Thumbs down Mysterious Island

Did anybody watch this on Sky One yesterday.

I was not too impressed to say the least. The story has been changed from the original book once again. The special effects were dire, made the dinosaur stampede scene in King Kong look good!!.

Vinny Jones as a pirate with more than three lines is totally miscast- I have not seen acting this bad since Battlestar Earth on his part. His pirate voice does not help.

Why oh why do are these adaptations made? I cannot remember actually seeing a decent one. Using Patrick Stewart to play Captain Nemo and a fan of Jules Verne was the only reason I watched this. I should have known really!!!

I prefer the Original Movie version with James Mason which was not brilliant but far better than this

Patrick Stewart seems to be in all these cheapo remakes lately.
Moby Dick was another of his turkeys.
I watched a little bit, saw the praying mantis bit, but could not stick with it for long after PS starting doing his stuff.
In all fairness he wasn't helped by the crappy script.

SPOILER WITH NOVEL COMPARISIONS:

The balloon crew actually comprise of all men and a dog -no women as in the series.
Nemos identity is eventually discovered much later on due to various events and clues he leaves behind to help the castaways.
The idea that pirates are looking for lost gold is a bit pants as this is not true.
The oversized creatures are a product of his experiments not natural radioactive evoloution
Nemo actually builds an electric gun not a nuclear weapon - ha ha!!

The other Jules Verne novel with Captain Nemo is 20,000 leagues under the sea. Ther have been a couple of films not novel based ith Nemo as well:

Captain Nemo and the undersea city
the return of Captain Nemo

Hope this helps!!

Sounds like the 1961 film version (one of my childhood favourites)), stays, in many ways, a lot more faithful to the book then. Glad i forgot to watch the first episode of this now. It sounds almost as bad as the recent Poseidon Adventire.

I can only answer this in spoiler format:

Captain Nemo dies at the end of Mysterious Island in the Nautilus buried in the cavern due to the volcano erupting. So his story ends there : ( I personally think he could have survived and Mr Verne could have written an extra novel ...aah well

Cool

Thanks that’s what I was after and why I was so ambiguous

Its funny he created characters like that he had a similar one in Master of the World which was a very similar story.

I wish I read this thread last week. I put the first episode on Tivo and looked forward to watching it tonight but had to give up after half an hour. The animations were terrible with the rat managing to run without it's back feet touching the ground at all. Vinnie Jones was embarrassing and the chap from Heartbeat obviously got his accent from the Gary Oldman school of terrible accents - dire

from director Russell Mulcahy, this was one lazy production. I thought i reconized the name.

He made one or two good stuff, he's doing Resident Evil: Extinction next...

Hope he uses a different FX house !

The programme was so bad it was good, apart from bad acting, bad effects, it still had some sense of suspense and fear. Vinny seemed to be in pantomine with his pirate acting, Johnny Depp if safe.
