I had to laugh the other day when I read that ITV had decided not to screen series 3 of Dexter.

It's probably the best show that's been on ITV for years and yet it seems they'd rather continue with all the rubbish telly they put out nearly all the time.

What does it say about the tv execs who can't recognise a programme of genuine quality ?

Or what does it say about ITV's viewers as presumably it's being scrapped because the audience was too low.

Best just stick to Ant and Dec, X-Factor and the soaps I suppose, that's what keeps the majority happy.

The consolidation into ITV plc and lowest common denominator programming has probably lost them so many viewers who in the past would have eagerly watched a quality Granada production, World In Action/This Week report, or Survival special (from Anglia Television) .. these viewers all expect reality/celeb cack on it these days, so understandably stay away

It's no suprise that many quality programmes they now make under the ITV Productions banner are sold to other broadcasters.

All previous series of Dexter are being aired on FX in the run-up to the new season. Starts this week IIRC.

Unfortunately I rely on subtitles to aid my tv viewing and FX doesn't accomodate them

Will probably shell out for the US release (~£20) when I get a suitably timed window of opportunity to watch the whole lot marathon stylee.

Not sure I'd call FX a proper channel. An ugly big logo which is now no longer even placed in the corner but far closer to the centre to be 4:3 safe is not my idea of a proper channel.

FX is IMO a proper channel when compared to ITV. FX has a proper HD offering for starters .


The reason the FX logo has moved is FX is now 16:9, previously as it was 4:3 the image was stretched moving the logo artificially to the edge of a 16:9 screen.

I pay more attention to the quality of shows then the logo when judging a channel

ITV is far from a great channel and it maybe that FX treats it's shows better but there's no reason for a logo in the first place so the excuse for an even worse logo cuts no ice with me. I wish all the channels ITV, FX, BBC and the rest would just get rid.

As much as I'm all for bashing the TV execs at ITV, I do feel that the ITV viewers have a part to play.

Perhaps their viewers are happy to watch Emerdale/Coro and are oblivious to quality US drama.

ITV is easily the most dumbed down mainstream terrestrial channel (imo) so Dexter probably isn't the right programme for it anyway.

Only seen S1/2 so i'll probably pick them all up on BR when they're very cheap as the presentations are supposed to be very good.

I agree that ITV is the most dumbed down terrestrial channel but Sky started the dumbing down and the other channels followed. We now have all manner of things such as squashed credits while they tell you about the next "great" show to be shown next, logos, etc, etc. Non of this is conducive to great TV but the UK audience has accepted it all with little or no complaint. It's not just ITV as most channels go along with this. Britain used to produce some of the best TV in the world but the US has leapt ahead in many ways.

We need good quality TV from where ever it may come from with no distractions.

Definitely agree with all the comments about ITV being the most dumbed down terrestrial channel.
I find it amazing how FIVE has turned themselves around since their early days when they were even worse than ITV are now (showing tons of softcore porn & made for TV movies).
I wonder if maybe they could get Dexter as I think it'd fit in perfectly with their US shows.

Five improved for a while by losing the logo and improving the overall quality of what they were showing but they had a very low starting point and the logo's back! I admit I don't watch their channels but I doubt they're much if any better than ITV.

Well I mainly watch FIVE for their US imports like the 3 CSI series, the 3 Law & Order series, House, The Mentalist, Flashforward, The Shield etc, so I do find myself watching FIVE's channels quite a bit.
I have no idea what the quality of their self produced output is like though

Ther only reason I stopped watching on FX to begin with was the FX poor aspect ratio, at least that been sorted ( but its caused other problems, really fx, widescreen tv have been out for more than a decade, how many sat equipped homes still don't have one?) ,

True Blood was in 16:9 widescreen on FX HD last year and the logo was in the corner but this year it isn't so it's nothing to do with it having been in 4:3.

It's because they had two separate feeds last year whereas now they only have one so the logo has been moved almost into the centre.

Five's logo is actually fairly subtle compared with most channels. The ones on FiveUSA & Fiver are a bit OTT though.

& Five has an excellent selection of US imports. Most of which are treated with a fair amount of respect. Shame they dropped House though...

Back to ITV: They've never known what to do with US imports, going back to the days of Millennium. They bought all 3 seasons, thinking it was going to be a massive hit like The X-Files, stuck it on in prime time on a Sunday night & then gradually started showing it later & later until season 2 was broadcast early Monday mornings. They didn't even bother showing Season 3!

More recently, Entourage was bounced around the ITV2 schedules to make way for ******* Katie & Peter & X-Factor reruns, & they sat on Season 4 of The Office for TWO AND A HALF YEARS before finally starting to show it last month on ITV4.

Indeed. & they finally got round to showing it after the end of season 2, which made perfect sense!

Better than not showing it at all I guess. I was mad as hell when they dropped the episode and I had the Blu-Ray by the time they decided to spoil us by broadcasting it.

Totally agree about Dexter, it is a superb, very well thought out show, and every episode i have seen so far(only seen first 2 seasons) has had me gripped.
It was never promoted nearly well enough by ITV, and was put on in too late a time slot IMO. The result being that many people would have missed it.

This decision will not have any effect on me though, because although i watched the first season on ITV, the second was on DVD, as will all future seasons be.
