Recommend me a show

Hi

After finishing watching Harper's Island yesterday, and awaiting the arrival of my Twin Peaks Gold Box, I'm looking for some more 'surreal' and 'out there' mystery shows (not your basic Police Procedural or Whodunnit).

I'm looking for a show that asks lots of questions without giving away all of the answers straight away (much like Lost, although I've already seen all five seasons and am now awaiting the final season).

So is there anything else out there in the same style as the shows I've mentioned? Or is there anything else you can recommend?

Thanks for your help.

Regards,
D3

X-Files or Fringe.

Was Harpers Island any good?

Re: Recommend me a show

Invasion was a cracking show, a bit too slow for some, but revealed a good plot over the series. Sad to see it got canned, but IIRC, this led to a good season conclusion.

Supernatural has been reasonably good at this too, but is far more light hearted.

Re: Recommend me a show

Yeah, I enjoyed Harper's Island, turned into a slasher style show a bit too soon but it was good to see something different for a change, instead of the same, re-used ideas for shows these days. Definitely worth a watch.

Edit: Is Carnivale any good? That looks a bit 'surreal' and weird.

I was going to add Carnivale, but I couldn't get into it, however, I believe it was well received by those that did

Re: Recommend me a show

As others have said:

X-Files
Fringe
Invasion
Supernatural

Battle-star Galactica

A six episode Mini Series - The Lost Room

Day Break - Canned but what there is of it is good.

Doll House and My Own Worst enemy are also good and worth trying.

i couldnt disagree more strongly with the idea that harpers island is worth a watch. i tried and tired yet just gave up. plays more like a long drawn out overlong tedious slasher movie (still if those sort of films float your boat then i am sure you would love it) with characters that are so close to the stereotype you want to kill them slowly yourself.

+1 for the xfiles which if you havent seen yet should be at the very top of your list.

+1 also for the lost room. cracking little mini series that should have been given a run.

Re: Recommend me a show

I want The X-Files but I'm not willing to pay £127 (which seems to be the lowest price at the moment) considering Amazon usually reduce the prices of all box sets around Christmas time. It was at about £70-£80 this past Christmas and I was going to buy it but never got round to it.

That sums it up quite well but if you can accept the religious mythology underpinning the story of a battle between good and evil via human proxies in the great depression you'll be in for a treat.

Alas a bit of a cliffhanger ending when it was cancelled.

you could always get a free trial with lovefilm or tesco and just rent it. the trials last about 2-3 months which should give you plenty of time to crack through em all.

Dexter might be worth a look if you haven't already seen it. Not quite as per your original description but it seems we have similar tastes in TV and I loved Dexter I have Twin Peaks sitting here ready to get back into, can't wait I remember watching it when I was about 13 and being absolutely captivated. Most of it went over my head although I am not expecting that to change too much 2nd time around

I watched the first few episodes of Dexter about a year ago now I think. I enjoyed them but I think I was waiting to buy the DVD of the first season which is why I didn't watch any more at the time.

I actually decided to go with Carnivale, as the concept of the show just looks very intriguing and strange and it has been something I have wanted to watch for a while now. Something about a travelling circus/carnival in the 1930's dustbowl US seems very compelling.

I'm also going to check out Wild Palms eventually, and I've heard that another couple of shows are similar to Twin Peaks, Point Pleasant and Kingdom Hospital, but I've not seen any of either of those so I have no idea what they are like.

I haven't actually seen any of Twin Peaks yet but I'm a big David Lynch fan (my favourite film probably being Eraserhead) so I think I'm going to enjoy it. I also have the film for when I have finished watching the TV show so I have seen everything in the Twin Peaks series then.

Woah woah woah !

You haven't actually seen TP yet ??!!?? Then you are in for a treat ! If you enjoy trying to decode stuff yourself then this is the bench mark show. Disturbing, Sexy, Confusing, Funny...wowser.....its literally got the lot.

Listen. You should start a thread saying you are about to start from the beginning again. I will start it at the same time as it will be nice to have someone going over it at the same pace. I bet we will get a few others join in too.

.

Point Pleasant was a little too teen america but Kingdom Hospital wasn't too bad being adapted by Stephen King himself.

I created a Twin Peaks thread last Thursday, it should be on the second page. I'm still waiting on the box set to arrive though which should be next week some time I think as it's coming from the US.

True Blood has just started on FX. First episode was great and it is repeated on Thursday before the 2nd episode on Friday!

I'd certainly seconds those.

I love Trueblood as well...can't get enough of it.

Kings isn't really weird but is fab...didn't realise it was canned

Kyle XY is weird. I watched the first series and quite enjoyed it although I've lost interest at the mo.

A friend has recommended Reaper to me. Looks a funny vampire thing. Could be worth a watch.

As much as I love Entourage it's got absolutely nothing to do with the OP's request

Carnivale is very weird but it is excellent when it gets going, plus it has got the same midget that was in Twin peaks in it
