The SKY channels are littered with either road wars, street wars, Police interceptors etc or CSI vegas, CSI NY or CSI miami OMG!! the list goes on i'm bored of it all!!!!....and SKY Movies! well this is great if you dont mind watching Die hard again or Rocky how many times are they gonna screen these films? Hello we've all seen em! where are all the films gone?

Re: TV sucks at the moment?

Dumped Sky 6 months ago got freesat HD and I am far happier. Buy DVD's as I want them and watch footie down the pub so best of all worlds. P.S. the savings on the monthly subs pays for the pub and DVD's.

Well i'm going to go against the grain and say I love TV.

If you cant find something decent to watch out of a full SKY HD package then you must be the most ultra fussy people ever.

Re: TV sucks at the moment?

Totally agree with this... I very rarely find anything on at the moment.

All the good shows(my opinion obviously) Lost, Fringe, Heroes... all finished at the same time!!

The films just seem to be on a never ending weekly loop of the same S*** !!!

After work I sit down with the missus and say "well nothing on the telly love, do you mind if I go on the 360 for a bit?"

SHE LOVES IT... NOT !!!

And because you ditched TV, your life is now so full, you spend your time on TV forums telling people you've ditched tv.

Re: TV sucks at the moment?

I've sussed it! I reckon at SKY there is just one man who sits in a small broadcasting studio, probably an old chap with senile dimension judging by the film choice this year! who just sits there everyday deciding the films SKY movies will broadcast each week?! Arrrhah!!

Is there anyone who knows this man? or perhaps works for SKY can go and check on him cos i think he's stopped breathing - its been stuck on the same ***** for months!

Re: TV sucks at the moment?

The downside of bundling catalogue titles, broadcasters get a bunch of movies for a year or so and with SKY they are repeated more (for the obvious reasons) than the same style of packaging sold to ITV or CH4.
It's financially impractical for SKY to own a movie catalogue so large that the number of repeats could be reduced to a noticable extent or to only buy rights for one showing. The long term repeat strategy also means the thousands of new subscribers every month get to see movies they have not yet seen and ultimately multichannel TV should not be viewed in the same style as the main terrestrials, pick and mix is the order of the day

On a personal note my planner is never empty but then I love movies and will watch one time and time again and if it's HD and I own the DVD then I watch it in HD again.
Of course it is the summer and all schedules tend to wind down to make sure money isn't wasted while people are outside or on holiday and for imports it hits even harder as thankfully we get content much closer to the US schedules.

Re: TV sucks at the moment?

When you think of some of the great films that would be awesome in HD... LOTR Trilogy for instance... extended editions of course!!!

The list could keep going... I've lost track of the amount of times they've shown Monty Python's: Meaning of Life over the past month!!

The meaning of life certainly isn't dull programme scheduling

I don't really understand SKY's purchasing conditions, so I guess that's a fair point... although it still makes it boring for the regular viewer

Perhaps a little harsh then with Songs of praise!

Variety is what i wanna see, and by that i mean not variety of the same old crap! i used the example previoulsy with road wars! how many different versions of this are they now? even road wars have run out of new footage so what do they do? mix it all up and call it new road wars! and for SKY movies dont get me wrong i dont mind watching repeat films i have loads litterally hundreds on DVD's but why do they play the same ones every year, over and over again? i accept its not peak season for films during the summer months but come on? i wonder how many times SKY have broadcast Die Hard this year?

Go to any Sky Movie channel and press the red button. You can then get a list of the 300 or so HD movies being shown in the next seven days.

If you don't know the titles, look them up on http://www.imdb.com and see what viewer ratings they got. You will find many gems to watch if you don't restrict yourself to 'blockbusters'.

Set to record and you'll always have something to watch!!

Re: TV sucks at the moment?

Sky movies frustrates me, they show the same films for a whole week on the premiere channel then they seem to dissapear of the face of the earth

Not familiar with this policy I thought the other week I won't bother taping "Shine a Light" as I'm sure they'll repeat it at some point the following wekk and of course that's the last I've seen of it.

basically..

just agreeing, couldnt see why i was paying all this money for a service i didnt use.. Reality tv, soaps, repeats of ****, unfunny comedies.. TV writers have really lost their edge this decade really. Nothing original about.. look at all the reboots, its just not inspiring enough to warrent me taking time on it.. Rather do things or watch things that interest me.. If tv isnt doing it, then move on..

We've just had the excellent third series of Torchwood. The brilliant Psychoville is still on. There's also the likes of Mock The Week and Eight Out Of Ten Cats. There are some very good films on Film4 as well.

Re: TV sucks at the moment?

