed Soldier and Mortal Kombat!

By the way:

Yes, George A Romero was to have been the original director.I'm sure it would have been far gorier with him in control.

I do fear he'll never hit the heights of Event Horizon again. In fact, it was probably a one-off. Soldier really was appalling.

Strangely though, I found Resident Evil to be entertaining in the same way Tomb Raider was. Maybe having no idea what I was going to be presented with helped on both counts, I've never even had a sniff of either of the games the they're based on.

Sorry but even that is not an excuse for such an abject lack of judgement!

It ain't the lack of judgement, it's the lack of taste that's the problem

I think I'll live though

I've probably missed the boat on this one, but I had to voice my opinion.

As an avid fan of the games (found every secret, S grades for Res 2 and 3, even found Tofu in Res 2, all epilogues in Res 3) I was very dubious about watching this film.

Where do I start?

1. Milla Jovovich's character is called Alice (although her name isn't mentioned throughout) and as the song goes, "Who the f*ck is Alice?".
It's like making a film of Street Fighter and calling all the characters different names. Colonel Guy, M.Dyson, Ryon, Kevin, Chang Lu, Vigo etc. It doesn't work, does it?

2. Where are all the characters from the Game? The S.T.A.R.S members, Wesker, Barry, Chris, Jill etc.

3. The mansion appears for about 3 minutes, some of the most atmospheric/nauseating/tense/frightening scenes from the first game happened here.

4. What happened to Umbrellas impressive array of bio-weapons? The Hunter, the giant spiders, the skinned monkey creatures in the boiler room, the giant snake, the shark, even the Tyrant.

5. The licker was featured in the second game, not the first and it certainly didn't transform into a giant mutant lion-like creature. Perhaps I'm being slightly anal, but the first film should reflect the first game in the series, not a mixture of 1 and 2.

6. The office building below the mansion is populated by generic office workers, rather than security guards, medics, scientists and elite members of Umbrella.

7. The zombies are far too fresh. What happened to the acid vomiting, the rotting flesh, the exploding heads, and of course "Itchy, Tasty".

8. Red Queen? Where did that idea come from?

The film reminded me of a poorly acted CD-ROM game from about 5 or 6 years ago. I was expecting options to appear on the screen asking where I wanted to explore next.

Basically they should have made the director play the first game ONLY (not 2, 3 or Code Veronica etc), until he had completed it in less than 2 hours with and A grade. Then and only then would he have a true understanding of the themes, characters, and more importantly the storyline of the first game. There is more than enough material from the first game alone to come up with a decent screenplay.

I probably sound like I'm fifteen after reading this rather quick rant. I can assure you if I had more time I would write a thesis explaining where they went wrong.

I think they should ignore that this film ever existed, assemble a cast and crew, more importantly a director who truly understands the world of Resident Evil, and make the film properly.

It's another Street Fighter:The Movie. Let's completely ignore the game, come up with our own story, aim it at a much younger audience to achieve maximum exposure, completely miscast actors, disappoint every fan of the game and make them wish for permanent blindness.

I could go on for much longer, but would only embarrass myself.

Only by 9 months.

I finally got round to watching this movie(Superbit version)last week. After the bad reviews it received i was not expecting much but i had bought it because i am a major fan of all the games.
I was very pleasantly surprised because i found it to be a very entertaining film with an excellent soundtrack(DTS).There were lots of familiar things that i already knew from playing the games but the plot line could have been more accurate. I actually ended up watching the whole film again the next day when my dad wanted to watch it,(he is also a fan of the games)and enjoyed it just as much if not more the second time.
So to sum up,always keep an open mind and judge a film for yourself, dont put too much faith in what you hear from other people.

I think I prevented myself from being bitterly disappointed for as long as I could. Eventually I had to give in, maybe, just maybe I would be proved wrong. Evidently not.

Perhaps I'll watch it again and try not to think of the game, it might make the film easier to come to terms with.

The problem I have is that I am a Resident Evil/Bio Hazard collector; surely this DVD should be part of my collection. Inevitably I'll convince myself that I must have it, I'll end up watching it when I'm in a good mood (not very often) that way at the end of the film I'll be back to my pessimistic, cynical self.

Its a typical 'Hollywood' horror movie - No scares, No gore, just Flash *****. only good thing was the '****' shot and i'm quoteing Milla Jovovich from the audio com
Also what about the Ending with the newspaper 'The Dead Walk' headline - George Romero should sue the useless sods.

bibooo

There is quite alot of bits and pieces that do link the movie to the games see IMDB here

From what I can make out it's people who have played the game that are slagging off this film and the folks like me who have never played it think it's a decent film in it's own right. As for giving the director stick, remind me again of Peter Jackson's reputation before LOTR, what about Spielberg's "1941 and "AI!, R Scott's "Hannibal", James Cameron's "Piranha II" etc.......

The praise heaped upon George A Romero by people IMO is more to do with the fact that he was avant garde rather than talented, his films are funny as opposed to scary

The only film in recent times that I considered to be "rather" scary was Relic, with the lights off and the sound cranked up this Laserdisc never fails to make the unexpected jump

Peter Jackson's reputation before LOTR was very good - Brain Dead is a classic and Heavenly Creatures and The Frighteners were both excellent.

Studios like New Line don't give boat loads of money to people with a bad reputation.

How I long for a special edition dts version of The Frighteners with no EE!
