Mark Gatiss to be one of the First Men In The Moon

Mark Gatiss is to make his own adaption of the HG Wells' novel First Men In The Moon for BBC4.

BBC - Press Office - Mark Gatiss and Rory Kinnear to star in The First Men In The Moon

It could be interesting.

Re: Mark Gatiss to be one of the First Men In The Moon

I remember our Primary 5 teacher (7 or 8 years old at the time) reading the class this story, and to me it was amazing. I was transfixed by the idea of men being on the Moon. I can still see some of the images in my head that her words created in my little peabrain at the time.

It's a quality story and a BBC adaptation of it could be something special. I hope it's as captivating as Miss Banks' story was all those years ago.

Cheers

Bless you mate.

I doubt if any TV/film version will live up to your wonderful memory. I hope it doesn't disappoint you too much.

All the very best

I'm a fan too and I'm sure he'll do thevery best he can with the available resources. I just think it won't live up to Stockholm's great memory of a wonderful recital.

Re: Mark Gatiss to be one of the First Men In The Moon

I really liked his short ghost story series, The Crooked House (?), that was on last year. I think he'll do a decent job.

As long as the BBC don't let it anywhere near the hands of whatever hooligans are responsible for the shameful raping that's been dished out to poor old Robin Hoodie and Merlin, then I'll be happy enough

I suspect Gatiss will treat this with a great deal of respect. Good or bad he'll have done his very best. It'll be worth a watch.

As I said to Sandra Bullock I don't name drop at all. Having said that I've also met Mark Gatiss but I doubt he'll remember.

Recorded this on BBC HD last night.

Absolutely brilliant. A great adaptation, and some great sfx for something made on a BBC 4 budget!

Rory Kinnear and Mark Gatiss were both great in this, and I loved the little pay-off right at the end!

At times the sfx looked first class but as other times they showed the production had a low budget, probably. I wondered if the goods shots came via Dr Who.

I enjoyed the 2 leads and had a good laugh at Gatiss. The guy from George Gently who was the lead in the last Crooked House was there as well. It was also nice to see Julia Deakin from Spaced and So Haunt me in a cameo. Likewise for Sheersmith and Pemberton.

I can imagine there'll be quite a few who wouidn't have got the references to the George Melies film A Trip To The Moon.

It's been quite a while since I saw the previous (Lionel Jeffries) incarnation of this and longer still since I read the book, so can't comment on how well an adaptation this was, but have to say I really enjoyed it. I thought both lead performances were very good especially Mark Gatiss, who I don't always buy in various other character roles I've seen him in.

Yes, a great little sequence and a very nice homage I thought.

Probably but if this was QI we'd probably get -20 points.

It was nice that they dedicated this to the late Lionel Jeffries. I don't think I've read the book. War Of The Worlds The Time Machine and one or two others but not this.
