New SkyOne series called Hex started last night. I Sky+'ed it. Should I watch it this evening or hit the yellow button?

Afternoon,

I actually watched the 105-minute Pilot Episode, and quite enjoyed it. So far, everyone compares it to "Buffy The Vampire Slayer", but it's got almost nothing to do with that. The only similarities are that the heroine (Cassie) is female, has long blond hair, and the demon Azazeal is vaguely similar (in his human form) to Angel actor David Boreanaz. (Long black trenchcoat, manly good looks, brooding, et al.)

The show itself, is pretty darn good. It's actually a US-UK co-production: Sky and Sony Pictures (who also produce "The Shield"! The ending of the Pilot Episode, is a bit of a shocker, and certainly leaves you wanting more.

I don't want to spoil it, for those who haven't watched it yet, but if you want a gutsy, ballsy, genuinely intelligent British drama, with fantasy/horror overtones, then it's worth a watch.

My only disappointment, was the large amount of heavy rock music. It was appalling! All no-name, grunge bands shouting into a microphone, and sounding like pigs being crushed by a snow-plough! Oh, and Sky crushed the credits, so you couldn't read who all the actors were playing which character. However, the cast is as follows:-

Cassie - Christina Cole
Thelma - Jemima Rooper
Troy - Joseph Morgan
Leon - Jamie Davis
Jo Watkins - Anna Wilson-Jones
Roxanne - Amber Sainsbury
David Tyrel (The Head of the College) - Colin Salmon
Gemma - Zoe Tapper
Azazeal - Michael Fassbender
Lilith Hughes - Geraldine James
Rev. George - Alison Newman

Other than that, a great show for a Pilot Episode! I'm going to see how many episodes there are. It will probably be 13 episodes in total, including the double-length Pilot. Just be warned: the show is quite dark in tone, and does deal with some adult topics, like rape, etc. I wouldn't recommend it to under-15's. Once you've seen the Pilot, you may see why I say this.

hi,

I liked it, I just could'nt work out, if the cast were american playing englsih, or americans playing americans students, the accents were not obivious.

Overall not bad, wating for things to get darker.

Really enjoyed this, although somewhat spoilt towards the end by having that annoying woman who played the footy agent in footballer's wives!

raigraphixs - is it not an english cast with (unsurpisingly) english accents?

Hi,

Yep! It's an English cast, with their natural English accents.

Hi Again,

Just found this out, r.e. "Hex".

The show is only for five episodes, including the Pilot Episode. Sky are basically trying out this show, and depending on reviews, and viewer ratings, they may commission a second longer series.

So, Series 1 will be over by the middle of November! And just as we are beginning to get to know the characters, as well. Oh well! Enjoy it whilst you can!

It's also set in a school and the majority of the cast are supposed to be 17 year old school kids.

I quite liked it.

I quite liked it, I was expecting it to be like Buffy but all in all so far so good. Its a shame it is only for 5 episodes as Poochjd mentioned, lets just hope the series gets good enough for them to carry on with it.

Hi,

The "Pilot Episode" is being repeated several times between now and next Sunday night, on both Sky 1 and Sky Mix. Check press for details, as I don't have the necessary info to hand.

Thumbs up Re-Hex Music

I watched the pilot and was impressed. It certainly is not like Buffy at all, I don't think you could compare any show to Buffy really. I think Buffy was more Vampir-esc where as Hex seems to more angled at Witchcraft type side of it.
As for the comment about the music, I actually love the rock type music in the show. Its got alot of up and coming artists in their and the main theme was performed by the very well known band "Garbage" who are great as far as I am concerned.
I am a little bit miffed about the fact they have decided to only air 5 episodes. I mean will this give us time to really get into a show like this?

Well Tc
J

They only made 5 episodes so I expect the storyline is geared to that amount with the obvious hooks/plot points required to expand if a second season/batch is required.

It was just a mini series. I guess if the ratings are good they might make a longer run series.

I've read somewhere that they've already decided to make a 2nd series based on the viewers ratings on the 1st prog, not sure how true this is tho ?? I have to admit that I never watched Buffy so can't compare the two - but I'm enjoying this

Hi,

Well, I watched the second episode last night on Sky Mix, and it's definitely got an extremely favourable chance of going to a second series!

The episode was full of wonderfully witty/pithy one-liners betwen Thelma and Cassie, on Thelma's life in the after-life! And the story's moving along nicely too. I think this should become a minor hit for Sky One, and British fantasy drama as well!

How nice to see a genuinely high-quality fantasy/horror show, that is as good as stuff the US churns out!

Watched the first ep. and really didn't think that much of it, but thought I'd give it a second chance so watched ep.2, really wish I hadn't as I found it soooo slow and ponderous. Dull as ditch water IMO.

The only comparison to Buffy would be the buffy film and then only in as such that both are pretty poor viewing.

Dull, dull, dull. Far too slow. Episode 2 and no real plot developed yet. Juvenile sexual references. Absolute garbage. Give it a wide berth.

I have watched the first two, and that is enough for me.

The plot is plodding along at a snails pace and everything seen in Hex has been done many times before in many different programmes (and done much better).

Thought the first episode was quite good, but the 2nd seemed to fly by with nothing actually happening. As it is just a 5 episode series, I would have thought the plot would move a bit quicker.

Is this program worth watching. It seems to be described in the same vain as "the Prophecy" series of films Christopher Walken stared in and if that's the case I'd be interested. If it's watered down PG rubbish though I'll probably give it a miss. (I've got the 1st two epsiodes on tape but have yet to watch them btw)

I have to admit I have not seen this but after reading this thread it sounds like nothing more than a poor Buffy clone. I thought that Hex was going to be a proper series not five episodes, it's hardly worth bothering about.

From what I can tell the similarities between Buffy and Hex are:

Attractive teenagers in school dealing with the occult and all things supernatural.
Plenty of relatively unknown rock bands used for the soundtrack.
The Angel similarities (rather uncanny!)
Isn't there a lesbian best friend or something as well?

No that doesn't sound like Buffy in the slightest does it * sarcasm *

All you need now is for the girl to have a singular destiny to be "the chosen one" or something

So is it worth me going back to the beginning and watching all of Buffy? I know someone who has it all on DVD....

I must admit to enjoying Hex but some of the recent postings suggest that its not the same standard - I'm probably only enjoying it cos i've got nothing to compare it to!
