Lord Of The Rings In HD

Not too sure if this is the correct place for such a post, but here goes anyway.

I have had Sky HD since early 2008, and have never seen any of the Lord Of The Rings Trilogy on the HD film channels.

Have they ever been shown? If so, is there any reason why they are not shown more regularly?

They are my favourite films and would really like to see them in HD

The DVDs that I have, although upscaled don't look bad, I would much rather see them in native HD. Also for some reason the 5.1 sound doesn't come out very well on the DVD, speech is too faint.

regards,

Richard

Re: Lord Of The Rings In HD

Return of the Kings was shown back in 2006 when HD first started but not sure if they have shown it again since.

If you have a Blu-Ray player or PS3 the theatrical LOTR Trilogy is out in November.

This should probably be in the HD TV Programmes forum but hey its here now. I was wondering something similar about Batman Begins, has that ever been broadcast in HD? I thought we might have got it just before the Dark Knight...

It was probably one of the Warner titles that SKY couldn't get the rights for in the early days of SKY HD, it took about a year before they finally signed a full HD deal with Warner.

Yes C4 defiantly showed them all in HD a while back. What I am waiting for is the extended edition in HD, but, prob be a long wait with the release of the theatrical version 1st. Not willing to keep buying the same thing anymore.

Funny you should say that. I was just thinking while reading this that I read somewhere a few months ago that Peter Jackson was working on the Blu-ray release of the LOTR trilogy. This tells me that the movies are being re-mastered or something for hd release.

Therefore, surly any hd broadcast of these films prior to that release must be up scaled versions.

Or have I got it totally wrong.

I remember reading somewhere that they were going to release the blu-rays earlier, but PJ wasn't at all impressed at how some of the CGI stood up in HD. Hence the remastering, etc.

No it's very very simple and comparatively cheap to take a 35/70mm master of a movie and scan it into a computer and produced a HD master for broadcasting.
Alas a lot of catalogue Blu titles are done this way and we get so-so Blu-ray releases so it's always great news to hear about a studio or director remastering and restoring a movie prior to a HD release or re-release.

Re: Lord Of The Rings In HD

There are already HD masters out there, as the whole trilogy has been shown in HD on television in difference countries.

Lord Of The Rings looks stunning in HD... doesn't need any work doing to it. I would say the delay on the Blu-ray versions is due to the legal proceedings currently going on over profits.

Re: Lord Of The Rings In HD

I think this one will be in HD even though the epg doesnt mention it.

Ive set it to record and the planner says 10% memory required. Sounds like an HD broadcast.

Well hopefully anyway...........

No they don't. A 60 minute non hd programme takes about 1% whereas a 60min HD programme takes 4-5%. Well it does on my SkyHD box anyway.

The bit rate on an HD channel doesn't change when they show SD stuff it still has the high bitrate so the same high space.

Yes, I agree there, perhaps I misread the previous comment as I thought the comparison was between an SD channel programme and a HD channel programme, but re reading it I can see was probably about an SD programme on a HD channel.

Re: Lord Of The Rings In HD

I sent an email to Channel 4 asking if the showings of the LOTR films over the next few weeks were going to be in HD or not and I got this response:

Quote:
These programmes will not be broadcast in HD and looking at previous
broadcasts of the films they have never been broadcast in HD. Please be
assured that your comments have been logged and noted for the information of
those responsible for our programming. We are sorry for any disappointment
caused.
As someone mentioned earlier in the thread I remember Channel 4 showing these films before. I even have vague memories of them doing a promo showing the 4HD logo specifically. Does anyone know of any proof that Channel 4 did show these in HD before?

There wont be any proof because they have only shown these once before since 4HD started broadcasting and theyre still on my Sky box.