Summer is always a bit of a drought, but the family enjoys so many quality series that it's worth the subs. I agree, if you open the EPG and scroll down the list you can keep going in despair. But if you dig a bit deeper and follow some of the excellent advice and recommendations from these forums, you'll find some absolute gems. Couple that with a PVR and you have a wealth of quality TV at your finger tips

Re: TV sucks at the moment?

I agree, there is hardly anything to watch these days. I gave up on footy and sport in general a few years ago and the movies and TV progs are rubbish these days. I'm always struggling to find something decent to watch.

I was thinking of upgrading my ageing Pan plasma TV (1024x768) to a 1080p model, but don't see the point, I wouldn't benefit from it other than viewing my stills.

I've been going to the theatre a lot more (Now THAT'S ENTERTAINMENT) and am starting to look to books and radio shows now for 'home entertainmet'.

I put it down to 'getting old' as you're more likely to have seen the same old plots or remade films/TV Progs many times before in various guises. There's only so many times you can rehash the 'seven different story lines'.
And also, there's only so many times you can do docs on ancient Egypt, Rome, Sharks and 'super constructions' etc.

Roll on 3D TV, I can hardly wait

Question Re: TV sucks at the moment?

Hi,

FWIW I used to do regular-ish "Coming Up On TV" guides for the Forums here, but stopped only because it was taking too much time in my life. However, the point I wish to make was the fact that those guides were specifically designed to show people that there WAS good stuff on TV, but you just need to look much closer at the schedules to locate it, or broaden your horizons more! I tended to focus on late-night showings of films, cult dramas, foreign and animated works too, as well as some of the more mainstream stuff.

I even picked out shows like "Slings & Arrows" which airs on Sky Arts 1 regularly - an 18-part adult, comedy drama about a troupe of slightly-deranged theatre actors, set and filmed in Canada, and starring Paul "Due South" Gross: a true gem that has never turned-up on any other channel, but was given a nice DVD boxed set release a couple of years ago, after gaining cult status!

There is almost always good material on TV, if you actually bother to look for it. Check out late night schedules on channels like Living, or daytime schedules on Zone Romantica, Zone Thriller, FX, etc, and you'll find plenty of decent stuff!

Anyone who says that there is NOTHING GOOD on TV, isn't looking closely enough, in my opinion. And also, with most of us on these Forums owning a PVR device of some kind, that should mean you have even more options than those of you who don't, because you should have a shed-load of stuff recorded that you want to watch.

Admittedly, if you don't like dramas, unusual or esoteric films, or offbeat shows, then - potentially - your choice may be much more restricted, but can those of you who own Sky HD really tell me that there is nothing at all you ever want to watch?!

At least those seven different story lines will have more depth for you.

Re: TV sucks at the moment?

Couldn't agree more with the OP.

TV has been awful for many years, and its only getting worse.

For a while the repeating of older, better programmes was novel and you would find yourself watching some things, but now when you see Fools and Horses, Top Gear etc repeated practically 24hrs a day it starts to grind on you.

People did highlight that this day would come, and its well and truly here. Remember Springsteen singing "57 channels and nothing on"? Well the US must have been ahead of us then, but we have really caught up.

SkyTV and the whole 'digital' myth sells itself on the idea of choice, and indeed future technology is all based on expanding on this, but we have all the choice we could ever need and TV is so boring. I think you can have too much choice. Do we really need TV 24/7 365days of the year? After all you have to fill it with something.

I think we would all appreciate TV more if it was to shut down for a few hours each night, and we seen less things repeated.

And on a final note, why is it that it always seems to be stuff you don't want to watch that are repeated all the time? I mean I would love to see Northern Exposure, Six Feet Under, Boys from the Blackstuff etc repeated, but never see them. Whats all that about?

Re: TV sucks at the moment?

I rarely watch TV these days, as if there are any long running dramas/comedies/sci-fi or specific television series that I want to watch I will either buy them on DVD or just watch them online as the UK is way too slow at airing stuff for me, for example One Tree Hill season six has just started airing over here, yet I watched all 24 episodes over about three days last week (I'm off on my summer holiday so have a lot of spare time, lol).

Also, I'm very impatient with shows nowadays, I can never wait for the next episode so I tend to follow the US schedule moreso than the UK one when shows are still on the air each week.

If I ever miss anything on TV I will just use either BBC iPlayer or 4OD or the specific channel's equivalent online media player to watch it so it's not that big of a deal if you miss something nowadays.

TV is Full Stop! Just like cinema, there is no originality anymore. I begrudge having to pay a licence fee to posses a TV, even if it is just to watch DVD's on.
