I've seen this on a few shows, a US thing. Its so you're captive when they play it.
Advert breaks between shows don't get as many viewers because it a tea break/toliet stop or whatever, 5 minutes in and you'll stay put. Twenty minutes in it another break opportunity.
The thing that gets me with this is that the viewer directly pays to watch sky , fair enough with ITV they rely on advertyising revenues .

Sky One did this on the new Simpsons last sunday, but they only had the one ad just at 5 mins in.

Over a 24 hour period you do.
A small loop hole allows broadcasters to bias their ad breaks and duration in timeslots that they see fit while reducing the adverts in off peak time.

Personally I would be happy if SKY got rid of the final ad break in a 1 hour timeslot, come back from the break for 2 minutes of programming and the end credits (which are then talked over).

I'm sure the ad breaks are getting longer, every time I switch over to UKGold there are adverts on, well 9 times out of 10 there are anyway.

Perhaps you channel surf during an ad break and most of the other channels sync their breaks with eachother and it can look like a whole EPG full of advert channels

Usually they sync with programmes with adjacent channel numbers, so to avoid them move quite a way from the progamme you are watching and you've a chance of channel surfing whilst avoiding adverts. (this is what I was told by a marketing guy)
