Exclamation BBC Terminates Robin Hood

Hi,

The BBC announced today that "Robin Hood" (which has just finished its third series) is not being renewed.

In a statement, that will probably annoy many of the shows fans, the reasons given include "low viewing figures" and the fact that at the end of Series 3, the main character has been killed-off. The Beeb felt that there was no way to reasonably continue a show without its titular character... in spite of the fact that "Taggart" has been doing it successfully for many years now!

Still, I guess that leaves an extra 45 minutes each Saturday for... oooh, another inept family-oriented game-show/talent contest/makeover show, etc, etc!

While it was not great, i've seen worst million dollar films. I enjoyed it, it not like there is another program like it on tv, and now they probably replace it with a musical game show.

My 10yo thinks the TV companies have it in for him after the news about Primeval and now Robin Hood. Neither were my cup of tea (especially after 'Hana' stopped prancing around in her underwear in Primeval ), but they kept him happy early Saturday evening. I hope they come up with something better than limp wristed game shows like 'Hole in the Wall'.

This is it, the kids loved these shows, i could sit with my nieces or nephews and watch Hood, Primeval, even Demons, but they are all gone. They don't have to realistic to be enjoyable.

You mean you didn't like the high concept of that very intelligent game show and you'd rather have some drama, comedy or action?

Shame on you.

You're not serious about Demons though are you?
- even Celebrity Dung Painting with Tim Vincent and Richard Blackwood would beat that

Re: BBC Terminates Robin Hood

Good riddance. I watched a bit of the first series, but realised how bad it was very quickly. The actor playing Robin was completely wrong, and if you get the main character wrong, you ain't got a show.

Maybe they'll spend the money on something decent now.

But probably it'll be replaced by another cash in the celebrity chef's car boot sale type program.

Taggart was/is a crime show, and the lead actor died - they moved on and that was that ... the title was also originally retained in honour of McManus
... cannot really compare to having a (consistently lukewarmly/badly received) series based on one of the most well known characters from folklore, and then offing the eponymous character but not renaming the show
- ITV obviously found a way in the 80s when Michael Praed's Robin of Loxley was killed off, and then Jason Connory's new Robin of Huntingdon came along ... but he was dire and it was cancelled (Praed wasn't particularly impressive either) for financial reasons (the collapse of Goldcrest). The BBC series is way more deserving of cancellation, due to its widely perceived poor quality, great expense (in recessionary times), and having had a reasonable conclusion to the series.

Blake's 7 last two series got away with it because you could interpret the title as being about the "7" rather than Blake ... but then that was balls as original characters were killed off and replaced by others who had no connection to Blake.

Re: BBC Terminates Robin Hood

Scrapbook,

Bear with me here.
It turned out Robin was Guy of Gisburn's half brother. They also had a half sister who temporarily became sheriff of Nottingham (!).
She cut the side of Robin's neck with a poisoned knife and he went off to die on his own.

I said it was unrealistic, didn't I?

I mean, a woman sheriff, yeah right

Also the speech was too modern in that it used references that just wouldn't have been used in those days. Not that I want it to be 100% realistic, but just something like.

As for the lead, I actually thought Jonas Armstrong was a good choice. At least he could do a proper Notts/Sheffield type accent.

Exclamation Re: BBC Terminates Robin Hood

Hi,

Like many of you, I hated the show from day one, so never watched anything other than the very first episode. But, with all that said and done, there does need to be something on Saturday night TV, that young and old alike can watch, on either BBC1 or ITV1.

"Robin Of Sherwood" was - in my opinion - a very, very good version of the Robin Hood myth/story. Yes, it wasn't the best of acting by Michael Praed, but at least the show was intelligent, well-written and had some storming battle scenes/fights in it, with enough "balls" to make it worthy for adults to get their teeth into as well. The new BBC1 version of RH was dire, simply because it was a story that didn't need "modernising" to be credible or enjoyable. It was exactly about what kids of today could enjoy: namely gangs, beating other adults at their own game, coming-out on top, and beating the bad guys/gals! The really naff episode names, didn't help either. They were blinking horrific!

Personally, I think BBC1 should start doing full, uncut repeats of "Monk" on Saturday teatimes in place of "Robin Hood". A show that is funny, culty, entertaining, not too brain-straining, and not too risque or violent that kids will see something that might "upset" them, and which all adults will enjoy too. It's wasted on BBC2 on the random Saturday afternoon slots, they have given it. Ditto with "Psyche" too. That could play on Saturday teatimes on BBC1 without cuts, I would have thought. I'd love to see a complete and uncut repeat of "Due South" on Saturday evenings, although one or two of the episodes would probably still need to be edited for language, or slightly edgy and risque humour/violence.

What other suggestions do you guys have for a 40-to-45 minute long drama show, that the Beeb or ITV could air, instead of cruddy phone-in voting shows and lousy dance and game shows?

They probably did mate, but it ruined it for me and I suspect many others.

For contemporary feel, I read politically correct, something that seems to creep into everything the Beeb does these days.
And I'm the Beeb's biggest fan.

Pooch,

I really don't know mate, but I agree with the people who want decent drama for all the family, as opposed to all that celebrity/game show rubbish.

Whilst I thought it Robin was poor, it was infinitely better than most saturday evening stuff and I'm sorry it's gone really.

- Hasn't Hood this year actually replaced what would have in past years been Doctor Who? (spring/summer season); and last year there was no Hood (in it's previous autumn season slot) but Merlin instead

so from next year Who is back in the spring/summer slot, and Merlin series 3 in the autumn slot
.... with the usual crap in between

Re: BBC Terminates Robin Hood

Good riddance to bad rubbish imo. The story of Robin Hood is not a PC one and yet the BBC ran week in week out with all this wishy washy PC claptrap. Unveiling week after week of totally unrealistic plotlines of stuff that could never ever happen. The only good thing about it was the fact it was in HD and I truly wanted it to be a hit, even the lush HD couldn't stop me from turning off and I've sat through some right crap just cos it was in HD.

For those of you still watching it, look on the bright side you now have another 45mins to either eat dinner or watch some DVD/Blu-Ray/HD-DVD

I'd say nothing. Several genre shows were made because of the success of Dr Who. Robin Hood and Merlin wre two of them. As much as I disliked Hood I'd rather see this than some rubbish game show. Even Graham Norton can't make the latest BBC1 effort work.

All the best
