Couple of surprises, I thought. One was that LOTR didn't get nominated for Best Cinematography. The other was that the Matrix sequels didn't get nominated for either sound or visual effects.

Why didn't City of God get nominated for best picture!

One of the best films I have ever seen (not as good as LOTR though!)

I hope Lost in Translation wins best picture - that would be really great

LOTR overhyped a little bit with the 3rd film

Hi,

Well, this is what I think will win, from this years list of nominees.

ACTOR IN A LEADING ROLE
Bill Murray - LOST IN TRANSLATION

ACTOR IN A SUPPORTING ROLE
Benicio Del Toro - 21 GRAMS

ACTRESS IN A LEADING ROLE
Keisha Castle-Hughes - WHALE RIDER
(N.B. Is she the youngest nominee ever, because I thought Anna Paquin was, when she won her award for "The Piano" back in 1993?)

ACTRESS IN A SUPPORTING ROLE
Holly Hunter - THIRTEEN

ANIMATED FEATURE FILM
THE TRIPLETS OF BELLEVILLE / BELLEVILLE RENDEZ-VOUS

ART DIRECTION
GIRL WITH A PEARL EARRING

CINEMATOGRAPHY
CITY OF GOD

COSTUME DESIGN
THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING

DIRECTOR
THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING
(It may not be the best directed film in the category for 2003/2004, but what Peter Jackson has done, has to be given some kind of cinematic credence!)

DOCUMENTARY FEATURE
CAPTURING THE FRIEDMANS

DOCUMENTARY SHORT SUBJECT
FERRY TALES

FILM EDITING
CITY OF GOD

FOREIGN LANGUAGE FILM
THE BARBARIAN INVASIONS

MAKEUP
THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING

MUSIC (SCORE)
THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING

MUSIC (SONG)
"The Triplets of Belleville" - THE TRIPLETS OF BELLEVILLE

BEST PICTURE
THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING

SHORT FILM (ANIMATED)
DESTINO

SHORT FILM (LIVE ACTION)
DIE ROTE JACKE (The Red Jacket)

SOUND
THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING

SOUND EDITING
PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: THE CURSE OF THE BLACK PEARL

VISUAL EFFECTS
THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING

WRITING (ADAPTED SCREENPLAY)
MYSTIC RIVER

WRITING (ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY)
LOST IN TRANSLATION

What do the rest of you think? I haven't seen a lot of these films, so my choices have been made on my own knowledge of the films themselves, general reviews (both from critics, the internet, and the public), and what I think the Academy will favour.
