Eccleston quits Doctor Who!

He won't be doing the second series, says he doesn't want to be typecast! Click here for the news.

seems like he should have considered that before accepting the role in the first place

Hi,

It now seems that David Tennant, from the BBC drama "Casanova" is likely to be the 10th Doctor, for Season 2 of the new "Dr Who" show. A second series has been given the go-ahead by the BBC, and will consist of another 13 episodes. No word yet, though, if Billie Piper will be in it, or not.

Metro seemed to imply this morning that Piper had signed for the second season.

I wasn't a major fan of the show when I was younger, though I did enjoy the first of the new series, but I thought thewy always changed who played Dr Who for each series anyway.

I think three years was the amount of time the producers wanted each doctor to last in the good days of who but of course it never always worked out like that

Well maybe now the BBC could create some brand new sci-fi to fill their Schedules instead of rehashing past glories. What complete rubbish this new series is , Christopher Ecclestone deserves knighting if Dr Who goes down in the aftermath!

How many regenerations has The Doctor got left? Soon he'll have to go stealing bodies like The Master...

The Doctor has four lives left plus an extra evil incarnation, so I'm reliably informed.

Although, apparently, one of the storylines provided the writers with a loophole, should they require more regenerations.

Jon was my favorit he did 5 series.

Patrick Troughton only did 2 seasons but they were long ones, eg the last story War Games was over 10 episodes.

I don't think his saying he is going to quit so soon after the first episode is going to do the show any favours. we will have to see how the ratings are over the next couple of episodes though to be sure.

although there's only been one episode to date shown, I thought the new Doctor was excellent, and look forward to the rest of the series.
He's being a bit hasty in his 'typecast' theory, I mean it could be a good thing to carry on for a 2nd series depending on popularity of course.
How many actors think they can leave their popular roles to expand their resume's only to see them cut pretty short.
Still, Billy Piper looks set to stay and she was surprisingly (IMO) excellent in the role - good on her.

The have called him back to re-record the end of the last episode, looks like hes being called back to be put in a situation for regeneration.

apparently the guy who played Casanova (David Tennant?) is in the frame........he was great in that, IMHO, and it was also written by Russel T Davies

Thought tonight's episode was fine - next week's tale is tipped as a corker by all accounts.

I think David Tennant will be perfect for the role and he should use his costume from Casanova as the Doctor as well.

I thought he'd agreed to film the Christmas special and that would be his final appearance - unless he's only in it for a minute or two as he regenerates into the new Doctor. So the Xmas special would be the cross over/introduction of Doctor number 10!

The Beeb have only got 3 regenerations (including next) to play with - that is if they wish to respect the continuity of shows past!

Of course given the historical inferences of there only being 1 Doctor throughout Earth's history (Eccleston) - we're really looking at Doctor no.2 - in Russell Davies reinvention/reimagining of Doctor Who - which is why Russell refers to the next series as the "second" series.

Not at all.

It is clear in episode one that Eccleston's Doctor is a regeneration. Also, the fact that the internet guy in the episode has picked up on that Doctor's re-appearances throughout history, does not mean to say that there haven't been many other Doctors as well.

He simply just hasn't come across them.

I think they might as well scrap the regeneration limit and just get a new actor/doctor each year. Would help viewer fatique and allow different actors that would not consider the role to take it on.
You never know, could be a great british tv tradition....The Xmas Doctor Who regeneration!

There's plenty in the surrounding books hinting at bigger plans for the Doctor which would get around the regeneration limit, and don't forget everything in The Trial of a Time Lord!

That scene was rather clumsily written, but there were some hints that the conspiracy theory guy had actually twigged that the Doctor had more than one appearance. He mentions at one point that he thinks the title "Doctor" is handed down from father to son, and he also very distinctly says, when showing Rose the photograph, "that's your Doctor, right?" - i.e. there are others he's aware of.
