Is it me?

just saw a couple of morons called Dick & Dom presenting a new version of 'ask the family'. I doubt anything could more succinctly illustrate the dumbing down of TV!

Having seen a few episodes of the original show, this new version, although being more lively (and possibly more entertaining), is somewhat dumbed down.

But then the questions on the original were of University Challenge standard.

I still wonder how on earth a crappy childrens tv presenter and a crappy kiddies magician managed to gain such cult appeal....
Burn them to death.

Plus, i really, really hate their haircuts - too many impressionable young men in the south east are copying them and it makes me want to cough up my tar-lined lungs and rub them in their faces

I use to be able to get most of the questions when they were firs show but the old one they showed the other night I did not get as many, although I was on the net (here) at the same time.
I think some of these programs get your brain working logically. There use to be a program on the radio and they posed a logic brainteaser every day, at first it was hit and miss if I got them but by the end of 2 weeks I was getting them everyday and use to ring in everyday and get a mention. I even made one up which they used.

The one shown the other night was a final I think so maybe a bit tougher than norm. I think the point is that although the questions from the old shows may seem to be the level of question that you get now on University Challenge at the time they were just seen as questions that anybody who had a reasonable education should have known.

I think El JimBob makes a valid point!

Cool

I have just seen this and it puerile rubbish even for a children’s program.
Anybody who remembers the old Ask The Family must remember Des O’Conner’s song about them. A Dick a Dom Dom are Dick a Dumb Dumb.

They say the literacy is on the increase in school this program will be just up their street.

Hi,

I'm not exactly a fan of D&D, but they're not that bad. They're certainly no more childish than "TISWAS" was in its day, or "Number 73" was in the eighties!

If you really want dumbed-down TV, you need look no further than some of the that C4 still turn-out, e.g. Big Brother (and all its associated spin-offs), Eurotrash (which actually used to be fun, but is now just ), the whole T4 strand of presenters (and most of the programmes), and all the daytime makeover/DIY/be a better person kind of dross they air.

ITV1 are just as much to blame, with all of their crap. "I'm A Celebrity...", "Hell's Kitchen", "The World's Worst/Best/Least/Most.... whatever", "You've Been Framed", "Ant And Dec...", "TV's Naughtiest Blunders... ", "All Right On The Night...", "Recoats", etc, etc.

Only Channel 5 has actually improved (for the most part). From a channel that used to show a lot of tat, it's actually my fave terrestrial station, and shows a lot of quality material now.

Seems that companies such as topman and river island only stock clothes suitable for presenting CBBC in these days. It's ***** innit!

Metrosexual stuff grates on me a bit!

If TV gets any dumber, maybe the TV executives will finally understand it.
