I saw the film yesterday. I enjoyed it a lot, although I too found the plot rather puzzling. It was the general mood of the picture that appealed to me (especially the music).
I assume that the story was meant to be ambiguous.
SPOILER: As I understood it, the "present" that Clifford's wife buried in the park contained love letters written by Sean I to her, who had been Sean's lover. Sean II found and read the letters, which might have given him enough info about Sean I to claim to be his reincarnation.
Since Sean II didn't recognize Clifford's wife, she convinced him that he couldn't possibly be Sean I's reincarnation.
But since it isn't very likely that the love letters contained all the knowledge about Sean I that Sean II seemed to have, maybe he really was a reincarnation.
So we have (at least) two alternatives:
1. Sean II was suffering from a delusion that he recovered from by the end of the film.
2. Sean II really was the reincarnation of Sean I; he couldn't remember the other woman because the one true love in his life had been his wife after all.
END SPOILER
Neither alternative is especially convincing; additional interpretations are very welcome!
