Jerry Goldsmith is dead

Just read on another forum that the great film composer Jerry Goldsmith has died, aged 75. Very sad news.

He was a true talent and had written some of the most memorable and effective film scores ever. Off the top of my head, here are some of my personal favourites...

Capricorn One
Star Trek: The Motion Picture
Alien
Planet of the Apes
Legend
Under Fire
Chinatown
The Mephisto Waltz
Gremlins
Twilight Zone: The Movie
Psycho II
Poltergeist
The Omen
L.A. Confidential

He'll be sadly missed.

I’m very close to tears myself he was my favourite composer and will be going through my collection tonight I hope they decide to re-release some of his yet un- release works on CD especially Capricorn One and vastly under rated score for Escape From The Planet of Apes

If you’re interested I have done an obituary for him here and started a thread on him here for his 75th birthday here.

I know a few other members will be gutted as well Lex to name one.

Hi,

Just to add my condolences, and some extra information I've garnered.

Goldsmith passed away, yesterday evening - 21st July 2004 - after a long battle with Cancer. Obviously, my heart goes out to his family, relatives and friends, of whom I know he had many! He was certainly a prolific composer, and has composed some of the most memorable film scores ever committed to audio! Who can forget the terrifying score to "The Omen"?!

Film will never be the same without him.

R.I.P. Mr Goldsmith!

Yes, absolutely gutted.

I always looked forward to his new scores - it is sad to think that there will not be anymore... I like you Garrett hope they take this opportunity to release/re-release his back catalogue.

Medicine Man was on TV earlier, one of his greatest scores imho.

Sad when anyone dies, but especially when theit talent has been enjoyed by so many. I feel even more fortunate now, that i attended a concert of his a number of years back, at the Barbican.

Can't believe it.

Again I saw him at the Barbican twice - always seemed so youthful and a joy to listen to, both for his music and his chats to the audience.

Will, for me, be one of the greats of film scoring. 'The Omen', 'Alien' and 'Star Trek -TMP' are scores very close to my heart.

Rest in peace Jerry.

One of Jerry’s scores is used in a movie tonight Deep Rising although not one of his best it still isn’t bad.
I quite enjoyed the film as well and it stars Famke.

My favourite film composer as well as the films mentioned i think The Wind and The Lion, Rambo, Total Recall ( he described it as one of his favourites ) The Mummy, First Knight, Rudy, Extreme Prejudice, Legend, The Ghost and The Darkness and Basic Instinct were superb. and of course he did the man From U.N.C.L.E and Twilight Zone tv theme tunes.

Many others too and i loved his Star Trek Nemesis soundtrack which was better than the film deserved.

Yes The 13th Warrior is on now I haven’t seen it before but I have heard it is not up to much, but spotted Jerry’s work straight away.
Good or bad be the films, we still have his work.

I quite enjoyed 13th Warrior - not a classic by any means, but an enjoyable romp...

Jerry did the score for it at the same time as The Mummy. Both very similar, both very good

That’s how I spotted it before his name came up on the titles. He did seem to carry some themes over from one film to an other although different, similar. (and I was playing The Mummy DVD the night before).
Haven’t watched the last bit of the film yet just got 45 minutes to go.

Nothing much wrong with '13th warrior' imo. I didnt realise Mr Goldsmith did the score, which is odd, as i've probably seen it 3 or 4 times over the years. If you intend watching it, make sure you see the widescreen version, as the battle scenes are quite busy.
