To be honest, I think the bigger issue is, what the hell is JC doing wearing a bodywarmer? ! ! ! !

Didn't Hammond do the drag race in the white Renault, and then they switched cars for the rest of the scene?

Re: Top gear fakery?

if you watch it again you will see that for the 'drag' race hammond in the white renault and clarkson in the green ford. then for the race around the track they swapped cars.

Re: Top gear fakery?

The British Bulldog thing was poor in my opinion. Contrived. Ok well considering everything else in TG, it was a bit *too* contrived.
I want to know when they will put the Elise SC round the track as the 1.35 for the old Elise is too far down for my liking

Not strictly related to this but did anyone notice last weeks episode.

Stephen Fry took out his iPhone, no case on it. Cue close up it has a red case, then when he puts it back into his pocket no case.

They said on the voice over during the piece that they swapped cars before the 'race'.

Not too sure why they would do that given that they were supposed to be advocating their own cars (so you'd think they'd race in their original choice of car, Clarkson Focus and Hamster Renault) but I guess it might have been put in to explain a continuity error that arose after they edited the whole article together.

As far as contriving goes, that piece was the least of TGs sins.

What, do you think that they might not actually have been firing live ammunition at him as he raced around? What a shocking revelation!

Re: Top gear fakery?

As they've repeatedly taken the **** out of anyone who thinks the show's not completely scripted, then anyone gullible enough to think any of it's real deserves to go on living in their own little world of make-believe.

Maybe they'd like to buy some bridges I've got for sale while they're at it?

I don't blame TG for making the programme they do. After all, they're in the entertainment business. It's just the muppets who think any of it's true that deserve the derission.

Regards

Mark

Re: Top gear fakery?

I have always been a really big fan of TG and have enjoyed the 'laddie' direction it has been taking over the last few years.

But they really need to sort it out because it is becoming a joke. Racing against a bloody letter for gods sake.............. Live 50 cal ammo..............

In their bid to make this a show accepted by everyone they have forgotten the people who put them there!!

Racing a letter is better than a simple road test from a to b. Its the same thing yeah, but just adds a bit of something extra, just for fun. Before they went in this direction, they used to do all the simple information stuff and viewing figures steadily declined.

Sometimes I do miss proper reviews on the latest cars produced, but super cars and live ammo more than make up for that, and I can just watch 5th gear for that anyway. Boys toys is where its at

I like the challenges the letter was a decent one but i do think they are runnning low on ideas, they seem to like the military angle tho.

Beach landing a fiesta, Racing a jet, sending the stig off a carrier ramp etc

Yes, it was a more interesting angle that saying "get a car from Scilly to Orkney in less than 'x' hours" but even there they couldn't resist fakery - the 'tracker in the envelope' gimmick was a joke. No way could it work as they were pretending it did (pinpointing location and sending it back to a computer).

"Coz its wot blokes like innit?" Top Gear styles itself as a 'show for blokes' and promptly follows any stereotype it can latch on to. It's getting more plastic with every episode and generally less entertaining.

I think that tech is readily available, we use it to track our company van from a PC, and can pull up a map and see exactly where it is anytime we want.

It does have H&S advantages, but also its not invasion of privacy when we are paying the drivers salary, its no different than knowing an office worker is at his/her desk etc....

Re: Top gear fakery?

I'm afraid it's just anothe example of the BBC dumbing down its consumer programmes. Don't get me wrong, I love TOP GEAR, James May is a king ! But it is no longer the serious consumer show it was in the days when Quentin and the others shared the set with Jezza. I'm afraid it is appealing to the lowest consumer common denominator now.THE LAD.
I used to love TOMORROWS WORLD, they dumbed that down, its the same with PANORAMA and a few other formerly 'high brow 'shows. Oh well, if thats what they have to do to keep the BBC going then fair enough, I'd rather have a dumbed down BBC than American style commercial TV where you get adds between the opening credits and the start of the show, then 5 minutes show and 5 minutes adds.....It's just not civilized

Not at all some couriers offer it you can track your box/container all over the world the boxes often use a GSM chip to relay location every X hours which is recieved by software that overlays the location onto a MAP

Directions Ltd. - Vehicle Tracking £250 box and some software. Dan track is a similar system (these systems are fitted to cash machines, heavy plant, Servers, boats, jet ski's and all sorts)

I like the fact that the program me doesn't take its self seriously and you can have a good laugh. It appeals to a much wider audience now, even the Mrs loves it. Sometimes though i wish it was like the old days with some serious reviewing, although i do enjoy the reviews.

That's a GPS tracking device on the vehicle. They were talking about a device inside the envelope which was continuously relaying position coordinates as the letter was being shipped around inside vans and planes.

Under those conditions, GPS is out so no exact fix available. Whilst on the ground you could use GSM triangulation data to get a rough fix, probably wouldn't work too well in the air though.

In short, it was just a prop so that they could show a nice picture of the location of the envelope vs the car on a map on the laptop and add to the illusion that it's some sort of actual race.
