I'm not expecting much of Asimov's work to survive the translation from book to film intact. It's probably more accurate to describe "I, Robot" as being 'inspired by' Asimov's fiction than it being a direct adaptation.

In fact, isn't it the case that the basis for this movie was an unrelated SF script titled "HardWired" which by some chain of events eventually became the movie we'll be seeing down our local multiplex in a couple of weeks?

I'm trying not to think of this flick as an Asimov adaptation at all, and I'm preferring to think of it as a big, dumb action flick in SF drag, with the Artist Formerly Known As The Fresh Prince duking it out with nifty CG robots. On that basis, I'm sure that it will be a fine, and hopefully surround-mungous, evening's entertainment...

Saw this last night* and loved it. Some of the effects were awesome with some dazzling camera work, gratuitous use of slow-mo's and some comedy thrown in for good measure. Will Smith I thought was good.

I for one can't wait to see it in the cinema or on DVD.

*yes it was a copy. I do not condone piracy in any way blah blah....

if will smith could just for once forget the whole "OH DAMN" or any ebonics keeping it real mtv base dictionary under his afro his films would be far more watchable.like has already been said its just will smith playing will smith and with the exception being ALI the fella is a one trick pony who can actually do a decent bit of acting when forced.

I don't like Asimov's work, but this movie was very good. There are many well-thought one liners in this movie. Funny, with good action.

The difference between a movie star and an actor is that a movie star plays the same character in every film ie. Will Smith playing Will Smith and an actor doesn't. Dustin Hoffman or Tom Hanks are more like actors because they sometimes play characters that are completely different to themselves ie Rainman or Forrest Gump.

It's got nothing to do with Asimov: the film-makers' didn't even have the rights to the book, just the title.

I certainly don't remember any motorcycle chase in the book. Then again, Asimov's prose and narrative were so uninspiring any dynamics added would probably be a good thing.

Try reading any of the Foundation books to see what I mean; tedioussssssssss....

Someone posted a link to the site on here & it was impressive. It has inclined me to try the film. The trailers however have not. I'm sure I'll see it when I get around to it.

I've just seen this too, and was actually quite surprised. I thought it was good and definately one to see as opposed to the usual summer blockbuster drivel.

However it felt abit like an episode of Scooby Doo with the following clues bit but I thought Smith was Ok and didn't portray his usual 'Bad Boys' self.

Ive just seen I-Robot this afternoon and thought it was poor at the start, good in parts in the middle, but had a very good last third. Which is a shame because if they had of extended story that transpires in the last third of the movie it would of made it worth buying on DVD.

I enjoyed it, but ... how come NO ONE brings up the fact that Bridget Moynahan (spelling?) was horrible beyond horrible. I'm sure even I could do a better job, and that really is not saying much.

Aside from that, I liked the Sonny aspect of the story And I loved the final scene, very breathtaking.

i quite enjoyed I, Robot. Yes it's supposed to be the movie adaptation of a deep and thought provoking novel about the dangers of allowing technology to take over our lives, but we already know how successful a movie that makes with the drawn out, occasionally great, most often dull A.I. and more recently the badly realised Godsend, so it was right in my opinion for them to take this in another direction. The action is intense and the storyline interesting, and i've always been a fan of the "will smith" character, so i wasn't disappointed.

My favourite "Summer Blockbuster" for a long time

Excellent action sequences, great concept, cracking special effects, and even a good storyline with a twist!

more more can you want...ok, so reminded me of Bicentennial Man in places and I couldn't help thinking that if it had been a lot darker it could have been a truly great sci-fi movie. But top notch all the same.

Will be sliding straight into my dvd collection between ID4 and Armageddon.

Better than expected, sci-fi blockbuster with a bit of depth and adequate/variable special effects.
Very annoying product placement. Audi or Converse anyone?

I saw this last night. As has been said previously, much better than I expected! It certainly had good action scenes

SPOILER

Liked the bionic arm element too - when he's fighting the NS5 in the tunnel and he punches into the tarmac floor...

Another good shot was when his police chief uses the shotgun in his office to shoot the robot through the glass partition

Had a not too shabby twist for a popcorn movie either!

Watched the movie last night and as a long time fan of Asimov and his novels I was expecting the worse but it wasn't a bad attempt although I had to put aside my slight objections to Hollywoods mix and match approach to the plot.
I certainly didn't picture Susan Calvin looking like that either

Quite pleasantly surprised

I saw this last week and was quite surprised how good it was. Sonny the robot steals the show to a certain extent, but he's not quite in the same league as Gollum. Will Smith was quite subdued (moody even?). Nothing like the characters from Bad Boys or MIB, if that is what you are expecting.

There is also some 'in yer face' product placement, which seems to happen quite a lot in Sci-Fi

I just wish Hollywood would stop the Happy, Sappy endings. I much prefer open-ended films, rather than all wrapped up with a ribbon on top.

Definitely Will Smith's best action flick so far. I would pay to see it again.

Hi,

Saw this sunday, and it was edge of the seat stuff.

Shame it was not darker, and will smith was not in it.

Spoiler

The tunnel sequence was amazing, but spoilt by the typical smith one liners whilst fending them off, this should have been a very frightening sequence as robots do not attack humans, and for 20 or more to do this to him, he should of been really scared.

But then it is aimed to be a summer blockbuster , so darker settings go out, and a big name is needed as a central figure.

But up there with spidy 2 in terms of entertainment. Loved the camera work!.

Def one to get on dvd.

rai

It's not a bad film if you take it for what it is. Has very little to do with Asimov apart from the three laws, some films need to have a name attached to give it gravitas.

Saw it this morning.

Quite brilliant.

Good story, great visual effects, well directed.

Even the two leads, who we were led to believe were terrible, were pretty good; playing their roles fittingly. Smith wasn't in his "DAAAMN!" character which helped a lot.

It also didn't get overly preachy & prententious like some films which have treaded in similar ground.

Go see it.

Dustin Hoffman or Tom Hanks are more like actors because they sometimes play characters that are completely different to themselves ie Rainman or Forrest Gump.

Thats complete crud. Ok if we were measuring the range of acting skills between actors then yes, but I mean seriously if the actor can fulfil the role of the person he/she is playing then they are a good actor. Yes the better actors are ones who can play varied roles which may be harder to nail but it doesn't make other actors bad for choosing easier roles.

more like actors???
