Cool Earthsea Headup On Sunday

This is being shown on Easter Monday evening on Channel 4. I have read very mixed reports of it, but should be worth a look.
It is based on a series of book about a apprentice magician in a fantasy realm. Wrote long before Harry Potter.

it wasn't very good. Bearable if you like fantasy.

Is this the "Wizard Of Earthsea" series by Ursula K LeGuin? I think I read the first one when I was about 10 (a very long time ago). I can't remember much about it and I don't think I finished the series (trilogy?).

Skyguide time is right as you state 5.20pm, but when i set it to record it in the sky planner, it jumps 1 hour forward!, to 6.20pm, maybe i need to restart the box!.

The timings will be right when the clocks change, you don't need to do anything

Thats the one. In fact I read it when I was older and finished it and not too long ago I was thinking of picking the book up again. There is a Epic battle in the book which no way can I see them being in the mini series.

They do include Amanda Tapping though (blink and you will miss her) which more than makes up for most things

Sorry only seen the US Scifi screening and that was last year so not sure how it translates to the UK version, seem to recall it was in the first half though.
Amanda played the "spirit" that Ged resurrected in the woods.

Just thought I would post a link to the author's comments about the mini-series - here. Not a very happy person.

The only thing that watching part of this mini series has done has made me deteremined to re-read the books.

Cool

Although I enjoyed the book better I also liked the mini series and did not think it as bad as what some folk made out, a lot better than Dinotopia and some other fantasy mini series.

Terrible dramatisation of the books.
I'm very fond of these novels and I was so disappointed when I heard the scifi channel had got thier mitts on it.
Its a massive story : the TV version is really only the first book with a tiny pointless rehash of the second crowbarred into it. (the second incidentally has almost no continuation with the first until the last third of the book).

The pursuit of the gebbeth should have been really white knuckle : imagine a supernatural "terminator" or "duel". The whole depiction of magic steers clear of frivolity and is somewhat believable , cause and effect , action and reaction . The complete antithesis of the Potter shlep.

This could have been something a bit different in exactly the way the books are but they've turned it into a poor man's harry potter. Utter waste.

The visual effects are about the worst I've seen for a while (some of the crap they passed of in this is unbelievable , badly tracked backgrounds , big blurry mattes chopping in the foregrounds...I wouldn't have let this stuff out the door regardless of how cheap it was)

Forget this rubbish and read the books. Makes me remember why I went off Tolkien when I was a kid.
