21 years, Countdown was on, bit of an institution really, I can't see anyone else doing it.

I was really shocked when I heard this. I have to say I never really liked him - he came across as slightly oily in my view - but it's sad news and I hope his loved ones are coping ok.

I agree, it just wouldn't be right if anyone else did it.

Very sad news. If no one else does it, Channel 4 will lose one of the very few intellectual programes it has left...

Although never a fan of count down ,he always seem to come over as a genuine sort of chap, and I am sure he will be sadly missed by friends of colleagues

Hi,

I too, will miss him. I didn't really watch the show that much, but you knew Richard was a real down-to-earth kind of guy - unlike many other so-called celebs! He never came across as anything other than natural, and really didn't object to being poked fun of, and even managed (on occasion) to defend himself quite eloquently.

My condolences to all who work on "Countdown" and to his family, friends and relatives on their loss.

RIP Mr Whiteley - You will be missed!

Hi all,

I was sad to hear about Richard; he was definitely a decent man, very upfront and dependable. I used to watch Countdown as I'm an avid crossword fan and somehow the two were interlinked but regretfully I hadn't done so for a while.

He was a typical Yorkshireman and it always amused me that he returned annually to his favourite village in Spain or Portugal because of the meat pies they made there! He featured in a programme, where he was house hunting in that area, accompanied by his girl friend (I won't attempt to spell her name) and was always so good humoured. He was a celebrity without the hype, I will miss him.

HI,

Just a quick announcement...

A special combination of tribute shows will air on Channel 4 on Friday 1st July between 2:30pm and 4:30pm! First off there will be a documentary about Richard Whiteley. Next there will be the last ever (45-minute) episode of "Countdown" he ever recorded, which coincidentally is this year's Grand Final. Then, there will be a tribute show, which will probably include clips of the best of Richard and some out-takes or funnies as well.
