after giving up on it myself after about 5 episodes my ladyfriend talked me into watching the rest of it in one sitting and I have to admit, the last half of the series did pull things together with an interesting through-line where they've established a "bigger picture" of what's been going on. We've got the last episode to watch tonight and it's got me interested in it again, enough to at least
start watching season 2. It's not quite as light weight now as when it first started but I still feel it was really floundering until
... it still hasn't grabbed me enough to remember everyones character names though

apart from Jake, I still find him really annoying. And it's still easy to predict what's going to happen once you're 5 mins into each episode, but the big picture they've established is actually quite interesting to watch unfold.
I guess they felt the audience needed a few episodes to ground themselves, and to establish the characters and their behaviour patterns before starting to feed us the meatier stuff. But if the first half had been like the second half's turned out I wouldn't have stopped watching it
