For the same reason that every intelligent life form in the Universe appears to speak American.

The story I heard was that the director didn't want to ruin the actors performances by having them put accents on.

But that doesn't explain why cockney Bob Hoskins fades in and out of a naff Russian accent during his first scene...

Thumbs down

I think prople have got the wrong end of the stick here. Enemy at the gates is not a "Russians did it all" film at all. And come to think of it, neither is Pte Ryan.
That rubble that is the set for Enemy is what is left of Stalingrad, a once proud industrial city named after one of it's country's finest leaders.
It is supposed to show what a terrible thing war is and yet love can still be found in amongst all the turmoil.
Pte Ryan is supposed to show the hardships of war and how men struggle to come to terms with it. In both of these movies, the directors have depicted the horror of war perfectly. Remember, they are both true stories glamorised (slightly in both cases).
And just think, people who work in air conditioned offices looking at computer screens all day get millions in compensation for work related "stress" while I know men who have lost limbs and minds in modern day conflicts who get nothing!
(Steps back of the soapbox!)
