'How The West Was Won' in Cinerama

'How The West Was Won' is scheduled to be shown in the original 3 strip Cinerama process at the Bradford Film Festival on 12 March at 2.30pm in Pictureville Cinema at the National Museum of Photography, Film and Television. Other highlights include celebrating the 50th anniversary of Todd-AO. More details of the festival and its Widescreen weekend here: http://www.nmpft.org.uk/bff/2005/

The Odeon was never equipped to show Cinerama. 'How The West Was Won' ran at the Casino Cinerama, (now the Prince Edward Theatre), for a couple of years. The Coliseum was also a 3 strip Cinerama theatre and the Astoria and the Royalty each presented single lens 'Super Cinerama'.

There were only two 'drama' films made in 3 strip Cinerama, the first five were travelogues. 'How The West Was Won' was, and still is, a huge success. 'The Wonderful World of the Brothers Grimm' was less so. They were not made with the intention of being shown on TV or DVD, Cinerama being an unique process. Nothing in widescreen cinema has equaled 3 strip Cinerama's picture definition and audience involvement which can only be experienced in a Cinerama equipped cinema. Now the only cinema in the world showing regular performances is Pictureville, Bradford. There is one in Los Angeles and another in Seattle but they have only occasional presentations. It is worth a trip to Bradford for this now rare experience. The first Cinerama film, 'This Is Cinerama', shows on the first Saturday of each month at 1.30pm, and other titles show occasionally. Cinerama launched widescreen cinema in 1952, CinamaScope followed in 1953, Todd-AO in 1955, and others came and some failed. All of which leads us to our now having widescreen tv.
