Another Disney film precedes "Mulan", but this time, on BBC2 at 12:25pm. "Dragonslayer" is a darker and more mature film, in the vein of "The Dark Crystal", "The Nightmare Before Christmas" and "Conan The Barbarian", and one that isn't really suitable for the youngsters to watch on their own, despite its early timeslot. Some edits for violence may be made, but many scenes will be very frightening for younger audience members, and parents may also object to some brief nudity early-on in the movie too. This film is definitely worth a viewing by older film fans who prefer their gothic fantasies to be darker, and with more macabre overtones. There are some brilliant mechanical effects, as well, towards the film's climax. A British/US co-production, from 1981.
According to Pooch's March tv highlights sticky.

Tuned in near the end and it definitely had some cuts. Excellent film though, got on R1 as soon as it came out. The dragon is still one of, if not THE best Dragon to grace ours screens.

Hi,

The BBC did indeed edit this film, and I can certainly see why, because it is a very dark and mature film that deserves a much later (post 7pm) timeslot. This movie came out at a time when Disney knew how to give adults a good film, without having to tone everything down to stop kids being too frightened.

It's a shame that Disney now only make stupid kiddy films! (And I don't count the Pixar films in that comment, as they aren't true Disney films, ala "Aladdin", "Beauty And The Beast" et al.)

Thanks for letting me know Pooch (had my suspisions it would be). I'l wait till i get a copy of the R1 version. Its been many years since i've seen this film (on its initial video rental), so dont want to spoil it with an inferior version

Saw part of this yesterday and noticed cuts to the Holy man (Ian McDiarmid) confronting the dragon Vermithrax at its lair and also Galen inside the lair/baby dragons eating the princess scene - a couple of shots trimmed of the dragons chewing at the princess's ankle. You also only saw two baby dragons killed as opposed to three.

I imagine the very brief (and innocent) nudity was trimmed from earlier in the film too, but I may be wrong.

Didn't bother to watch the whole film as I have the R1 disc.

Has anyone got/seen the R2 Buena Vista release which is now completely uncut like the R1 Paramount I believe? Just wondering how the transfer compares on the two, as the R1 has a very fine print but it does reveal matte lines/boxes that weren't quite as apparent on the TV showing.
