A Blast from the Past
Watching 24 the other night I get to thinking about some of the great mini-series I watched (a lot of) years ago.
Two sprang immediately to mind. Roots and Shogun.
Now I know it was about 20 odd years ago when these were on but at the time they really blew me away. I Looked forward to seeing them every week.
Quick search on play turns up the region 1 25th anniversary edition of Roots. Is it really that long ago? I might give this a try.
Can't find anything on Shogun. It starred Richard Chamberlain. Is it available on VHS?
Anybody else remember these as classics? or is it just me reminiscing?
Cheers

I remember them well (getting old )
'Mini-Series' used to be all the rage in the 70s/80s.
Who else remembers....
Rich Man, Poor man
79 Park Avenue
Studs Lonnegan
Lace ("which one you bitches is my mother?")
V
Rufus something or other (about a man wrongly convicted and shipped off to Australia where he tries to clear his name).
What was it called?
There must be more 'classic' mini series from yesteryear.

I still remember Roots from 25 years ago. I was 8 at the time so it must have had some effect on me. I'd say buy it. It was based on a true story of a Black American guy re-tracing his family history right back to being brought as slaves from Africa. Lots of memorable moments.
I remember that the TV series of Shogun was not a patch on the book, but not too bad.

Yeah the Roots book and TV were pretty close.
Probably agree on the Shogun, but I'd still like it on DVD!
Roots is £33.95 delivered from Play, but it is 9.5 (yes Nine and a Half hours) of viewing. Only 4:3 obviously, but that's ok.
I definitely feel a purchase coming on.
Anybody got it?
Cheers

Do I need a better player?

Get the Tosh into the Shogun.
The spongy suspension will eliminate all jitter.

Of course the 4WD drive will make the disc spin quick which could cause distortion but the upside is discs will play even when covered in mud due to extra traction.

I tried this, but everytime I wound the window down to fart, there was quite visible picture interference from the electrics.
Not good.

There was indeed. I'm thinking that the DVD set covers both.

Ah but thats what Air Con was invented for - removes all traces of guffs, provided you dont die an agonising death waiting for it to work.

You are right, there was it was called Roots: The Next Generations.
Any one remember Centennial traced a town from the 1700s to late 1970s, I wouldn’t mind having that on DVD especially the early ones.
Bryan Pringle .... Cheese and Egg bad tempered chief of Thunderbird II (what’s for dinner? cheese and piggin egg).
Trevor Bannister .... Heavy Breathing the Romeo.
Graham Haberfield .... Winston Platt football mad.
John Barrett .... 'Smellie' Ibbotson the name says it all.
Tim Wylton .... Eric the Welsh one
Paula Wilcox .... Naomi
John Woodvine .... Bloody Delilah #1 (1969) Depot boss
Brian Wilde .... Bloody Delilah #2 (1970) Depot boss
