No bass on Jules Holland on BBC HD

I'm currently watching last nights Jules Holland off my Sky HD box with the Sky output set to Dolby Digital.
My AV-Receiver shows an input of 5.1, but the LFE channel is silent.
The whole sound is 'thin' no matter how I set the output on my AV-R. I've tried telling it not to use the sub in 5.1 and also to only output stereo. The only way I can get bass is to go into the Sky settings and set the optical output to 'Normal'. This way my AV-R receives a stereo signal which sounds much better.
All my speakers are set to large as they are full range speakers, and the auto calibration set them this way. I have no problems with DD on Sky movies and other HD channels, even the occasional 5.1 track on MTV HD sounds great. It just seems to be Jules Holland on BBC HD, other programs on BBC HD work fine with the LFE channel.
I noticed this issue to a lesser extent with the last season of Jules Holland. The Sub was silent but the sound wasn't overly 'thin'.
Have any of you good folks noticed anything similar or is it some peculiarity of my set up?

It could have been an error made by the BBC

Re: No bass on Jules Holland on BBC HD

I have just watched my recording of Jools Holland from 25th (with that incredible "three guys at two pianos" Boogie Woogie sequence).

It sounded fine (not thin).

My amp reported normal Dolby Digital.

All speakers seemed to be working throughout.

I made a specific attempt on a couple of occasions to "stick my head" in my sub woofer ... I can report that it was producing appropriate noises.

Regards

Sorry, Rich. The sound on 'Later with...' has been exceptional for me - some of the best on TV. I think you might need to check your set-up :-(

Re: No bass on Jules Holland on BBC HD

The sound is much much better this week, My sub is still not activating but much more bass seems to be going to the other speakers.

There was possibly something strange in the broadcast last week that my system was particulary vulnerable to...

This week I still get more bass setting my sky box to a stereo digital output but the sound quality is significantly lower. I'm guessing that the DAC in my AV-Receiver is better at sound manipulation than that of the sky box.

I have a better set up for stereo than AV, so forcing stereo generally gives me better results with music. Once I told my AV-R to only output stereo via my stereo amp everything was right again. Good crisp sound with balanced bass.

I still can't exactly figure out what happened last week though...
