2's Big Read - music for Catcher in Rye ?

Did anyone watch The Big Read on BBC2 on Saturday night ? (I just happened to stumble across it, and it proved to be surprisingly watchable).

Ruby Wax presented a slot on Catcher in the Rye, and I wanted to know what the background music was ... sounded familiar ... definitely heard it before ... mebbe on a movie soundtrack ... ?

Can anyone put me out of my mysery pls ??

Don't know about the music. But i love the book. Mark chapman had it in his hand when he shot lennon. Holden kept calling everyone phoneys. Which is how chapman saw lennon. I read the book about chapman being a brainwashed killer for the CIA. It claimed that the book could have been the trigger.

I missed wax. was it good?

Hi keanyboy - nope, I've not read the book, but yes - my guess is that Wax's presentation of it will have done it full justice. Very atmospheric, grainy hand-cam, young actor was very good, Wax referencing her own life ... and of course the great music !

And rather strangely, I can answer my own question now, after posting it on the BBC BigRead forum, and getting several replies ! (Very busy board, but difficult navigation !) And I knew it was familiar - the haunting soundtrack to the superb film Requiem For A Dream, which I watched about 6 months ago.

Thanks to Kirsty Robertson (and others) for this reply -
Summer Overture and Lux Aeterna spring to mind. I think Lux Aeterna is the remix of Summer Overture from the Requiem for a dream soundtrack. It wasn't on the Lord of the Rings soundtrack but it was reorchestrated and used in the theatrical trailer for The Two Towers

Clint Mansell from PWEI did this with Kronos quartet, and a damn good job he did too. I think he also did soundtrack for Pi. The man's a Genius

He chose the tracks but not all of them are by him. Film and score mate perfectly IMO.

Oh come on, I'm reliving my youthful awe of Clint Mansell, please let me believe he did EVERYTHING
And who wants a PWEI reunion? All the other Black Country lot have done it.

OST contains (among others) tracks by Massive Attack, Aphex Twin and Roni Size. RFAD is done entirely by Mansell and the Kronos Quartet.
Shouldn't alter his deification though

Cool

I believe that the BBC have got into trouble because they dramatised part of the story which no one is allowed.

It's my fav book. Sallinger became a recluse not long after he wrote it.

"Anyway, I keep picturing all these little kids playing some game in this big field of rye and all. Thousands of little kids, and nobody's around - nobody big, I mean - except me. And I'm standing on the edge of some crazy cliff. What I have to do, I have to catch everybody if they start to go over the cliff - I mean if they're running and they don't look where they're going I have to come out from somewhere and catch them. That's all I'd do all day. I'd just be the catcher in the rye and all. I know it's crazy, but that's the only thing I'd really like to be. I know it's crazy."
