Just as important, how about newer encoders or an increase in bandwith. We can only hope.....

The top gear trip in the cars special to the north pole gets repeated in HD on BBC HD now and again.
And looks really good.

HOLE IN THE WALL - whoopy do!!! that's what I spent 2k on my HD system for!

Re: BBC set to increased HD content

About time!!! BBC HD rarely gets a look in when I'm watching the box ( although with Wimbledon starting, this will change).

However, the programmes which are 'coming over' hardly inspire enthusiasm.

Top 3 BBC HD wants:

1. Match of the Day
2. Top Gear
3. Erm..............Country File

Compared to Sky 1HD and even CH4HD, the BEEB should really take a long hard look at themselves.

Re: BBC set to increased HD content

But I want some Barrowman HD action, and another dozen Graham Norton vehicles.

Why show Ashes to Ashes in HD months after the SD airing?

Why not show Top Gear, one of the BBC's top rated shows that has been filmed in HD for about 2/3 series?

Why show repeats of a programme on BBC HD instead of the new series airing on BBCx at that exact time.

Somehow us people at the forefront of technology get 3year old repeats of the pap nobody actually watches. I said about 2years ago 'I bet Dragons Den will be in HD before Top Gear". And on was right

Is there a date for the HD run? Still haven't started to watch the SD version yet and would happily wait a month or so and get HD.

Don't hold your breath waiting for MOTD, I was reading somewhere that this won't happen for a year or so, until they move to a new studio or something, they haven't got HD facilities where they are now.

It is the remit of the BBC HD service to only broadcast a selection of BBC shows in actual HD, not a mixture of HD and upscaled SD like C4 and Sky1 do. They have no mandate to use licence payers cash to upscale everything else and do a tandem service like those channels.

BBC - About the BBC - Statements of Programme Policy 2009/2010 HD

Pity though. Top Gear and the F1 coverage would be sweet even just upscaled

Granted, and quite correct imho. However, they do seem to go out of their way to shaft the HD viewer. A prime example being Ashes to Ashes, one of the BBC's prime offerings, recorded in HD but not even a whiff of an HD showing until weeks after the end of the season on SD. Surely that would have been a prime candidate for an HD/SD simulcast? As opposed to the 8-millionth rerun of Robin Hood or whatever.

I mean, they're repeating Krod Mandoon endlessly at the moment and that's a steaming pile

Ashes to Ashes wasn't filmed with HD cameras. It was made with 16mm film, with which the BBC have an internal policy of not transferring to HD for broadcast.

So it seems the BBC are dropping their guidelines for HD quality (), to boost HD content.

They are probably referring to nect year's 3rd series, when saying it will be making the jump to HD.

Re: BBC set to increased HD content

There are a few things that the BBC have in HD but only broadcast in SD. There are two that come straight to mind BBC Question Time and the follow up show Big questions on Sunday morning both are produced by Mentorn media for the BBC both shows are filmed in HD by Arqiva but the BBC only broadcast them in SD at present, saying that Sky film and produce their greyhound coverage in HD yet only broadcast it in SD

What's your source on that? I'm fairly sure that it is not filmed in HD.

Do you mean those programmes are filmed with HD cameras?

Emmerdale has also been filmed with HD cameras for over a year now. But the post production facilities are still only SD enabled. It won't be able to be broadcast in HD until 2011.

Re: BBC set to increased HD content

As far as the list of programs mentioned there's not much to get excited about; I was under the impression that this was the last series of "Ashes to Ashes" although the ending did leave it open for another.

Most of the new drama offerings shown on BBC HD - "No:1 Detective Agency, Personal Affairs, Hope Springs and Casualty 1909" for example plus many more - only have stereo sound so can anybody explain why the HD trailers shown between the programs and "Wimbledon" have "Dolby 5.1"?

I can understand "Wimbledon" with HD picture quality but what's the point of "Dolby 5.1"?....Grunting in surround sound .

If they want to add to the content then why not broadcast "The Wire"? It's on FXHD and looks great.

The 5.1 is excellent on Wimbledon, it really brings it alive.

The Wire was not made in HD and the BBC don't do upscaling on their HD channel.

Re: BBC set to increased HD content

Question time is filmed using Arqiva's ob7 HD ob unit the cameras are used in HD mode as is teh console and vision mixer in the ob unit, they also use a HD uplink unit yet choose to downscale it before playout later in the evening.

The Big questions on Sun AM is broadcast live again using the same principle except it Live and not recorded and then played out

No doubt it does enhance "Wimbledon" but what I was getting at was why not use 5.1 on new drama. If they shoot in HD then why not the best sound option.

Well "The Wire" looked pretty much like HD to me when I took a look the other night......upscaled or not.

I see the BBC are showing 10 games live from the Championship next season. Anyone know if they are going to be in HD ?

Re: BBC set to increased HD content

They have announced the live games but there has never been any mention of HD coverage so I suspect it will be like the last time BBC had FA cup all games were filmed using HD ob units but only broadcast in SD due to cost issues.
