Olympics 2012: Opening Ceremony

So who do you think will be the final torch bearer?
Looking forward to the opening ceremony.
Hope the BBC do a better coverage than they did with the Queens diamond jubilee.
I live in Weymouth and we have a small part in the Olympics.

Probably David Beckham or similar. Our society seems to value "celebrity" more than, say, a top surgeon who saves lives and makes a difference.

BBC HD sound seems very low. Hopefully they'll sort out any teething trouble quickly.

I hope Steve Redgave carries the torch. Best Olympian we have ever had.

Sounds better in Pro-logic on the extra HD channel, it's still a load of rubbish though.

Any thoughts as to what went wrong with Paul McCartney's sound?

All the rest of the show was impressive.

McCartney came on and the mix was dire... way too much bass guitar. Vocals too low.

Pink Floyd and fireworks is always good TV, and the main torch was pretty cool too. But why were in gold chav hoodies, and the US in military berets?

Regards

I had my doubts when I saw the first photos, but I thought it was fantastic and for something on this scale, which is watched by so many people it was surprisingly edgy and fun. Glad this wasn't the embarrassment many predicted it would be, I thought it was brilliant !

The actual backing track and vocals to mask his ageing voice appeared to start before he did, and then it was a case of catch up. Eventually the backing track was switched off, hence the low key performance by McCartney.

Apart from McCartney I thought it was fantastic. A bit sloppy or confusing in places maybe, but parts of it were genius and nearly all of it was very good indeed and far better than we could have hoped for.

Now wishing I'd upgraded my TV to 3D (which I'm doing in 3 weeks anyway).

I watched it in 3D expecting to go to 2D within 10 mins....hours later..
Thought it was an excellent ceremony, humour, great music and I thought the history of Britain was very well done. In 3D it almost looked Lord of the Rings like due to the scale, you really could apprechiate the size of the stage.
Nice little twist on the lighting of the main flame.
Well done to all involved!

You're being too kind. It reminded me of those dreadful compilation singles from the likes of Stars On 45 and Jive Bunny. The lowest point I saw had to be the dancing to tiger Feet. I gave up before McCartney.

Maybe it wasn't that bad after all if Aidan Burley hated it so much.

Yep, people seem to have either loved it or hated it with equal measure.
Apart from a few interesting bits (ie the James Bond bit) I thought it all looked a bit naff really.
I especially found the whole "internet age" section very boring. Having loads of grinning teenagers jumping around with little instant messsage boxes popping up, whilst it may be an important part of British culture, isn't very visually interesting.

This was a highlight though. I thought it was hilarious when I saw it last night

Shame the Queen has forgot to smile, she looked quite miserable throughout

Hi

I was a tad confused my Bond and the Queen. When it was made to look as if Daniel Craig and the Queen jumped out of the helicopter, the Queen and Prince Phillip come into the Olympic stadium. Did Bond become Prince Phillip on the way down lol? It would have been much better if the had a Prince Phillip look alike in the helicopter and then made to look as if they both parachuted into the stadium.

I thought i was quite good over all, much better than I thought it would be.

At first thought it looked like a cheap stage version of LOTR with the hobbit village, iron section and also Treebeard at the top. All the children's book characters were good along with Mr Bean and Bond. While I liked the countdown intro vt and the other 2 why was the sound so low? In the first one there was some narration going on but no way could we hear it and I thought the volume during the Bond vt was low as well.

I thought it was good of the queen to join in with the fun , it was just a shame Bond didn't walk out with her or least a look-a-like for him. We also all laughed when the queen was doing her nails and looking bored.

And then the last sound error was the start of McCartney section, it sounded like we were getting the delay audio from the stadium for a few seconds but having read an above post about the backing track that makes sense. Why if using a backing track do they find it so hard to sink it all, they must do a rehearsal with the tech crew at some point. I know it's not easy doing a live show but you think for a show this big they could sort it.

At least Boris didn't get a part but I suppose he has one in the closing ceremony so he can still make an impact.
