Persons Unknown (US + Spoilers)

NBC has picked up 13 hours of series for Persons Unknown.

Persons Unknown is about a group of strangers who find themselves imprisoned inside a small ghost town with no knowledge of how they got there or how to get out.

The show stars Jason Wiles, most famous for his role as Bosco on NBC’s hybrid show Third Watch, here playing a character name Joe; Daisy Betts (last year’s horror remake “Shutter”); and Battlestar Galactica's Kandyse McClure will play Erica. The rest of the cast include Chadwick Boseman, Tina Holmes, Alan Smyth, Lee Purcell, and Reggie Lee.

Christopher McQuarrie (”The Usual Suspects”, “Valkyrie”) created the show, and is producing for Fox TV Studios, Italy’s RAI and Mexico’s Televisa.

No air date has been confirmed.

Been meaning to acquire the first episode but you wonder if it'll all get shown if ratings are not good even though the series is in the can.

Off to watch it now

Back

Now that was very interesting, almost what The Prisoner remake should have been.
I forgot who Bosco was now I remember and come on guys, a little miss rich girl in a skimpy outfit but isn't a looker, what a waste

Personally I think the little girl is behind it all.

Episode 1: Pilot - 7.7/10

I do enjoy 'psychological, what the hell is going on' type thrillers, having watched the film - 'Exam', the other night. So this was an interesting concept for this series with shades of The Prisoner. It wont be long before people stand turning on each other - the girl with the fortune cookie now has to make a decision, kill and be free.

Very average, one dimensional characters, half of them saying they are going to do something then just stand about for a bit again! Idea is sound but it does feel like its going to turn into the usual naff 'horror' where you are just rolling your eyes every five minutes at the decisions that are being made. Saying that will give it another chance next week

So what's Happy Town then?

Thought this pilot was good ... reminds me of The Prisoner, Saw, The Game, and Harper's Island; and Alan Ruck is always good value

Happy Town's getting good, they're burning off the remaining episodes (4-8) now and I hope there is some conclusion

if i woke up in a strange place like them, the first thing i would do is look out the window, and if i felt like i was locked in a place and spotted the cameras, i would pull out the cable and smash the camera. they didn't look at the hotel name and address etc on the fire marshal card on the door either

and when they found the implants, they checked each other, but when they "held up" the chinese folk, they didn't if they had implants either, they didn't check if the shotgun had ammo after being returned to them. i would have destroyed all the cameras i came across, held the chinese guys hostage, heated up the kitchen knifes to remove the implants, made some food, and then got someone to see if they could leave with the van and the implants removed, with a chinese person as hostage tied up in the van. likewise no attempt to hold the night porter hostage or question him properly

and to set of a fire alarm, who the hell would get two bits of wood and start rubbing them together? even if you didn't have a lighter or match, surely you would use a broken lightbulb or heater or something?

I wouldn't be any good then, as I have no idea how to start a fire using a broken lightbulb.

BTW did anyone else think the picture quality was very poor? This was bad even for NBC.

I tend to watch the SD resolution versions so PQ is rarely spectacular but it did look very stylised but I would have to grab a HD sourced HD copy to confirm which I can do right now and get back to ya

The HD cap has a very video look to it but far from being bad, perhaps the cap you have was taken from an inferior affiliate feed or simply poorly re-encoded.

Episode 2 done....meh! They deserve everything they get, they are so bloody stupid!

1) Stay together at all times then things can't start appearing in rooms etc
2) You have a van...erm, try again people! You went one way once!
3) You have a gun...if you aren't going to use it on the bloke don't waste all the bullets shooting a camera to make a point!
4) The blonde has fine legs!
5) 'Talk' to the night porter again idiots!!!! How did he make it through the "we used it in Iraq for crowd control' fence?!
6) Should have made notes as I was watching!!

As I mentioned after the first episode on another forum, sound idea but waaaay too many roll eye moments.

the obviously have the internet in the village as they used some of my ideas in this episode

they still don't have the brains to try and drive the van through the pain gun thing and see if that works, or use a stick to find out where the perimeter is, instead of using bare hands

and if the people who put them there have the money for the setup and to have the cameras replace themselves, you would have thought they could have put more than one camera in the room, either hidden so they can't see them, or have an obvious camera to distract from the hidden ones

and the "prisoners" talk openly about the plans with cameras about the place, instead of going outside or being subtle. they aren't even that stupid on big brother

in saying that, i'm quite enjoying this show. i bet it gets cancelled after episode 5 and we never get to find out anything

Yeah I enjoyed the second episode as well but I'm treating it like a low budget "B" movie in which the characters do all the wrong things and you really don't cheer any of them on

I mean killing someone on camera would not have allowed to love happily ever after and the most disturbing part was the granny putting the jigsaw in the bin and saying we'll have a chat later

From what I have read the season is in the can, as to it staying on air in the US for it's full run well that's a totally different kettle of fish.

Episode 2: The Edge - 7.5/10

Im not sure about this show, the bit when they came back into the village after driving off in the van just seemed like it needed dialogue, and it felt incomplete and flat.

So the ADS are camouflaged, so they cant destroy them yet...
can't drive out as the white light is transporting them back to the village.

I wished the woman with gun saved the bullets!, she could not even shoot the camera with 4 shots.

Its not the best scripted show, feels cheap with no craft, seems to lack any tension which a show like this should have, the show feels weird, maybe thats the point, everything is not as it appears. But im still intrigued and look forward to the next episode.

cdm22 - point 4, i spotted those lovely pins too Though i thought she was a bit loopy to expose herself to the camera.

No one here has pointed out that when the saw the night porter again his face didn't look like it had recently been beaten up! Makes me wonder if that guy really doesn't have a clue what is happening and a time travel loop is involved. The same kind of loop might explain them driving back into town. The shops and the clothes found have a 50s vibe to them.
I can only assume that he managed to get through the sheild due to him not being as important to the whole thing and he would be recaptured and replaced anyway.

More in-fighting between the group as they suffer a problem with gas.

Ok the tunnel was a little bizarre but I suppose if the "outsiders" are letting the gang do their thing only to pull the rug at the last second it's reasonable they did a passable Colditz or Paint Your Wagon impression

The little bits leaking out about the characters and if we are to take the final scene at face value those in the real world added a lot more weight to the story which it needed but I'm still wondering if they will resolve it well in such a short space of time.

Episode 4: Exit One - 7.9/10

Good episode and the first reveal who is involved in the project!
not that the two gave anything way in the freezer.

Plus i hope the leggy babe comes back with her head still intact!

Out of interest, what made you up your original rating of 7.7/10 to 7.9/10?

I thought it was a good episode - I can still only see him as Bosco though!

I noticed on the email notification that Rai had originally given it 7.7/10 but in the thread it said 7.9/10. I just wondered what constituted a .2 increase

Sometimes i change the rating a few seconds or hours later, when i had a better think or after a rewatch, i have no answer why it jumped by .2, it was just a feeling

I agree with everyone here, its very much like a horror movie full of idiots. Thats down to the script and directing but you still want to rip there heads off yourself. Im 4 episodes in an overall i would rate the show a 6 so far.
