Post Do-it-yourself 3D movies at home

New 3D technology may mean films might no longer be the sole province of movie studios with big budgets.

Anaglyph...red...blue...yuck!!

As usual, the BEEB are way behind the times with regards technology...Lol!!
Forget red...blue...anaglyph 3D...it's awful and old hat. Also, the Disney 3D attractions work well exactly because they DON'T use red/blue glasses. I think they use real 3D polarised glasses so the report has mixed it's technologies up.
With regards home 3D, field sequential shutter glass movies have been floating around the net for a while now and it has been possible, using freeware technology to make your own 3D field sequential versions of DVD releases. I have made a couple myself using my pre-owned 3D DVDs. You have to have both 2D and 3D versions of the film and using free software like DVD2Stereoavi and 3D stereomoviemaker you can make your own 3D field sequential movies. For those who don't know, field sequential 3D movies are far superior to anaglyph versions. They retain the full colour and full 3D effect of the movie and don't give you eyestrain and headaches. The only real drawback is that the image is darkened slightly (compensated by adjusting the brightness and/or using the page/flip method) and sometimes flickering is evident if viewing at low 60Hz refresh rates. Watching on a CRT monitor or 3D ready display though, allows higher refresh rates and no flickering.
To make your own 3D field sequential version, basically you take the 2D version side and then edit the 3D anaglyph version side (re-edit and re-colour it etc) put the two back together as an "interlaced" movie using the software "et voila"...you have a 3D field sequential back up copy of the movie to watch at home.....

P.S. It's a bit more complicated than that and takes a LONG time to do, but there is a lot of information out there about the method etc for those interested.

If the major studios continue to insist on releasing future 3D DVD movies using the 3D anaglyph method (e.g. Journey to the Centre of the Earth) I just hope that they at least include both 2D and 3D versions. That way, at least, those of us who have 3D shutter Glasses have the option of creating our own "MUCH BETTER - NON- HEADACHE-BLOODSHOT-EYES-INDUCING" versions to watch in the privacy of our own homes.

great reply,

sky are to release a 3d movie time, aparently using the proper polarised glasses ?

red blue glasses are completely useless and fool the brain giving you headaches and probably give some people fits even !

your right about bbc being behind, sky have the money to do it properly and are in touch with modern technologies.
