an interesting spin on scifi....

Now there is a pun in the title.....

Go and watch yourself a scifi type thing with space ships in space doing what they do.....

Now..... how many times have you seen 2 spaceships in the same shot where they DONT have the same orientation up and down..... in other words up in one ship is up in the other one too.

Have a think about it and this is most likely the most unrealistic thing about any of these programs! I challenge a director to make me a film or show which has space ships coming in at all sorts ofd weird angles!

Yeh!!!!!! and they all walk on the floor and sit in chairs, how necessary is that in a no gravity situation.

Perhaps they orient the same way to avoid vertigo

That would probably make sense for ships in the same squad, flying in formation with the same horizon information. But, more likely than not, when two rival factions met, it would be at wildly different angles. Unless, of course, there was some standard space horizon built into all ship nav computers.

BTW, good memory Garrett.

In the Elite series, David Brabbam got around this by ships automatically orientating around the system they were in- that said attacks could come in at some pretty weird angles.

In Elite 2 you have pretty accurate space flight physics.
No up no down: thrusting adds vectors to your direction etc.
Pretty groovy only other game I've come across with realistic space flight is an old amiga one called warhead.

Stephen Donaldson's "Gap" series have interesting space combat situations but even thats mostly been ripped off from the merchanter series by CJ Cherhy |(sp).

A stupid example of this is in Star Trek 2, when the Enterprise and the Reliant are orbiting opposite poles of the same planet - both ships appear upright in the shot, which means the ship at the bottom of the picture is orbiting the planet upside down.

That's not the most annoying thing. The worst is the stupid sound effects of engines and weapons and everything else. You're in bloody space! It's a fricking vacuum! Just leave it out!

In space no one can hear you scream.

Ah come on. Star Wars would be way boring if space was silent.
I'm sure you could argue the sound in an average gun fight or punch up is done with a fair bit of artistic licence.

Where do you draw the line: screeching tyres on every car going around any corner regardless of whether its actually skidding or not? Infinite upwards gear changes. Pistols that sound like shotguns?
