I recently bought The Snowman/Father Christmas (Raymond Briggs special double edition) in Tesco for a few pounds and can confirm it is in original 4:3 format. For reference this is the version:

I also have "The Snowman special edition" which is cropped to 16:9 and the poorer for it.
Frankly, with DVD you can watch any film whenever you want.
The point of a Christmas movie for me is to entertain the whole family. If it can hold a child's attention and put a smile on your face at the end it has done it's job.
If it can keep the grandparents from falling asleep after Christmas dinner it is truly exceptional.
The article's "worst list" is a much better choice for Christmas movies in my opinion, with the previously mentioned films and of course the great Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.
At the top of my "to watch" list this year is the new Wallace & Grommit short on BBC1.
And to Quote Raymond Briggs' Father Christmas, "Happy bloomin' Christmas to you an' all".
Cheers
