Who do you think you are?

First episode with Davina McCall was very interesting. One side off her family history was tragic, and the other, french, more positive.

Re: Who do you think you are?

I can't believe them crying about stuff that happened to total strangers hundreds of years ago just because they have a tentative family connection. Loved Davina talking French though.

So in 50 years time it would be wrong for someone to cry because they learn't that a relative was in WW1 or 2?

I'm not sure about it being "wrong" but I have to agree it's bit silly.

I really doubt that many people would feel that emotional; certainly the girls at my work thought Davina was being a ridiculous attention seeker.

Re: Who do you think you are?

Nearly all these past stories are quite emotional and not many cheery ones, but i guess that has to do with going back so far in times when things were tough.

The Chris Moyles one 2 weeks ago was good.

The best for far was this weeks look back at Kate Humble's family history. She found out some amazing things about her family past on her fathers and mother side to be proud off. If you have an interest in WWII and The Great Escape, the 2nd half is a good watch.

3/6 - Kate Humble

Repeated again on Tuesday 4th August, 7pm BBC2

or

BBC iPlayer - Who Do You Think You Are?: Series 7: Kate Humble

Re: Who do you think you are?

Part of me likes the show
- when it's people I like such as Fry and Paxman (can't be arsed with the likes of Davina McTwat)

But part of me still thinks it's another frickin' self-indulgent celeb jerk-off

Everybody has an interesting family tree if you follow the interesting branches and forget the boring ones; we all have heroes and villains in our families

What if it was more like the Miller & Armstrong sketch?

Re: Who do you think you are?

TV is absolutely full of people crying these days.

If its not this show, its cookery programmes like Masterchef, or Young Dumb and Living off Mum.

And most of them are men!!

Big jesse's.

WDYTYA is a bit of a guilty pleasure for me as I generally make a point of avoiding any show which is sold on its "celebrity" value but I do often tune in if it's someone I am familiar with.

Seems not everyone has an interesting family tree as apparently they research about a dozen celebrities for each series before whittling it down to 6, though Michael Parkinson is the only one to come out and admit his famiy history is boring afaik:

Michael Parkinson: My family was too dull for Who Do You Think You Are? | Media | guardian.co.uk

I wonder if any celebs were excluded because of the sordid nature of their ancestors

Really enjoyed the episode with JK Rowling, wow it was very emotional for her, its aways interesting to look back in history.

Larry Lamb (Gavin & Stacey), episode was very good, he learnt so much about his mum's past family.

I might watch the Emilia Fox (Merlin) the daughter of actor Edward Fox, episode at some stage.

I enjoyed Emilia Fox tracing her family tree on WDYTYA.

Recommend watching it - without giving any spoilers it has lots of twists and turns. Also, Emilia has a delightful personality and comes across very well.

I missed the Foxy one, hope to watch it soon ... quite a family we already know, including her cousin on Lewis

EDIT ... Rai, I thought James was her old man, and Edward the dad of the bloke on Lewis (Laurence? ... Billie Piper's husband)

2nd EDIT .. I was wrong, I thought that because, to me, Laurence looks more like Edward than James

Other way round, Edward is the father of Emilia, James Fox is her uncle & father of Laurence
