Public Information Films

Seeing how we've been reminiscing a lot lately, here's one for the over 30s....

Public Informatiom Films that the BBC used to put out in the 70s.

'Charlie says...' is the obvious one but who else remembers....

One pointing out the dangers of swimming in lakes, shows a kid drowning and the Grim Reaper appears
That really used to spook me!
It worked with me.

I'm sure they used this 'shock technique' a lot and I recall similar ones about playing near railways and talking to strangers.

Can't remember what this one was warning of but it had a man (Reg Varney, I think) who kept having accidents as he was walking down the street.
Anyway, at the end it shows him coming out of the hospital all in plaster and on crutches and he turns to the camera as if to give the narrator a funny look.
I guess it was warning of pedestrians and 'everyday accidents' that could occur in the street?

"I wish, I wish I didn't keep losing my bird"
"Then learn to swim young man, learn to swim"

There were quite a few about road safety...

"Think once, think twice, think BIKE"

"Beware of the weaver bird"

Reginald someone or another and parallel parking.
(or was that an ad?)

"Remember, I won't be there when you cross the road"
Green Cross Man.

They tended to use those really naf animations a lot
(if you can call it that!)

That couple on the beach, Pertuna and Arthur(?) about calling the Lifegurad if you see somebody in distress in the sea.
I think they were in another one, set in the country with an irate farmer about litter (?)

My memory's fading!

Need some help here from 'senior' members of the forum!

What about Toby and badger, with the ice cream van. There was the one with the kid running on the beach, about to run on broken glass. Rolph Harris, at the baths with his big toe.

Agree with the learn to swim one with the Grim reaper, very scary when I was ickle..

How about Jo and Petunia, they did it at the seaside and in the country side I seem to remember, lucky old Jo thats what I say

Si

Here's a piccy to jog the memories..

PS. Kevo didn't realise you'd already mention Petuna and Arthur What we really need is for Ian J and Uncle Eric to reminisce about the early years of TV/Cinema
ie.
Dont leave home without your gas mask...
Make sure the man holding the red flag in front of the vehicle is sober...etc

I remember the one about 'What to do if you have a gas leak in your home' that ran in the 80's on TV.

A couple arrive home and they smell gas, the women goes to switch the light on, the man shouts NOOOOOO!!!! very loudly. It then goes on about what to do if you have a gas leak, (open doors and windows, DONT switch on lights and electrical items, and to phone the gas board).

This public info film probably saved my life:

When I was about 13, I returned home from school to find the house smelling of gas. Remembering the PIF, I opened all the doors and windows, didn't turn on any lights (it was the middle of winter and getting dark). I found the cause of the leak, which was a gas ring on the cooker that had not been turned off properly. If I had not seen that PIF I would probably not be around today to tell this story as well as the rest of the street!.

So I think that PIF's are great and I wonder why we don't have them any more.

Also remember the Dave Prowse Green Cross Code PIF's with the cheesy robot that was cashing in on the Star Wars films.

Oopps.

I've just seen a sort of PIF from the Food Standards Agency on TV, about Food Hygiene (washing your hands etc...).

So they do still exist, sort of, (you have to phone for an information pack or something!).

Surely you all ..must remember the farmyard one!!
Deadly combine harvesters...imflamable haystacks....dangerous pitch forks protruding from un-seen places, deadly chemicals in lovely red and blue(very tempting!)
I dont remember if these were on the tv ,or at Saturday morning pictures.
You know ....the "Childrens Film Foundation"
